I love watching your channel, a guy sets himself up in the Cannary Islands with all that tech stuff is a feat unto itself. I get lost a little sometimes but mainly due to my stupidity but I still watch hoping to pick something up I can understand with my limited capabilities. But I like the way you work, nothing seems too complicated and nothing seems out of bounds to you, GPU's Power Supplies, 💻 laptops. I sort of imagine the lovely sandy beaches lovely blue sky, quite a difference from the old country.

Nice detailed video. I wonder if the solder bridge that you cleaned off the board near the hdmi connector need to be in place to pass the signal to the pch? I didn’t see how you could have created the solder bridge by accident when soldering the pins. Thanks.

It's nice to hear somebody actually explain HDMI and now it works. There's a lot of toutubers that think they know it all, but all they really know is some basic testing and then swap out components without actually knowing how the circuit works

cheers sir aweszome vid very informative thanks ... my guess is you mess up few jumpers at the area of hdmi port while cleaning and so on saw that hapened few times... self done that sometimes ... prefer to look at early stage of vid and confirm that solder jumpers are still same configuration. tough mosfet teory is posible too, good luck with that bugger 👍

I'm a bit late to this one, but it's not something silly like, you have to select HDMI by fn F4 or Windows key+p. I have had this at work with projectors etc. Also @8:21 you can see what connectors were bridged etc
All you need to clean metallic parts is vinegar. Soak parts overnight keeping sure that the level of the vinegar stays above the parts. Then the next morning rinse and scrub clean with water and apply some deoxit or other contact cleaner with lubricant. Hope this helps for future projects. Love your videos and I've learned quite a lot from you my friend. Great work and great job! 🎉
OK, so, I sub for the awesome content, and the learming of course. What I did NOT expect was a cooking class lol. I have me a botle the Canadian version of that HP sauce, only to be used on steak and steak and swiss samiches. Never have I EVER heard of using it on HP and BACON samiches, LET ALONE on fish and chips. Guess I am gonna have to try that! Tks for the tips.

Hi Richard great video when you tes emi filters. Did you test them also diagnogal because they mus be beep diagnogal if that happens you will not get hdmi working and you need needle probes for this. I suggest you order one because your probes are to big for this kind of work. I hope you will be able to fix this I am eager to see. It will be strange it will be pch to blame this problem. I have never seen it well when usb not working it is to blame to pch but hdmi I never seen yet.
I know this is a bit old now, maybe check the filters near the port
Hello Richard, I think i have here a identical mainboard but with a I5 processor on ( LA-B181P Rev 1.0 ).
The mainboard doesnt work for the moment because the bios chip is removed and the traces are damaged around the bios. Bios flash was interupted while flashing.
But if you want that i mesure something or take a picture from something where you are not certain of i will do if you want.

When I'm doing testing like this, and I don't want to waste fuses, I use a little bit of solder instead, because it can't carry much current if it's small enough. Or you can use a single tiny strand of wire wrapped around the outside of the blown fuse.
did you check if the inductors bridged between differential pairs? also in diode mode id check the 4 differential lanes read the same, red probe on ground
Good attempt, awaiting the next episode. Daft question, HDMI doesn't need to be enabled in the BIOS setup? It's the vinegar and salt in sauce which breaks down copper oxide, but generally only on copper-based coins (1p, 2p etc) when immersed for a considerable time. Daddies is, of course, far superior to HP. I wonder whether white vinegar would clean the inner pins, though I have never tried this.
I would not be surprised at all to find this is some sort of phantom firmware/software problem, though I did my best to eliminate that possibility.

