Only time I've heard an HST sound like an old EMU from about the same time. As said below, number four traction motor or transmission gears fault nothing to be too excited about. New wheelset, and new motor, and off you go again. Refurb the old ones, if poss, and off they go again too. These are old ladies now, but still offer an excellent travelling enviroment for the punters, and good reliability. Like any older vehicle they need more TLC than the privatising pirates like to give.

Great vid mate! The problem causing the smoke is: A brake that is stuck. The Brakedisc overheats and starts smoking like this.

43169 with a MB190 engine had a serious fire in the rectifier. Damage was quite severe and it had to go back to Derby for repair.

I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more..

Did you ever drive one that had the Mirrlees MB190 engine. They had even more power. 🙂

With these trains being so old they are bound to have the odd problem. This looked like oil over heating rather than fire.

Excellent footage, looks like distributor on the power car was stuck, thus causing the brakes to rub, isolate distributor on that bogie make sure the brake blocks aren't rubbing, do a brake test and away you go.

I was the driver of this train, and actually it wasn't a fire, it was actually me inadvertently wanking onto the hotplate in the buffet car whilst thinking of a Deltic. It briefly formed the consistency of an omelette but then started smoking heavily. Cheers

    They're not safer though really.
Thwe technology is pretty much the same thing.... a diesel engine providing electrical power to traction motors.
However, with a Voyager, if the motors or engine catches fire, there are people sat above it.
On a HST, there's no-one sat in the powercar but the driver.

Traction Motor's commutator flashes across to earth basicly, normaly caused by dirt and carbon brush dust inside the motor. The commutator being made of copper basicly melts / burns when it happens and everything basicly desinigrates into a big mess!

@hstscotsman Nothing to do with a hot box. If it was, it would have to be removed from the train on a wheel skate at 5mph. Thats a typical TM flashover. You can hear it popping and banging as it went past.

Strange how the bogies make an electric train (dc traction motor noise) from 1.20 onwards .......I noticed this once before watching an IC125 depart Bodmin Parkway for Penzance with the rear power car working and assumed it was the power car traction motors making the noise. Probably not judging by this video?

@@scaneron8457 Sorry for late response, I wasn't informed.
The rear power car was on. I've since realised that the wheelsets make this noise, an example being `XPT leaves Penrith for Dubbo', one of my favorite videos.

Class 43s are the slam door 🚪 trains 🚆 are with First Great Western, renamed Great Western Railway 🚃 in September 2015. Great Western Railway are likely to withdraw the class 43s for provincial services by around perhaps 🤔 Saturday 9th December 2022 after they were on the local services since perhaps the year 2017. By early 2024 class 43s could be with 2 rail operators are CrossCountry and ScotRail. Formerly allocated to East Midlands Railway, Grand Central and Great North Eastern Railway 🚃. Stopped being used for intercity services used for Great Western Railway in early 2019. 😃
