    late to the show here- but I'll post anyways.. I used to run a real wdw rig with my band until it got to be a drag carting the thing around so I switched to the Helix. The issue was that I couldn't seem to get the same vibe with the Helix as I had on a real wdw rig with the Lex processors and so forth... This patch is very close so far that I've heard and tested ... can't wait to try it out with the real PA and the FR set up at the rehearsal sport. This is a very interesting patch and as stated i think the key is using 2-3 unique points/ amps as sources to add texture and variety to the separate tones as opposed to just splitting the signal from one amp and the setting a wet signal off of that. Great work YahtZEE - thanks for sharing.. saved me time

    I watched that TPS show and went straight to Helix to do the same thing. I agree that having three point sources just sounds better. I use my Lone Star Special as the dry in the middle, and it keeps the separation and clarity (and also offloads some DSP by not needing the third amp). I've been trying to do it all in Helix, but I can't really get the same sound. Very cool to be able to experiment like this!

    I have tried it too and I feel the dry with distortion doesnt sound as good. I think it is a fuller sound when you are doing clean numbers etc. I have gone back to my stereo set up where I also have the dry signal mixed and coming through and can toggle that with expression pedals to make it wetter or drier. I also feel the distortion cuts through better and doesnt get lost in the mix and with dry if you turn it up it loses the stereo effect. So for me I like stereo two amps rather than the 3 wet, dry, wet. Maybe in a bigger hall or something it might be better! I have Dawner Prince Boonar and choice of Timeline, flashback and belle epoch. Amps were Vox Mv50, Laney IRT studio, Boss Katana, I ditched the HotRod George Benson as it is too mush! You sound good and in certain parts better than TPS. I think when you go do this Digital is actually better and more controllable.

    Sounds great! Thanks for sharing. It all makes perfect sense. The only thing I did not quite get was to put the reverb in front of the delays on the wet path. Granted you said there wasn’t much of it but it normally it sounds better to me with reverb after delay. Was it a DSP limitation? It must have been close to be maxed out with three amps and all that is going on there. Anyways - great video!

The octave fuzz is really the only one I like in the Helix, but it's definitely over the top without some eq to cut some highs like I did here. This is such a nice patch, and it is a cool approach to patch building that I have never tried on the Helix. Thanks for sharing! One question: Why are the reverb and delays in front of the amps? It sounds great, but it's not what I'm used to when building patches... Thank for any insight.

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      steelstringer thanks! Delays infront of the amps makes it sound more real and natural as you get the interaction between amp compression and gain with the delay repeats. After the amps sounds more like it's added in post, cleaner sounding but less natural sounding. I do both, depends on the situation. In this case they ran them infront of the amps and it sounded much more realistic that way with the Helix :)

    • @steelstringer
      @steelstringer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeatzee Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. Would you use a patch like this in a live situation, or is it more suited for a recording opportunity?

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      steelstringer depends on the band and music played but I'd say in general it's more suited for recording or just playing along at home. The latter part of the video with the slapback delay could work great live though! It's the long delays with lots of repeats that can get more problematic

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, but not sure how that'll sound. Stereo is what gives everything space and makes it sound much bigger. In mono it might be more like a jumbled mess, though I can't say I've tried it in mono.

  • @erikhartley2494
    @erikhartley2494 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you always use such extreme hi cuts on the stock cabs? Also, when making mono patches for a church mono sound system, does it matter if you select mono or stereo delays? Reverbs? Obviously one XLR left will sum to mono but to avoid weird sounds I try to make purely mono patches.

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Erik Hartley hi Erik, the stock cab high cut has a different curve than the eq block high cut so it requires a more extreme kHz cut to get the same results. Generally I do no cuts in the cab block though and always use an eq at the end of chain. For this patch however that wasnt really possible since there wasn't much room/DSP :)
      For mono stuff, stereo delays will only make a difference in mono if you have A) the scale parameter set to anything but 100 or B) the delay is a dual or ping-pong type delay. There's nothing wrong with swapping stereo fx for mono ones if you run mono to save some DSP though, the patch converted to mono just won't sound nearly as nice obviously vs a stereo patch being played in stereo .

    • @erikhartley2494
      @erikhartley2494 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeatzee thanks! What's your typical EQ treatment at the end of chains for stock cabs?

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Erik Hartley I generally use a parametric eq last or second to last in the chain set with an 80hz low cut and 11 kHz high cut. If there low end is flubbing a bit to much putting an eq infront of the amp with a low cut around 80hz will help fix that

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Kelly hey Matt no its not, I figured it'd be easier to have one patch to download. If you don't want to use IR's just pause the video where I got over each stock cab and replace the IR's with those. Use those stock cab settings as a starting point and try a couple different mic combinations to get whatever you're looking for :)

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      wolvesandguitars that's a known Helix bug that should be fixed in the next update due to be released any day now. Try re-downloading and loading it and see if it happens again. If it does what's always fixed it for me is turning the block that turned itself off (last in chain usually) back on and re-saving on the unit itself. If it still does it just do it again and after 2 or 3 times it should stay put. Terribly annoying bug that seems to happen to random patches.

      Jbls are high quality, you won't be missing anything but volume in the room and the feeling from having more of an amp in the room sound (thought not exactly the same). The jbls won't move air, and are very focused / directional, but will sound great in my experience!

    "Inspirational tone" I've undervalued this idea. Even if what the congregation ultimately hears is mono --- even if the electric guitar is buried in the mix live --- it's still important that you love what you're hearing in rehearsal. Now, somebody said that if all you're doing in your "wet dry wet" attempt is allowing some direct/dry tone through, you can skip the parallel path and just fiddle with the reverb mix and accomplish the same thing. ??

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! As for the last bit, It's not the same thing for a number of reasons. The different dry tone due to the dedicated dry amp, the ability to run different wet effects through different wet amps at the same time, and in the Helix the volume changes when you raise the mix of an HX reverb you have a lot less control and less clarity as you raise the mix. All worth experimenting with :)

  • @BrazenNL
    @BrazenNL 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why don't you have the mix to 100% on the wet channels?

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I remember correctly it was really hard to balance everything together at 100% wet. The added bonus is that you can just run a 3 amp setup without the wet effects and instead just layer them on. The effect levels are still obviously very high without being full 100%, but you can certainly download the patch and experiment further!

      @BrazenNL 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YeatzeeGuitar Ah, I wasn't clear I think. I mean, in the delays itself on the wet channels, why isn't their mix set to 100% so they only produce wet sound. You have dry sound on the wet channel. I used to run wet/dry (with wet 100% wet) and just got a Helix. So I'm paying full attention trying to leech knowledge.

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrazenNL no we're on the same page :) the different delays at 100% mix sound different, the overall level of the left and right I had trouble balancing together by going 100% wet. By doing it this way I had more "headroom" to fine tune the wet amp sound as a whole. I also like the sound the extra 2 amps added to the overall "dry" sound. Wet dry or in this case wet dry wet rig doesn't require effects to be full 100% mix wet, you just need one not receiving wet effects while the others are :)