For cleaning things like this with hard to reach areas, my first thought is ultrasonic cleaner.
Could you try to put a 3V on the output of the mosfet to give the PCH a hot plug signal?
Yes - I think forcing PCH hot plug detect from low to high manually (with the HDMI cable attached) would be a very good idea - It would be good to find the PCH datasheet to use the correct logic level voltage - the I could check for an EDID read request on HDMI pins 15/16
That sauce bottle originated in Greece, or at least from a Greek importer as most labels are in Greek language. Great video btw
in Canada people use hp sauce for steak.
Yeah, also in the UK we use it with meat pies and sometimes with (battered) fish and chips as well
Good stuff... A few things I noticed along the way that may help... The HDMI connector very obviously went in properly as the spring detents engaged in the holes in the connector - obvious on the video. The diode array/zener devices are for ESD protection. HP sauce is nowhere near as acidic as it used to be, mostly due to reducing sugar content so acidity has to be reduced to match, fecking with the flavour, you could try Coke as it's really phosphoric acid you want for that sort of cleaning. No clue as to the actual fault, I would have lifted the mosfets and checked the supply voltage without them present as they could be pulling the rail down due to an internal short.
Yeah the HP sauce didn't work well that is for sure.
I'm thinking actually, to remove or disconnect the Hot Plug detect MOSFET, connect the HDMI cable then force the PCH hot plug detect pin to go low to high (I'll see if I can find a datasheet for the correct logic voltage) then look on the scope to see if it sends the EDID read request to the monitor
@@LearnElectronicsRepair Yeah, effectively breaking the circuit to see which side of it is bad seems like the way forward.
The inductors are common mode filters. They reject common mode static voltages to protect your hdmi encoder chip.
Common mode voltages are voltages induced on both of the data lines at the same time (usually via static discharge or lightning). The voltages induce currents, which are cancelled out because both inductors are magnetically coupled.
There should be 4 pieces of common mode choke close to HDMI port. But it seems that 2 of those are replaced by a common inductors? Can you verify it?

Regarding the test of the connection HDMI, you can simply connect all the wires short in on one side and check only on the other side between each wire and the other wire and if there is a connection, it means that the wire is intact and well connected It will be faster
You will find that the eprom with the display data is powered by the 5v on pin 18. If no data is returned from the eprom windows will not feed a signal to the display. I've had HDMI displays with blank eproms and a raspberry pi will feed a signal but a windows laptop will not. To the laptop needs the data.
All that dirt (outside connectors), corrosion (fan) and oxidisation (on aluminium frame) reminds me why I always get "Marine Grade" electronics ( I live in a vehicle, often parked by the sea).
Someone else mentioned it, try Coke (Coca Cola) - but its a chemical reaction, so you need to know the metal or plating (Gold, Copper, Silver, Nickel, plated ..), to know the correct "sauce" to apply (HP, Brown Vinigar, White Vinigar, Coke, house hold or metal polish, etc)
CEC is used with any IR controller, through an "LIRC" USB receiver, on an RaspberryPi, thats how the 1st metal case got its name "LIRC", because it was bundeled with an "LIRC USB Reciever" - XBMC (Kodi) has built in support for LIRC modules + CEC.
Did anyone else realise that +5v @50ma, SDA, SCL, GND is a reperposed USB (I2C) interface, USB 1.1 & USB 2.0 are +5v @500ma (max).

You showed that there are 2 switches on or off in the chip which you did not find. so 3 volt are in 2 ways? , maybe you only connected 1. hope you Succeed
Vinegar is the cleaning mechanism in the sauce. Save yourself the trouble of cleaning out the gunk and just use vinegar
It's unlikely this is a software problem, but just to be sure I would check with an ubuntu/linux bootable USB stick.
You can force HDMI output on an external monitor by not plugging the internal lcd cable. this technique works on all laptops and MacBooks i know.

They way you test HDMI port is the same way you test video card data lines.
In diode mode all data pins except for ground should have nearly identical voltage drop.
One that don't match means a) poor connection to the image producing chip, b) bad image producing chip
C) chip that controls image producing chip etc. Who knows. Could be power issue etc. Figure it out.

The HDMI port on your HP computer must be activated within the operating system (Windows 7) to properly send audio and video to external devices.

You need to make yourself a LINUX USB LIVE stick if you are going to test computers. Ubuntu will run perfectly on a LIVE USB stick. No need to install Windoze on a spare hard drive.

And lots of voltage measurements and stuff... 😉 I couldn't get any further without working out what is going on with the +3VS voltage rail and the mosfets - and something is wrong there so I had to order parts. There will be a part 3 of course, like all repair work it takes a bit of patience...

Very true Rem U - and by messing around and applying logical thinking to what we find is the way we learn 😁 There are a few good suggestions on here regarding faking a Hot Plug signal to the PCH and see how it responds, I believe this is the best thing about this channel, between many heads we can solve some really challenging problems, or at least learn something new in the process.
