Gary Collins may have been one of the best hosts that the Miss America Pageants have ever had, but, in my opinion, no one did it better than Bert Parks!
The problem is, especially all the blondes group together, they literally looked like late middle aged women. It was the "Golden Girls" era and looking back they look like bunch of blonde grandmas. My hunch is that at the time, this was standard hair and dress for any young girl.
Miss Mississippi that year, Kathy Manning, is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She was one of those women who literally took my breath away, and is also smart, and truly kind. A friend of mine who used to work for the MAO, said that the story was that Kathy was just too pretty to win that year, as the Organization was very nervous about extremely beautiful women winning after the Vanessa W scandal. Now, is there any truth to that nearly 30 years later? Who knows...
SUPPOSEDLY, Bob Guccione said he had pictures of one of the Miss America candidates, and would publish them if she won. Miss Utah must have seemed like the least likely one to have pictures of that kind, not only because she's a Mormon from Utah, but her father was a General Authority of the church. Could all just be something someone made up, but it was a long time ago!
Couldn't agree more Richard, she was just STUNNING! TALENT was great, swimsuit was the best and gown to. I was so sad when I heard of her passing in late 2021, just heartbreaking. RIP Kathy, you will always be beautiful.
Yes, she the did. Just heart broken over this sad news. She will always be our Miss America here in the great state of Mississippi. RIP Kathy, you will be missed by many!
The yr before, someone to the side of Debra Maffet is holding pins in her hand aimed right for Debra to grab & pin in Vanessa's crown but never pinned the crown on; then at the '93 pageant, Leanza Cornett (miss amer '93) never pinned in Kim Aiken's(miss am '94) crown, & that nearly fell off once she started her walk. In that video you can clearly see the crown had slid down almost to the ear on Kim's left side, staying that way until almost the far end of the runway, when Kim levels it off.
Suzette Charles played right into the way MAO officials were mistreating Vanessa and turned a lot of people off. That's why black publications don't even bring her name up--ever! I remember the interview she did with Jane Pauley and Jane threw her a roll of film and the end of the interview and suzette caught it and laughed. That was a stab at Vanessa and the negatives that were never burnt.
She was also the most controversial, having pled no contest to a shoplifting charge. After Vanessa, they could never have had her as Miss America. She's lucky she made it as far as she did.
Because she'd broken the rules and should have never been in the pageant in the first place. Yes, the replacement lost part of her year with the crown but the real victim is the girl from Vanessa's state who SHOULD HAVE been given a chance to take the crown. Ms. Williams should have to pay restitution to the white girl she illegally knocked out of the competition.

