You need a table Bud that way you're not not always bending over. Then you can mount a vice to it and then you can really work without worrying about your fingers

You can't weld on springs, in best case they'll just bend but they'll probably snap after some riding. You should've cut the spring plate loose and moved it up a bit on the strut. If you got tubing in matching sizes you could also cut the strut and extend it.
He is not welding on the spring , I don't think. Just the outer part of the spacer getting welded together. If you heat springs they loose their temper and will break from the flexing.
@@TimZ007 If they lose the hardening they will just bend and stay there and not flex like a spring and that won't make them crack.
The welding has what we call a "HAZ"(heat affected zone) and this will be affected by rapid cooling from the surrounding material which will be just like quenching so you'll get if not the whole weld a zone in the HAZ that forms martensite due to the carbon content in the spring steel. Google Schaeffler Delong diagram to see how the carbon equivalent affects the weld and which filler to use to compensate.
Not only does the martensite itself become brittle due to lack of proper tempering but you'll also get grain growth in the HAZ which also makes it more brittle. And it only takes a thin strip of this hard brittle zone to make it crack and fail.
Typically I never like videos but I’ve liked every van video in hopes to keep it alive, all of this reminds me of helping my buddy work on his “tofu drift van” so I have a real appreciation for these vans

First large bump ( if it even steers and doesn't require a 1/2 mile to turn around in) will probably rip the rusty suspension pivot points right out. Its a cool idea in concept. I understand it was a donor given to him, but perhaps a cleaner car and not something that looked like it was dragged out of the great lakes.... It ain't hate, its car guys that have probably been there knowing when a project is just to 'gone'. We'll watch on however he wants to go cause he's cool.

I was thinking "that does not look safe" right before the grinder took off lmao. You should really wear safety goggles too not only for physical protection but IR too (check at a welding shop I imagine they have something). You would not think, but grinding produces lot of IR light and it's bad for the eyes. I never knew this myself until I watched AvE's welding videos about the automatic welding masks.
Honestly i cant find a better youtuber that explains car stuff other then you. Your da best. I got a stock 2005 hyundai accent GT. A weird little ugly car. Wanted to lift it and swaps its in line 6 with an LD for power reasons. XD little did know it could barely fit a 1JZ.
Build a welding table with a vice on it working on the ground is what you do when you don’t spend money renting a shop. And you will see a huge improvement in your welding skills when it’s done as a bonus

I still don't understand why people hate on this build, it's interesting and fun to watch, I absolutely love it. Sure people can complain all day about the fact that he "could be working on the rallyata." but think about it, if you keep hating the build and not watching the video he might not do the AWD swap miata in time anyway because he won't have MONEY. Guys please, have an open mind and support him.

Losing a finger tip costs around $17k where I live (ask me how I know) if you don't have insurance. Even if you do have insurance your coming out of pocket for the deductible.
So, losing a finger tip sucks, and you will spend money you could use on your projects instead.
Don't rush and do stupid stuff. You can lose a finger tip (or worse)!

Hope you aren't planning on driving this on the road. You took the temper out of the springs while adding severe stress points. Hopefully you don't kill someone when the springs fail.

Bad Dog Custom Metal I was thinking the same thing. Easiest way to do what he wants is make a spacer at the top of the shock, and extend the mounting bolts. Then it would be solid, not a flexi danger zone

Ok I HAVE A SICK IDEA!!! where the LED headlight units are, spray the inside area where they sit BLACK! it will definitely make the face more aggressive and less “Panda” lol. And if you’re happy with that maybe continue the idea and add accents of black in some places but the LEDs sitting in a black headlight unit will look dope. Keep up the good work bro. I don't understand all the hate this build is getting. This is by far the coolest build you've done in my opinion. Yeah its a rust bucket, but once you finally get it driving, it will all work out. find me one other person on TH-cam who is building a lifted rwd minivan.

Honestly I came here originally for the bus build and conceptually I like this build, but I don't know if it's the aesthetics, or what, but I think I just became polarized and disinterested when I saw it got keyed up, the engine didn't seem to get any attention, and you go stuffing tires that are just flat out too big. If you cleaned it up, put some killer steel bumpers on after getting the motor and brakes sorted, I'd be more interested because it feel like your interest lay in getting it right . The rally miata tells me you can do it, but now after hearing your plans with that I'm kinda 50-50 on whether in going to jump on that video series. Are you going to bother trying the gambler 500 at this point?

Ive been watching since the forza days. Legit love watching this because its different and not every youtuber is doing it! Its pretty neat. I was so excited for the turbo 2 rx7 but i knwp thats costly and probably not worth it for you. Excited for the subaru drivetrain miata tho😉

I have an idea. Get calipers from junk yard out of another car and put them on. Also grab the pads and rotors. Calipers on rockauto cost $40 each. So spending 60 on junkyard parts so the thing drives doesn't seem that bad

U should use this as an offroader and make the lifted miata a rally car, i know that u hate this car and i know that it is a pain in the ass but just think about how fun it will be after ur done. If u decide to continue use parts from junk yards from different vehicles that way u dont have to search for oem parts

After reading alot of comments i conclude that you need a vise... and you should sell it... personally i like the apocalypse theme but its not worth getting frustrated at. If you can build the battle van im all for it. If you sell it then thats fine too

I understand how some people like the van but I feel like it would be cooler to see the rally miata awd swap rather then money being wasted on something you’re not going to keep, not to mention the state of the van.. I see these things all the time and serviced a few down here in Australia and they basically have nothing more then surface rust

Hey love the video! Here is a tip to make your lights stay up: Put sand bags or something like that on the cross bars that go to the legs of the stand. That is what many studios do to prevent them from falling and breaking.
If you like your eyes, I would recommend wearing safety glasses every time you touch an angle grinder. Safety glasses are 10 x more important than ear protection when it comes to using an angle grinder. Just a suggestion, being in construction. I personally know 3 people who have lost eyes using angle grinders.

PLEASE make a sturdy bench and fit a strong vise to it. When you are welding, its a good idea to have a bucket of water handy, have a rag in the water incase of fire.
