I had a private server that I hosted from around 2007-2011 that had a constant 60+ people on at a time that were regulars, and it was based off the old 2006 era, albeit modified to suit the gameplay that we wanted. Although I kept in contact with 3 or 4 of those guys in the years, I've recently lost contact with them and will probably never be able to contact them again. There were real life deaths to be mourned at the Varrock altar, Birthdays to be had at the Blue Moon Inn, ect. All good, and bad times. Brings back a lot of memories.

Loved this version of Varrock. The simple textures and gray stone just felt more appropriate for a fantasy city, and the giant central fountain was iconic. It felt a little dirtier and darker, which I always thought was much more fitting for the city. Decades later and I still feel weird walking through Varrock. Damn man this is lost media.

Edit: It seems like a few people are watching this video for some reason lately so in case you're interested, I'll share my earliest memory of this game: My earliest memory of RuneScape was the very first time I started playing, My friends that introduced me to the game walked me from Lumbridge to Varrock after I'd completed tutorial island. I remember thinking that I'd never seen any other game like it and was amazed that players were killing cows & chickens, side by side with each other. As I first entered Varrock (4:34) suddenly there were hundreds of people running around, It felt like I'd entered a world that I had no idea even existed. Because it was 2005, an update was just released where people could wear a Frog Mask, I didn't know this at the time and I was wondering why everyone was wearing them. Something that also stood out to me were players wearing Wizard hats, I thought they looked really cool. When my friends asked me what I wanted to do, I didn't want to make money or train, the first thing was to go into the wilderness, north of Varrock where I was killed and sent back to Lumbridge. Pking became my favourite thing to do on RuneScape and 16 years (and many, many memories) later, players started calling me things like 'The King of F2P Pking' which is really flattering because I still feel like that same noob sometimes, that just wanted to run into the wilderness, not knowing what to do :D Another thing to mention, which might not make sense.. is the audio from this video. Something about the audio of this video.. is just so 2006. It's hard to explain but this is what 2006 felt like. I'd listen to this sort of stuff whilst fishing for lobbies at Catherby so that I could afford a Dragon Longsword.

Man I have lots of videos from 2005 but the TH-cam channel was suspended because I made a video doing that scam where you offer 1m for items and change it to 10k (I was a kid at the time) I believe I have the first RuneScape video on TH-cam. I've contacted TH-cam's support team many times about this but they can't help me because I can't remember the e-mail I used for the channel.. it was 2005 after all :/

Incredible foresight to make a video like this. I'm especially glad you went upstairs and into basements, there was a lot of stuff I had forgotten about. Seeing an old model bathtub reminded me of the countless hours I'd spend in the Falador Mansion which is where the party room now is.

One of my first and best memories of this game during this time period was when my friend gave me 25k and it was the greatest gift ever. He traded it to me right outside the east anvils in Varrock after a "long" trip from Lumbridge. What a time it was to enjoy this beautiful game.
Did anyone else have same gut-wrenching experience as I did when they first heard about OSRD? I went to log in with my account around 2017 that I had made in 2005. I wouldn’t be exaggerating to say I had put thousands of hours into that account. This was me as a kid though and it was the noughties, things like “tick eating” and “prayer flicking” were non-existent. If you wanted dragon plate legs you either had to spam “buying d plegs 5m” in varrock bank on world , or you had to go on the fora and post an ad.. The kalphite queen took 6 of you to kill and you’d still only manage to do it by leaving and coming back. So the account wasn’t the best or the richest. I had got a couple of 99s on that account: magic by Alching whilst watching castle wars and attack by camping the bandit camp. Back then cooking and fletching were the fastest 99s but they still took weeks and weeks. So I went to log in. Then to my horror I was told I couldn’t log in with that account, I had to make a new one. I was honestly crushed. I just wanted to go back to that part of my life 10 or so years ago where I was just a kid who came home from school and then played some runescape. But it wasn’t to be.

This is the year I started. Early 2006. Near Christmas 2005. Damn, nobody can ever replace this feeling of the way RS use to be. Sorry, not even OSRS. I think we all want the feeling we had when we were kids or when we first played, but that feeling can’t and never will be replicated. We were young at the time, because we’re only that age once. Ignorance was bliss and not knowing the ins and outs of the game made it fun. That feeling of being ignorant is no-longer. Even returning to OSRS or RS3 after years of not playing, it won’t evoke the same feeling as it once did. It’ll only create nostalgia. We feel nostalgic because we know even with osrs, there’s no way of going back to feeling blissfully ignorant and still loving to play the game.

