@@edwardmortimer2150 hp isn't mph... hp stands for horsepower, a measure of power (kinda acceleration). it's how quickly it accelerates, not the actual speed.
Hello, does anyone happen to have the timings for this service? I used to have most of them from scouring across the web but have lost many. Many thanks.
So in normal operation it has distributed power (power car at each end of the train), but since the locomotives failed and it had to be rescued, it had power only at the front of the train. Does that reduce efficiency?
It had 2 PCs at one end, then one idling for aux power at the other, so i doubt it would reduce efficiency that much, however it would probably decrease acceleration.
Most steam and single diesel engine hauled trains had to be piloted over Dainton Bank. IIRC only Kings and Westerns were allowed unassisted. A single HST power car is somewhat lacking BHP wise compared to a Western, plus it has to try and provide power sapping ETH too.
THere are two possible reasons for this combination. Firstly, the train power cars may have had a traction problem and as no locomotive may have been present a pair of HST power cars were used or, (more likely) it was a positioning move to get a pair of power cars to Old Oak Common TMD without requiring an additional train path. Additional train paths cost money!
The emergency towing equipment was always designed for this outcome, but I don't think BR ever did this on the road, sending the nearest suitable locomotive.
Why was it called triple headed there was only two power cars at the front and one on the back so really it was only a double headed power car and one power car trailing
Now if all those power cars were operational and the driver departed the station at notch 5 then that train would of departed in some style! Lol. I know as I've created a consist like that in train simulator 2017, you have a ton of extra horse power with 2 additional power cars.
Wow all fired up thats 9000 hp on tap... Alas that was not the case... However... I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more..
Can only assume it was on a loco movement, refurbished or serviced or something, but used the passenger movement to get it to London where coaches where waiting possibly!!
Great capture, that's certainly something you don't see everyday!! Good video footage but did you ever find why they were set up like this? Surely must have been a reason for this set up. Nearest to this I've seen is 2 HST power cars coming into Plymouth with just 1 coach in between them. Found out it was due to a 'Naming Ceremony' that was taking place the leading power car (43149) was to be named 'University Of Plymouth' so they carried out the naming ceremony at Plymouth Station
Took me a while to figure out how you could triple head these, but if you look closely there is only a bumper between the two, so the two power cars that are there are just dead weight really
The other two power cars were obviously there to rescue the train. One rescue power car to couple to the train using the fixed bar emergency coupling nose to nose and the second power car to allow the train to be driven at normal speed.
Na only triple headed, headed means the leading end, so say double headed DBS class 66s it means two coupled up 66s on the front pulling the train, if there's two of em and ones in the front n one on the back, it's single headed with an aid pushing!!
Not sure about this specific case, but in Germany we sometimes see two locomotives when there is construction on the route. Faster acceleration means they can reduce the delays. Other more frequent case are defects.
This was obviousy a rescue of a failure first are too mean to pay for a loco to tow so used two power cars back to back they also rescued penzance sleeper this way.
Amazing! someone actually took the pains to compare - A two stroke diesel Electric Multiple Unit built between 1975 to 1982, to An Electric Multiple Unit built (or in service) from 1996 - on the basis of speed!!!
@@menonsans The Paxman Valenta is a four stroke engine. The problem we have here is that we still hold the record for the fastest diesel powered passenger train in the world. This was quite an accolade in 1976. Now, however, it means simply that almost every other country has electrified most of their passenger networks decades ago and we're decades behind.
.... why 3 engines??? It’s a waste. They can use those engines on other coaches which will supply more trains which is SMARTER. They really need to think before they do something stupid like this.
First of all "absolutely stupid comment" seriously, are you trying to be a hater??? now just imagine this being all valenta engine the noise would be amazing
steamingheaven h youd be deaf but happy
yeah, but only the first two are running, the ones connected to the coaches are broken down
Oh my god. That would be amázing.
Agreed.
Imagine the power of that combined monster. 😱
Thats so sick i never saw a triple hst
Imagine how quick it would have been if all 4 were working! 9000hp for 8 coaches!
@@edwardmortimer2150 He's talking about power (acceleration), not speed I guess.

Hello, does anyone happen to have the timings for this service? I used to have most of them from scouring across the web but have lost many. Many thanks.
Fabulous video, we're the HSTs being draged in passenger service or travelling to the blow torch clouds?
what a bizarre sight! great spot and great filming.
2 power cars close coupled......awesome!!! Shame not Valenta powered we all miss their music!!
So in normal operation it has distributed power (power car at each end of the train), but since the locomotives failed and it had to be rescued, it had power only at the front of the train. Does that reduce efficiency?

Never seen that before, not a triple headed HST
its known as the hydra consist XD
Most steam and single diesel engine hauled trains had to be piloted over Dainton Bank. IIRC only Kings and Westerns were allowed unassisted. A single HST power car is somewhat lacking BHP wise compared to a Western, plus it has to try and provide power sapping ETH too.
the infamous hydra consist HST when one head breaks down the two pick up the slack.

