These situations suck. 3 years is a very long time. She said the other is harmless, when the other was at their house, and the main guy was busy working the week prior, the other and the wife were deep in the relationship. That's all her fault. Even if the husband did say about appreciating, it might have been far too late. She might have done this regardless.
Communication is a big issue and maybe that is why she sought another's company when she should've tried to talk, but it is still possible even in a perfect relationship that she just wanted to do it with the other.
Secondly, I'm glad the poster is still alive.
Thirdly, even though the wife cheated, the husband will be left with the bills. Make it clear that the wife cheated, adultery in the minds of others may not be accounted for in divorce, but will make it more relatable and reasonable.
Hoping that this is just a failed marriage and she wants to end things amicably. Also, as much as it may hurt, tell the children, or they may believe something else.
