Soy sauce tip of the day:
Look for the one with the most protein in it. Often what's called soy sauce ist just 50% soy sauce and 50% salted water.
Trust me, you'll be blown away by how little good soy sauce you need for fried rice and stuff like that. Way less salty, way more umami.

I like to think I have experience in cooking on a budget; but my comfort zone is very domestic North Indian food, and now that I'll be away from India for two years for grad school, I'm a little intimidated by having to figure how to cook without breaking the bank in a situation where ingredients that I'm used to are either unavailable or expensive. Your channel's helped me a lot with that one anxiety (only about twenty million others to go!), so thanks a bunch for doing what you do. I already have grocery lists planned around your recipe videos that I have flagged and saved.

Chickpea curry with homemade pita/flatbread (flour, salt, yeast, about 60% hydration) and some greek yogurt to add on top. Insanely good and cheap, I like to skip rice entirely because I'm addicted to scooping curry up with bread. Curry can be as simple as come canned tomatoes, ginger, carlic and onion. Ofc you also need spices.
Hummus and this curry are my staples because I just like chickpeas.

Right now a dozen eggs at my store costs $3 (US) ... and that's factory farm eggs, not organic or anything. That would make 2 eggs $0.50 alone. A 12-16 oz can of veggies of any kind would be $0.75 at least. A 5lb bag of plain white flour (store brand) is $2.12. A 2lb bag of brown rice is $1.37. A 3lb package of oats is about $4. Et cetera. Short of going to a food pantry or dumpster diving, I'm not eating all of the recipes in this video for $1 a day.

Google: What is the secret to great fried rice?
Use cold, leftover cooked rice. Left in the fridge overnight, the rice grains will firm up, making it easier to separate and decreasing the chances of your fried rice turning out mushy. If you can't wait, air freshly cooked rice to remove moisture and refrigerate the rice for a few hours before cooking'

Tortillas are made from corn or wheat. Wheat tortillas come from Northern Mexico and are just as "traditional" as corn. I prefer corn and corn tend to be made in a healthier way, but neither is bad or non traditional.
Also, roti tends to be made from Whole grain flour and is usually a bit denser. Tortillas are thinner, usually from white flour and tend to have some fat added.

Hey! I have a suggestion for something you could make! It's called Hoover Stew, and the traditional recipe is just:
    1 box of pasta (~2)
1 lb of hot dogs (~$4)
    1 can of corn (~$1)
1 can of diced tomatoes (~$1)
This makes like 6-8 servings, which comes to like $1-$1.33/serving, and it's extremely filling and easy.
The kind I make is a little more expensive because I'm gluten free and don't really like hot dogs or putting corn in pasta, plus I add onion, but it's still a really cheap struggle meal.

@@vlc-cosplayer You say that, but two eggs are already 0.4EUR minimum. Cheap legumes are around 0.3EUR per kg. Tofu would be around 10EUR per kg, soy is a bit cheaper, but not much. If I really try to cut costs for a meal without losing all nutrition I can maybe get the meal down to 2-3 EUR, which still leaves me at around 8-10 EUR for the day. I can’t skip meals in between as a diabetic so those have to be accounted for, but don’t necessarily have to be more expensive than 1.5EUR.
Perhaps the prices could be brought down a bit by going to a mass grocer or huge supermarket, but at that point I’m spending more than an hour extra just shopping and planning and I’m better of just working for that hour.
Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not complaining (too much). Wages here are relatively high to offset the living costs. Just think it’s worth shedding a light on how titles like the video are in fact unachievable for many watching simply due to food costs.

yeah thats true that healthy food dont have to be expansive unlees you want bulk, cuz that three dishes had maybe around 1800-2000 kcal which is not too much. i pay only for breakfast around 2 dollars so that is 60 dollars monthly and im living in poland so this is one tenth of my monthly earnings.

When you made the tortilla wraps and you covered the dough you said you did this to make them rise but they didnt? That is not what is meant to hapoen as you are covering them to rest not rise as resting the dough helps the gluten relax after kneading which makes it easier to roll and softer when made👍🏼

Sir...sir... you are aware that a cup in an American recipe is a standardized unit, not just any cup or scoop... right? We have specific measuring cups for cooking