Can't tell you how much time I spent just hanging out in Varrock castle courtyard with 100 other people on a Friday night doing nothing. Crazy how different the game was back then. Nobody cared about xp waste, maxed gear, etc. You just played the game.
I'll never forget my first time walking to Varrock when I was 9 back in March of 05, there was no GE and the varrock general store had THOUSANDS of players spamming out trade offers in world 1. I bought a mithril mace from the store for 633 gp and thought I'd never financially recover.. lol

There were several changes applied to the OSRS version that were never in the real 2006 version. I realized that immediately. Worse graphics, faster diminishing of run energy, etc.
@@juliancasablancas3367 They didn't apply the changes, OSRS is the version of the game from August 10th, 2007. So this was already all applied at that point. Idk about the run energy though. But yeah I definitely prefer the old Varrock and old Lesser demons and stuff like that.
@@ghostsade3 I was grinding moss giants when the change happened in varrock sewers. I log in the next day and the moss giants looked totally different. I think that was around when I quit the game. Idk I'm a stubborn guy and I hate unnecessary change. I did play OSRS for awhile though, would have enjoyed 2006scape more.

Not entirely lost; there are private servers which use the same build from before the Varrock update or other updates. One day there will be enough pressure from the true Scapers to either let such a private server take centre stage, or Jagex will be purged of various sicknesses and will adopt it themselves. Constant Tedder's corrupting influence was devastating, but I won't accept that it was permanently disfiguring. Led by players, all good things could come back.
Man I miss this varrock, even though I only started like 6 months before this update it's just way more nostalgic for me. Feels like people stopped gathering in the center after the graphical update came out Good old days, wish I could go back or at least play without worrying about adult responsibilities again. Being an adult and being able to play all day without anyone stopping you isn't as good as it sounded like as a child. I really regret nuking my old runescape videos from from between 2007 and 2008, only reason why I did that is because some people in my school found my channel back then and at that time playing RS was quite taboo. I had so many terrible RSMVs and a video about the HD update and a lot of other terrible stuff which would be amazing to see now
Damn that's nostalgic. I remember everyone always hanging out at the fountain which during Christmas in the year when I started playing got replaced with a Christmas tree. Technically speaking the new models and textures look better, but the Varrock in this video is the Varrock that I prefer. Hell when I think of the shady back alleys with the mugger I think of the version in this video, looks a lot shadier too with the muddy textures and all, now it looks way fancier than it should and because of that there's nothing shady about it.
I played rs for the first time in 2005. I was in fourth grade when my older neighbor showed me. Played hard for years until 2007-2008 and slowly stopped playing once I got into middle school and became more social. Graduated in 2013 and never went back to OSRS bc it never was the same to me. Still can’t describe to my friends that play OSRS now, the level of naatalgia the game brought back then. I still love to game ( Xbox,PlayStation) but I have never and may never find another game that brought me the passion and excitement as original rs. Long live the glory days!
Most of my teenage years were spent in that town. Mining essance and iron, buying things at the west bank, just hanging out with friends at the fountain. Good times.

I remember when I first started playing as a kid in 05 going up to random things and examining them. Even going out of my way to just explore the world, random buildings and things.. My max skill before I stopped playing was 70, but I remember thoroughly enjoying my time and being really zoned into the game. I got back into now with OSRS and got my first 99 a couple years ago, it was something I wanted to achieve but the satisfaction just isn't the same. Worrying about xp rates and gear, but back then getting from Mithril to Addy and saving enough to afford it felt like such an achievement, then after rune, then after adding in a rune trimmed full helm.. what a ride
I played back in these days, really miss when the general store would be full of random shit and everyone would be crowded in the middle of Varrock by the fountain.
My favorite memory in Runescape was back in 2005. I upgraded to a mithril scimitar and hit a 10 for the first time. Double digits felt badass. My worst memory was when I got scammed out of my steel armor that I smithed myself and decided to wear. I was such a dumb 10 year old.
In 2005/2006(?) I literally picked flax and strung bowstrings until I could afford my first whip. I started this game back in RSC and played on and off lemme tell ya this brings back some memories.

Can't tell you how much time I spent just hanging out in Varrock castle courtyard with 100 other people on a Friday night doing nothing. Crazy how different the game was back then. Nobody cared about xp waste, maxed gear, etc. You just played the game.

