I worked at the Iron Ore Company of Canada in the late '80s after Mulroney was gone. The resounding feeling from the company staff and the community was downright hatred for Mulroney to the point where when Mulroney was campaigning, a delegation met his plane on the tarmac and told him not to get off of the plane.
I'm sure his family will miss him and he had supporters, but his political record and ethics were not to be commended.

I am a conservative but was no fan, he will be remembered for implementing the GST. And yes, a crook. But now he is dead and they want to make him a saint.

    • @GordMerrick
      @GordMerrick 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The GST was an offset. Here's what happened. Canada's exports were not competitive and employment was suffering. Canada had a 21% corporate tax on exports that Mulroney targeted a the culprit. Mulroney had a majority in parliament and leveraged that and cancelled the 21% corporate export tax and brought in the 5 % GST as a revenue neutral offset. Corporate Canada responded and exports now much more competitive boomed as did employment
Opposition Leader Jean Chretien Liberal leader tried to make hay at Mulroney's expense and promised to cancel the 5% GST if elected. He subsequently defeated Mulroney at the next election but soon went on to say he could not keep his promise to cancel that GST The bottom line is the revenue offset set up by Mulroney was working well as intended and the export economy and employment was booming also as intended.

LOL reading the comments I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers what Mulroney actually did while in office. It pisses me off to no ends to see everyone come out and say nice things about him now that he's up and died. I say good riddens and it's too back the crook didn't kick the bucket back in the early 1980's before he brought in the GST.

I certainly do not agree with all of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's politics. It's difficult, if not impossible, to agree with anyone's politics. But I believe that Mr. Mulroney did the best that he could and firmly believed in his political convictions. Was he a crook? He probably was. He's a politician; so what do you expect.
None the less I believe that Brian Mulroney was and is a decent respectable human being and a darn good husband and father. I can never say such things about Justin Trudeau.
I agree with Jean Chretien; Mulroney & Chretien are political opponents, but not enemies.
As for Justin Trudeau; I personally will always be Justin's life long enemy.
My heart felt condolences to the Mulroney family.
And thank you CBC for this program with Bill McCarthy.

Back around the time of the Meech Lake accord era, I wrote to Prime Minister Mulroney. I had ideas and such but I was a bit salty towards him and his government at the time. Not rude but some of my thoughts we're again a bit salty.
Well I wrote him in like November of '89 if I remember well. I got a reply on official Prime Ministerial letterhead which was professional and polite. I know he probably did not write it. Maybe he read the reply, who knows.
But I also got sent to me an official Prime Ministerial Christmas Card, gold embossed with the Mulroney family portrait in the card. I still have it with the letter today and value it.
My respect for Prime Minister Mullroney was better by such even if I still had some political issues with him back then. Yes, I was more politically left back then. Thankfully over the years, life experiences and understanding took me away from some of my goofy lefty views.🤔
RIP, Prime Minister Mulroney and my condolences to the Mulroney family .🙏✝️🙏

And also, another not to mention, only 17% of federal government revenue comes from tax payers. That amount was about 12% when Mulroney was PM. Tax dollars are not going to as many things as certain clowns think. Majority of revenue spent by Federal Government comes from trade agreements, exports, tourism, etc.

TRUE although I did not agree with all of his policies. I do believe that he loved the country and did his best to serve it well. I sure miss the more upbeat atmosphere in those days, thanks to his good old Irish charm; his warm and upbeat personality. He was a relatable man in so many ways and we missed him for that. He may have been the last PM who made us "all" proud to be Canadian. (even when we disagreed!) RIP PM Mulroney. Condolences to Mrs M & the family.

As a 33 years photographer myself here in montreal I full time job as a mechanical designering for a pulp and paper company Valmet Dominion in Lachine, Montreal of 2,000 workers we fabritated paper machines and one must be in Newfounland. So in 1988-9 prime minister Mulroney came down to Lachine Montreal to have a day visit so my boss ask me to be the photograher of the day. I don’t know if photographer Bill McCathy would remember the visit if he was there. Day shift was 700 hounded workers.. after the visit he told the company to find better way to produce paper because our industry creates pollution in the rivers. No help from the government the company closed and 2,000 workers some were in their mid 50s and couldn’t find work in the experience they had.. I was there for 7 years ❤️‍🩹😢
