  • This topic is considered taboo to many however it really boils down to what is biblical, practical & required of those who serve/give of their time. Hear from leaders who have decades worth of experience!

God has blessed me with contentment in the earnings I make from my day job.
So I consider the gifting and joy He's given me to play drums with our worship team and helping usher our church family to worship Jesus musically, and helping prepare our hearts for the Sunday teaching to be "storing up for myself treasure in heaven".... and I can't imagine any better compensation than that. 🙌

That’s wonderful and respect fully your approach! It’s an honor to serve whether with compensation or not.
Would you receive compensation if you didn’t have a full time or “day job”?

Just now seeing this; one whole year later! As a fellow drummer with a degree in Music who plays at church, I must say that I totally agree with you. I don't think most people realize how much time and money goes into being a reliable musician. I wish more people would be willing to talk about this, but I won't hold my breath LoL. Great sub-genre topics as well 💯💯💯

That's nice, but let look at this more biblicaly, first there is a difference between a musician and a servant, a musician has limitations, while a servant doesn't, the bible says what ever your hands find to do, do it in the name of the lord that includes playing music, a servant pays tithes and offerings to their church while a musician only looks to be paid, a servant is saved born again, while with a musician salvation is optional a servant comes to bless the lord while a musician comes looking for the lord to bless him with money God could have the rocks praise him if he wants to read amos 5:23this scripture is for people who thinks they are doing God a favor because they play music in the church since God has no respect of persons that should mean everybody in church should get paid not just a musician. 😮the whole congregation, finally, why does God have to pay anybody to worship him? He are ready paid every body at calvary.

Should every Sunday School teacher in the church get paid? How about the greeters, bus drivers, coffee makers, nursery workers, soundboard, Livestream, etc.? While a mega-church might have resources to hire professional (paid) musicians, the bulk of churches do not. I’m 74 years old. I’ve been playing drums for 60 years. I played yesterday at church, as I’ve done many times over the years. I have never and I will never charge a church for my gift of time and talent… although I did enjoy a cup of coffee and a bagel between services yesterday. :)

I appreciate you Jim for your service and hard work! It is biblical for our talents to be compensated. It is also a personal preference, one might consider it their tithe, to give of their time as service too. I personally believe that even those that volunteer to serve should be compensated for their time and efforts. Now compensation doesn’t have to be a $ amount. It could be the coffee/bagel/donuts (or a meal). As for compensation it could be a gas card or some kind of gift. It all depends on the role, time & sacrifice people are putting in and showing the appreciation for their service to the ministry. The reason why I support being compensated for someone’s time is a simple breakdown of the time spent. Example, a friend of mine would have a midweek rehearsal (with drive & time of rehearsal) it was around 4 hours. Not counting personal practice, but if we add that it is now 6 hours. Sunday was a 10 hour day (sound check, multiple services & drive) that’s almost 16 hours a week to volunteer & serve. That’s taxing for someone that has a family but also wants to serve. Again I respect and admire everyone that serves whether volunteer or paid because it’s not just a job it’s a act of worship. Appreciate you Jim!

Glad to see ya playing drums and for the Lord. I stumbled up your stuff randomly and I was like yo! I know him. Jammed with you a few times way back in the day. I’ve been playing guitar for churches for decades and never thought much about the topic.
Side note, You are killing it! Great playing and content.

If you’re a pro player and you make a living from playing music and it’s really a tight high end experience with the music I think you should get paid if you don’t need the money then don’t get paid

I appreciate this input. It really depends on the needs of the person giving their time
