That's the exact trip I want to do on my Ténéré 700 from Vic. My mate races there sometimes on an RZ 250 and i'd love to ride to the lake when speed week is on. I was there 20 years ago in a car, summer 2002 but camped on the west coast of the lake instead. Absolutely stunning country.
Great video. Just found your channel. Always liked the dr650 and nearly bought one but my Scrambler won out. Would love to take a trip to aus and do some adv riding some day. Dr650 would be on my list for that. 👍
It’s incredible how much more fuel efficient EFI is. I get 550 km out of my 30L tank that fuels the 1301cc engine in my KTM 1290. So an engine literally double the size of the DR650 gets virtually the same fuel efficiency courtesy of fuel injection. It’s an observation, not a criticism, as I also have a DRZ400 (bored and stroked to 470) with a 28L Safari tank and FCR39 pumper carburettor. I’m always amazed by the KTM’s legs. Great video.
Yeah definitely some advantages to the big CC bikes. I regularly ride with a KTM950SE and watching him take off and overtake is a buzz but he can drain a 30l tank in 150klm and shred a rear tyre in under 1000klm. As much fun as that would be, it's the exact reason I didn't buy one 👍
@@ADVRiderAustralia ride from Adelaide too Flinders rangers on my 2012 dr 650. Round about 400-450 KMs with 30 L safari tank and got bout 550 KMs on it before a refill. She still gets her distance from it. love the dr
Hello ... Amazing ride. Im from Brazil and i have a Dr650se 1998. I would like to know which headlights you used on your bike I thought it was really cool. Thanks
@@adrianostarling2653 it turns night time into day. Incredible lighting. I have travelled hundreds of klm at night in remote areas. Low is amazing then you turn onto high and you have so much confidence. Highly recommended 👍👍
@@ADVRiderAustralia Thank you very much for the tip, but looking at the values in Canadian dollars, for us here in Brazil it is 4 times more expensive. Our currency plummeted in this current ridiculous and fascist Brazilian government. Unfortunately I will have to find a more affordable option. Thanks a lot and good tours.
for travel it is a very good choice. unity with nature, peace of mind and organic, deep thought. Nice vid, mate. That sort of mud riding is constant squeaky bum time for me lol. Tell me, what is the faring/headlight setup you have there? I've seen a few DRs similar to that..... Looks good.
Thanks Stu. Great vid. Talk to me about the steering dampener on the DR650. Really necessary, or just an improvement? And how do you think that might be different for a DRZ400? Cheers!
Yeah definitely worth it! Riding long dirt roads you get a bit distracted, start looking around, then you hit a rut or bump and with the dampner it washes off all that jitter. I wind it up on deeper sand when going fast. It just holds the front end straight. It's like cheating. 👍
At first it was terrible due to the discomfort of the factory seat. As soon as I upgraded to the Procycle seat, life was good. Its a stable bike on the highways but its more geared for lower speed work. Top speed is about 140kph wringing its neck but 110kph cruising is no issue.
To be honest the top speed with the gearing I have is around 140kph. I rarely do much over 110 kph and these motors like to rev. They are clunky down real low in the RPM which is great in some circumstances but not all. I still get 5.4 litres per 100klm or about 600klm from the 33 litres the tank holds. Some people run higher gearing but the 15/44 is a great balance of pickup, top end and fuel economy. 👍
Why does everyone wanna take the chance of sucking water and mud into their engine in the middle of nowhere? Water gets sucked into the cylinders and the next thing you know you've got a bent connecting rod with no cell service.
@@BillySBC I bought a used DR650 and it's been flawless, not only that but I have hydro locked a TE610e so I know all about bent rods. The water crossing mid way through the vid was easy. It looks a lot worse than it actually was. Had the water been flowing into the airbox side I woldve been a bit worried but that wasn't so.
@@ADVRiderAustralia Alright we'll let you go this time, but next time contact the DR650 Abuse Committee for watercrossing approval before attempting this okay? Okay.

A bit wetter than when I went. Awesome trip that up to Lake Gairdner and back through the Gawler Ranges. 👍
Yeah that first attempt was through 100mm of rain. It didn't stop all day. Hammered!
Insane vid mate....wanna get out there real soon
Stu hows it going? you got your equipment working now awaiting a video m8
Where is the sound track by Prodigy??
Their record label flagged me for copyright then wouldn't let me use it after protest and made me remove it 😭