I'll never forget my first time walking to Varrock when I was 9 back in March of 05, there was no GE and the varrock general store had THOUSANDS of players spamming out trade offers in world 1. I bought a mithril mace from the store for 633 gp and thought I'd never financially recover.. lol

Loved this Varrock. I wish it still had this look, the new one is too polished.
Seems like a niche game picked up by those of us now in our mid to late twenty’s but we can’t get it out of our heads and keep coming back

There were several changes applied to the OSRS version that were never in the real 2006 version. I realized that immediately. Worse graphics, faster diminishing of run energy, etc.
@@juliancasablancas3367 They didn't apply the changes, OSRS is the version of the game from August 10th, 2007. So this was already all applied at that point. Idk about the run energy though. But yeah I definitely prefer the old Varrock and old Lesser demons and stuff like that.
yeah, 2005-2006 graphics were a lot cooler than 2007. GE makes it less interesting too.
@@ghostsade3 I was grinding moss giants when the change happened in varrock sewers. I log in the next day and the moss giants looked totally different. I think that was around when I quit the game. Idk I'm a stubborn guy and I hate unnecessary change. I did play OSRS for awhile though, would have enjoyed 2006scape more.

Not entirely lost; there are private servers which use the same build from before the Varrock update or other updates. One day there will be enough pressure from the true Scapers to either let such a private server take centre stage, or Jagex will be purged of various sicknesses and will adopt it themselves. Constant Tedder's corrupting influence was devastating, but I won't accept that it was permanently disfiguring. Led by players, all good things could come back.

Man I miss this varrock, even though I only started like 6 months before this update it's just way more nostalgic for me. Feels like people stopped gathering in the center after the graphical update came out
Good old days, wish I could go back or at least play without worrying about adult responsibilities again. Being an adult and being able to play all day without anyone stopping you isn't as good as it sounded like as a child. I really regret nuking my old runescape videos from from between 2007 and 2008, only reason why I did that is because some people in my school found my channel back then and at that time playing RS was quite taboo. I had so many terrible RSMVs and a video about the HD update and a lot of other terrible stuff which would be amazing to see now

Damn that's nostalgic. I remember everyone always hanging out at the fountain which during Christmas in the year when I started playing got replaced with a Christmas tree.
Technically speaking the new models and textures look better, but the Varrock in this video is the Varrock that I prefer.
Hell when I think of the shady back alleys with the mugger I think of the version in this video, looks a lot shadier too with the muddy textures and all, now it looks way fancier than it should and because of that there's nothing shady about it.

I played rs for the first time in 2005. I was in fourth grade when my older neighbor showed me. Played hard for years until 2007-2008 and slowly stopped playing once I got into middle school and became more social. Graduated in 2013 and never went back to OSRS bc it never was the same to me. Still can’t describe to my friends that play OSRS now, the level of naatalgia the game brought back then. I still love to game ( Xbox,PlayStation) but I have never and may never find another game that brought me the passion and excitement as original rs. Long live the glory days!

The algorithm has brought me back in time, I needed this today
I remember when I first started playing as a kid in 05 going up to random things and examining them. Even going out of my way to just explore the world, random buildings and things.. My max skill before I stopped playing was 70, but I remember thoroughly enjoying my time and being really zoned into the game.
I got back into now with OSRS and got my first 99 a couple years ago, it was something I wanted to achieve but the satisfaction just isn't the same. Worrying about xp rates and gear, but back then getting from Mithril to Addy and saving enough to afford it felt like such an achievement, then after rune, then after adding in a rune trimmed full helm.. what a ride
I miss this. Loads of people just standing around, wearing whatever they liked. Nobody worried about maximizing XP or best in slot items.
I played back in these days, really miss when the general store would be full of random shit and everyone would be crowded in the middle of Varrock by the fountain.

My favorite memory in Runescape was back in 2005. I upgraded to a mithril scimitar and hit a 10 for the first time. Double digits felt badass. My worst memory was when I got scammed out of my steel armor that I smithed myself and decided to wear. I was such a dumb 10 year old.

For some reason, finally making it to mithril felt so much bigger than Rune.

In 2005/2006(?) I literally picked flax and strung bowstrings until I could afford my first whip. I started this game back in RSC and played on and off lemme tell ya this brings back some memories.
I thought this was the first time I've watched this video, but then I heard that song and holy shit... I probably last watched this video around 13 years ago or more. Crazy how a song and old footage can just bring you way back.

those days after middle school, coming home, joining a low player server, grinding or just walking around listening to from first to last, silverstein, aiden, etc. i dont miss alot of things but that feeling of getting lost in fantasy when i was younger. now im older games dont really get me lost in that same feelings as runescape did when i was younger haha the atreyu track hittin different, dial up computers sucked when im pvping and we get a call and the internet shuts off 😂
