At the apartment complex I used to live at has a sea of National elevators. They all had booming motors, and a simple floor indicator above the door rather than the display. One of which would always jolt when going up from 1 to 2, or down from 2. However it didn't jolt when going up from P. (Parking) or going down from 1. Not sure why, it didn't seem to be low on oil as it always had a smooth stop.
Motor rooms are usually on the 1st floor or down in a basement. In my doctor office the motor room is below the 1st floor. But most elevator motor rooms will be on the 1st floor and should be marked elevator machine room or machine room.