Probably the first one Mick.
I saw this at Reading too, but only as it was leaving.
Great catch, I'd love to have seen this myself but work commitments tend to get in the way lol :)
did you see the smile on that driver's face.))
Nope
just enjoy your video, as i like HST, INTER CITY, interesting set up, reminder when HST RAN OUT DIESEL FROM DERBY TO BIRMINGHAM
Great catch, wish this would have gone through Keynsham, may have gone to see it, if so!
they had a double headed hst on the penzance sleeper once because the 57 broke down
Now it's certain that the 43087 and 43144 are heros
The emergency towing equipment was always designed for this outcome, but I don't think BR ever did this on the road, sending the nearest suitable locomotive.
The is amazing! The only thing that would be better would be if they are Valenta's!
This*
Love hst's as I do the've had there soul ripped from them.
This is maybe just a way of returning power cars to their Home Depots without additional costs.
Ahhhhhhh, right
Did not know that.
Thank you
this was the old Reading station no?
Sounds like the original two's engines are still running, presumably to provide ETH - I guess the front pair are just replacing failed traction?
Now that's, a monster
Plenty of power on that service!
Why was it called triple headed there was only two power cars at the front and one on the back so really it was only a double headed power car and one power car trailing
well I know one thing if somebody wanted to model this in OO scale they could :-)
that’s actually cool
Now that is very,very,very rare!
Wouldn't it be quadrouple heading as there is one at the back?
Now if all those power cars were operational and the driver departed the station at notch 5 then that train would of departed in some style! Lol. I know as I've created a consist like that in train simulator 2017, you have a ton of extra horse power with 2 additional power cars.

I would have got on that just to see what the exceleration was like. 9'000 horsepower for what, about 300 tons of coaches! Rather lively i'd imagine.
2 of them dead
Why was this exactly how it is?
I wonder how often that happens?
Can only assume it was on a loco movement, refurbished or serviced or something, but used the passenger movement to get it to London where coaches where waiting possibly!!
Set broke down, the two back to back ones are being used as a rescue loco, bit like what Virgin used 57/3s for
Wow that is unusual! Well filmed too.
Presumed it was something like that.
However, why the twin, double headed "unit"
I travelled through on a "First Great Western" on Saturday 6th April 2013.
Watching now

when hsts have broken down and need to undergo major work they need to be tested so that's probably whats happening here
Took me a while to figure out how you could triple head these, but if you look closely there is only a bumper between the two, so the two power cars that are there are just dead weight really
Only the two in front had power?
saw that just outside Paddington on the way home to taunton
That`s a bit of overkill
Its not.
Shaun Tilley it would help a lot tbf, HSTs aren't the fastest accelerating things when they have 7-9 coaches behind them lol
The other two power cars were obviously there to rescue the train. One rescue power car to couple to the train using the fixed bar emergency coupling nose to nose and the second power car to allow the train to be driven at normal speed.
Very cool
thank you for telling me
How on earth have you got over 1 thousand views?! WNXX i suspect, great video
Probably me watching this time and time again
Anybody knows why this is?
Unusual
Nice unusual catch mate :)
No valenta action though.
Fantastic! Very odd service that. Also subbed.
I hope that this important line could be electrified in short times, diesel traction is not very efficient at high speed
how on earth do HST's couple up together
They have a coupler added under a cover at the front
did u know it was going to be that?
Good stuff.
coupling bar behind the flap
Good clip, most rare!
How did they join the face -to-face power cars?!
emergency coupler under a cover at the front
bet there was some frothing over this! Lovely video though.
Wow mega RARE ;)
why does the train have 4 power cars for just 8 cars 1 locomotive can handle the train just a bit overpower there
Raymond Chico actually 1 locomotive won't be enough for it to get to 125mph, it needs two
train must have blown the moter
Wow very rare
nice!
At the other end of the scale: th-cam.com/video/jSVgwHE1aMM/w-d-xo.html (the DXR is roughly the same as a Class 66).
HST Cerberus
Why?
Video description says that power failed: it was a rescue mission.
Na only triple headed, headed means the leading end, so say double headed DBS class 66s it means two coupled up 66s on the front pulling the train, if there's two of em and ones in the front n one on the back, it's single headed with an aid pushing!!
got this at Newbury :P
Rescued HST?
That's what the description says, yes.
0:53 sounds like a class 56
Why do they need a triple header anyway?
Not sure about this specific case, but in Germany we sometimes see two locomotives when there is construction on the route. Faster acceleration means they can reduce the delays. Other more frequent case are defects.
Its actually because both the HST Powercars had failed so the front 2 were brought in to assist them.
This was obviousy a rescue of a failure first are too mean to pay for a loco to tow so used two power cars back to back they also rescued penzance sleeper this way.
Why wouldn't they just uncouple the failed engines?
They've got to be recovered somehow or other. Can't just leave em in situ.
43087 43144 43124 and 43163 i think
YESH
cool
OMG!
actually 4
never seen tht before
If you count the rear unit its actually a quadrouple header even more rare
Rare
British engineering, eh? Meanwhile, the Thalys trains run reliably at 300kph across Europe. Tired, sad old UK.
