    Rick is chewing on this groove like cheap steak, and he turns it into fillet mignon, slowly and deliberately. What a tasteful player. Did you guys notice the humble first bar, to orient the band? Solid, and this is what happens when a player sets aside ego - but delivers the goods (in this case, old beef jerky deep in the pocket turned into tender and juicy). :)

      @Brad Sure. He's just a monster that can do anything like Vinnie Collaiuta or Simon Phillips. I was thinking along the lines of a tight drummer that does funk. Clyde Stubblefield. Dennis Chambers could be in here. Omar Hakim too.

    • @151mm
      @151mm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I noticed it too. I kept hearing some kind of wailing and looked at all the other players to find that Rick was playing with his mouth open the whole time. It was likely him and then the end came. You can see him vocalize as he hits at or near the ending. Haha!

  • @Joesfosterdogs
    @Joesfosterdogs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Marotta is a great player...but this was a joke. He didn't come close to the Gadd groove here. Do your homework before trying to play this song...make me appreciate SG all the more coming up with groove in '75

    • @matthewcannon9699
      @matthewcannon9699 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly true from where I'm listening, and that's not all .. why are the keys so sleepy and sloppy here? It doesn't work. Dear old Richard Tee .. what a fantastic player .. greatly missed.

    • @pbaker7160
      @pbaker7160 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think this version is better than the studio version with Gadd. Much more groove and played with a more funky style. The studio version is also played at a faster tempo...it makes the song sound rushed and too stiff. Rick Marotta improved the song.

    • @andyokus5735
      @andyokus5735 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pbaker7160 Steve Gadd is Steve Gadd. I much prefer to play with a drummer who's in the heat of battle. Gadd is really a jazz drummer.
