  • Mayuri Kurotsuchi is a sadistic mad scientist, who is obsessed with collecting specimens and conducting twisted experiments. We learn so much about his character through his various battles in the series, with Uryu, Szayelaporro and Pernida, along with his relationship that he has with his lieutenant Nemu. In this video I will breakdown Mayuri’s character and reveal to you the various different fascinating aspects to his character, including his backstory, his relationships and his philosophy of imperfection which he adopts as a scientist.

    One thing I forgot to mention in the video is how he chooses to keep the 8th Nemu's surname as Hachigo(8th), unlike before when he changed the 7th Nemu's surname from Nanago (7th) to Kurotsuchi, presumably out of pride. Proving that by the end of the series his actions are now in line with his beliefs about perfection, how it doesn't exist. Something as subtle as not changing a surname reveals that Mayuri is not being boastful or feeling pride for his creation. He has learnt his lesson and is more open to the idea of Nemu evolving and not restricting her like before. His contradictory belief about her being his perfect creation has been rectified, consequently eliminating a source of despair for himself.

    He certainly represents the darkest aspects of Soul Society all on his own. When push comes to shove his obsession with research and willingness to do the worst is what gains him the upper hand in a fight. Sure most of the captains have crossed many lines over the centuries, but Mayuri has leaped over them with glee. Definitely someone to stay away from, far away.

      The ironic thing is he created nemu to be his version of perfection
      When he told those lines to the ancarrcer
      He is now contrasting his own creation of nemu as he assume that she is perfect and never saw any flaws in her
      I find it interesting when he was reminded of the the things he said to others and not think about some his actions he taken towards his own daughter that created
      By saying perfection is a despair for yourself when you can't improve yourself in your own morals and things you have done in past life
      Is making me cringe at the idea that miyuri should have just thought more about that

    • @johnlucas2838
      @johnlucas2838 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@gwarguraqueentrickstarcoat9110 One's thoughtlessness is always fleeting. All one can do is correct their course after introspection even after stating his view on perfection. Mayuri may have been suffering from despair as he always felt he was below Urahara and had locked himself in that view of perfection contradicting himself. You could almost say it was a loud boast of his until he perceived Nemu developing above what he viewed as Urahara's genius. Now he's being consistent. Some will say change is hypocrisy but change is important for development and growth. One's views will change over time whether they like it or not.

      @npc8253 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The speech is really good and is absolutely true. Perfection is boring. Just like having cheat codes in a videogame or paying for someone to finish a project for you. Perfection by its very nature is unreachable and as beings who's very existence is entirely predicated on the iterative honing process that evolution and reproduction truly is then it is only natural nigh hardwired into the mind of every man woman and child to strive to become better. Those who don't become depressed and often kill them selves(after all life is motion and so perfecting the self is a constant motion in one direction). To stop growing to stop being better than you were yesterday is nothing more than death to iterative being like us! Thus perfection will always be a goal nigh unreachable. Not just because perfection is an abstract concept or even that perfection is subjective. Rather because to reach it is to proclaim your very existence need no longer itterate both biologically through reproduction) and psychologically. At such a point why continue living? One does not stay forever in a game they beat right?
      I do however think your wrong about a scientists mind. As a chemist i assure you there are tons of ego centric scientists who not only belive them selves to be perfect but also fail to understand that the journey to perfection is the beautiful part. The destination( Perfection) is in this way merely incidental. However i completely agree about the human mind part.

    "The perfect being, huh? There is no such thing as perfect in this world. That may sound cliché, but it’s the truth. The average person admires perfection and seeks to obtain it. But, what’s the point of achieving perfection? There is none. Nothing. Not a single thing. I loathe perfection! If something is perfect, then there is nothing left. There is no room for imagination. No place left for a person to gain additional knowledge or abilities. Do you know what that means? For scientists such as ourselves, perfection only brings despair. It is our job to create things more wonderful than anything before them, but never to obtain perfection. A scientist must be a person who finds ecstasy while suffering from that antimony. In short, the moment that foolishness left your mouth and reached my ears, you had already lost. Of course, that’s assuming you are a scientist."

    One thing I really like about the speech that the imaginary Szayelaporro gives him, is that he, despite claiming that he despised perfection, considered Nemu to be perfect. He is fully aware that from an objective point of view, that Nemu is not perfect, and the fact that she died is proof of this. Yet, when she dies, showing how much she has truly grown and become her own person, Mayuri clearly felt pride, despite claiming to feel ashamed. I think that this can be interpreted as how Mayuri, despite of everything, at the end of the day, is a father. And as a parent, he couldn't help but see his child, the thing he felt the most pride in, as 'Perfect', even if he knew that that was not objectively true, just like any parent would see their child. So, when he is raising the new Nemu, he has finally become a better parent, since a part of him has finally realized how much Nemu really meant to him.
    Mayuri is definitely one of the most well written characters in Bleach, and probably my favorite character in the series. His speech about Perfection is one of my favorite bits of dialoge ever, and his fight against Pernida is my favorite fight in the series.

    It is still hard to sit through that battle with Uryu though as it does a great job making you absolutely despise him upon first meeting him.

    Mayuri is an interesting, but inarguably one of the most vile and evil characters in the whole series. I think it's interesting to examine him from the perspective of how messed up the Soul Society really is. He does become less menacing as the series goes on, but the whole making-parents-BURN-THEIR-CHILDREN bit is like.. just think about him doing that. No matter what he does, that'll always keep him in the evil-camp for me.

    Hearing the commentary toward the end about Captain Kurotsuchi's "Trolling" of his opponents made me think immediately of Spider-Man; Spidey is always slinging insults along with webbing, throwing his opponents off their guard and angering them as a distraction tactic, which is most likely why they both apply the mental attacks.
    Perhaps surprisingly, I always had an interest-perhaps a liking-toward him. I suppose I'm drawn to characters with a degree of madness in them. It doesn't hurt that he's the Mad Scientist archetype within the series; that's been a favorite of mine for a long time. The sciences are beautiful to me, and I see in them endless potential. I should also point out something of an analogue he has to Solf J. Kimblee, from Fullmetal Alchemist, whose title as a State Alchemist was "The Crimson (Lotus) Alchemist", referring to his affinity for creating deadly explosions, namely ones he used living people as the origins of. Both are mildly insane (partly sociopathic) and prefer to isolate themselves from others, fittingly. Yet, both do something of a turn toward being more sympathetic, if not outright "Good Guys", depending on the audience's perspective.
    Strangely, I'm fairly sure I developed a similar perspective to Captain Kurotsuchi's on perfection independently, before hearing it from him. "Always reach for perfection, and you'll have infinite room for improvement." Keep rising, never stop ascending until you reach true perfection. I realize that this may be a somber subject, but I've also said that, "When you reach the highest point you can in life, it ends-because you have no way to become even better." Do your best. Never let go. And no matter what, try to learn more. Understanding everything you can is a part of maturing and evolving.

    An interesting thing is one of the differences between Kurosuchi and Mr. HatandClogs. When something catches them off guard Hat and clogs reacts with suprise then goes to "let's try this then" while Kurosuchi seems annoyed then pulls something out that he prepared just in case. Potentially they were both prepared for such events but didn't think they'd need to worry about using these precautions