All of those blondes grouped together looked late 40s to early 60s in age. The entire final top ten looked very, very aged. This is not their fault as those were the looks young women wore at the time, but looking back NOW it's shockingly cringe. IF there had been high def back then, we might be able to see how young their faces were.
I agree but once it was uncovered during pageant week that she had been arrested for shoplifting years before there was no way the pageant would crown her and first runner up was the best she could have hoped for. The pageant went for the squeaky clean virgin from Utah. *puke*
You get the award for least knowledgeable; since the mid 40's, this has been a scholarship pageant. Thereafter, &age's of swimsuit & gown toward overall total points were reduced dramatically, & %age of talent & interview/prelim scores carried over were increased to emphasize the point that beauty alone will NOT win this pageant. Ask many insiders, experts, & previous winners, & most will tell u the prelim interview, basically a job interview, is often a huge factor in winning & top 5 places.
I viewed this because of Lauren Green, who embarrassed herself interviewing a religious scholar who wrote a book about Jesus. Rather than reading the book, or even skimming it, she read nasty stuff assorted wingnuts wrote about it, and asked for his comments on the nasty stuff. Aside from that, I'd never go near nonsense like a pageant.
one reason you perhaps aren't realizing is that unlike the Miss USA pageant which IS a beauty pageant and every part of the final score has to do with how beautiful the women are; of course there us also a preliminary interview, but that is a very small percentage towards the composite score. In the pageant above, which gives scholarships with the money won being restricted to the approval of the MAO; in other words only for school and not a cash and carry thing. Plus Vanessa and Suzette were only scored in beauty only categories twice; once in swimsuit and once in evening gown. Then they are scored HEAVILY in talent- i believe, but not completely certain, that back then the final nights worth of the total score includes 50% of it being talent, relegating beauty to being of much less importance. Next you need to understand that the preliminaries are extremely essential in winning the pageant. First, they do an interview with the judges answering questions, to get an idea of how well the winner would do in public with the press- VERY much like a job interview. And to this day, among the finalists the public never knows of the ten who scored highest in the prelim interview. Next thing you need to highly consider in regards to your critique is that Vanessa, not Suzette, but Vanessa won BOTH prelim swimsuit (the beauty category) and talent, whereas Suzette only won a prelim talent. Each actual winner of those prelim competitions, compared to those who didn't win, scores an incredibly larger score, and is very heavily weighed in the final score. If you think Suzette SHOULD have won because oh how beautiful she is I think you should really try to contact her and ask her why she never won the Miss New Jersey USA title (I doubt she even entered any of the local pageants in that system in new jersey). You see, even back in the 80's when height, long legs, well developed breasts and such were just as imperative to successfully competing in a beauty pageant as they are now. (Suzette is so noticeably smaller than any other miss usa winner I know of, and only ONCE in the Miss America system did a woman around Suzette's height win (Kylene Barker in 79 was barely over 5 ft). As a musical theater major from Temple, I am certain that her entering the MAO pageant and getting the all the scholarship money was the right thing for her: what better way to enter into the competitive field of trying out to work in the field of entertainment that graduating debt free; as in "the starving artist syndrome." Vanessa IS an incredible class act in my opinion, b/c she admitted her mistake (it wasn't even a criminal act, duh), found a way to enter into her field by making albums first, and fought her way back the American way- with a dream, to redeem her self worth and prove she has good, ethical well standing in public. On the other hand, Suzette's tasteless and uncalled for comments about Vanessa shortly after giving the title over to Miss Am 1985 were so controversial and without merit, that it is a known fact with that interview she lost that chance to be the oldest daughter on the Cosby show. Has Vanessa ever said publicly with those kind of sour grapes ANYTHING about Suzette? I respect your right to your opinion, and hope this helps to explain your confusion over why SUzette didnt win b/c of how beautiful she is: because this isn't a beauty pageant. Its a scholarship competition.
@@patrickkeenan2515 The scholarship WAS a cash and carry thing this particular year if you already had your degree. One contestant got a car with her money; another, a nose job. Unclear if the photos were legal in all states (the lesbian-suggesting photos), but Vanessa did sign a contract prior to competing for Miss A that she had never committed an act of moral turpitude which was an obvious lie, greatly impacting this 1985 pageant and the experience had and choices made. In coming back, Vanessa didn't make albums first, she modeled for a struggling wedding magazine who chose her as a model for the attention it would give them. This may be a "scholarship" pageant, but voting is still subjective and political. Vanessa was chosen to win early in her week. MAP realized they needed to choose a Black; she was light-skinned with green eyes. They watched her closely all that week, determining she needed better table manners they'd have to work on. There was such outcry about Vanessa not being a typical Black-looking girl that Marjorie Judith Vincent was chosen in 1991, in part, to rectify this complaint.

The contestants all looked gorgeous with beautiful makeup and big sprayed hair . Love the eighties decade..
I detested that sprayed hair look back then. Touching a woman's hair did not feel nice and was best avoided. Also all the spray smelled . . . unsexy.
I liked Sharlene Wells. I think she looked so much older when she won than when she came back. She still looks great today.
The problem is, especially all the blondes group together, they literally looked like late middle aged women. It was the "Golden Girls" era and looking back they look like bunch of blonde grandmas. My hunch is that at the time, this was standard hair and dress for any young girl.

Vanessa Williams
what happened that time to vanessa williams? she should be the one to turn over the crown to miss utah.
