WoW! Someone on TH-cam demoing gear, who can actually play their instrument and seems to know how to properly pull tones from a piece of gear for demo purposes. Miracles DO still happen in this world after all! And without all of the unprofessional yapping' to go with it! :-P So tired of TH-cam "players" who are anything but players, when it comes to equipment demos. Thanks for the straightforward demo... whoever you are! :-)
Yep, the only thing that could have improved it greatly, would have been putting the relevant demos together, such as LP HSL1HR, then LP DSL20HR directly after, so you can instantly compare the difference. Rather than marking down the times for that guitar and having to switch between them to get a feel for the different nuances in tone etc.
Good comparison but wish a better zoom of the dial settings would have been nice. Update:FYI, the distortion for the 1W @ 2:30, I did some capture and zoomed and got the know positions: Reverb 0 Bass 2 (9:00) Middle 4.8 (short of 12:00) Trebel 10 Volume 4 Gain 10 Channel Select button - left light lit Volume 10
Love the sound of the 1w with the tele.. There's just something magical happens when you plug a tele into a Marshall!! I wasn't to keen on the high gain les paul tone..I think an overdrive would sort this though! Great demo
I bought one of these and didn’t like it. I had the amp listed on reverb. Meanwhile I bought my first Tele and tried it on this amp and loved it. It’s no longer for sale. It’s now my main amp for my tele.
Thank you for this very comprehensive demo!! Just what I needed after realizing at last night's band practice my DSL100 is just too loud to turn up and get the sweet spot of it's tonal capability! I think the 20-watt would be almost perfect for what I need. I guess my next step is to give it a test at GC to hear it in person. But again, thanks, and great playing! I really appreciate you doing different styles through it. BTW- the chord you let ring out at 5:13 told me all I needed to know about this amp!)
Somebody VERY VERY skilled is operating and playing these amps. It's even educational to look at the settings for each guitar and sound :-). Well done!
Great review! Thanks for TRULY going through a wide variety of sounds. Never liked this amp in any of the other reviews I watched, but now I'm actually considering it.
Thanks for all of the variations you created for your clip, it was good to hear some good clean sounds.More clean or a little breakup type tones would be welcome as nobody else has done it. BTW the Starplayer sounds very cool, we likey! Thanks again.
1w is irrelevant to running a 412 🤦♂️ why does everyone think you need 100w to run a 412.... 1w will do the job just fine! I have a 15w head that runs two 412 and absolute and is the most aggressive thing you’ll ever lay ears too.
I have the DSL 20 head, unbelievable!!! It sounds so amazing. Love playing the Classic Gain breaking up with a Strat. SG for the Ultra Gain, can't go wrong...
Hello mate, I just come from the shop where I tried these 2 excellent lads. The 20HR fitted me more, so I got with it, and it somehow got even better than a OR30 (the leads were better on the Marshall). I combined it with a Orange 2x12 cab though, and this config was actually the best of both worlds : Marshall's clarity matched really well Orange's heaviness. :) The 1HR is surprisingly good though, and was even better than the DSL 20W combo, which I found a bit fussy for the gain setup... The head is far better. By the way : I saw your vid after I chose my amp, so I expected nothing particular. Still, I'd like to thank you for performing an actual review, with rythms, chords, palms, and anything useful. And not one of these unsufferable hard-rock / blues licks, that emphasize nothing but the ego of the player... (which you need to go through when trying to get an overview before trying yourself :p ) Thanks for your job!
I have the DSL1 and enjoy it a lot. The downside is the clean channel is overly bright. A bit harsh on the ears. Considering removing the bright cap. However the DSL20 clean sounds smooth. Is there a big volume difference? I have vol on about 5, but with an attenuator, and in the 0.1W position so would be concerned the 20watt is far too loud for an apartment. It could be a lot more versatile besides just the clean channel too, with the presence control etc.
I bought the 20 and a 4x12marshall cab And now everyday after work I have to play it The sound and feel of the tube amp is just... wow , just try it, it's beautiful
Perfect demo!!! There's nothing more aggravating than someone who claims to be demo'ing an amp then they run every pedal on their damned pedalboard wide open. This video is exactly what a demo should be... accurate and informative!!! I've had a DSL-20HR for a few months now and I can say from experience that these things sound great. Especially through a 4×12" cab.
I just found this channel after sifting through literately HUNDREDS of crap channels doing excessive talking, unboxing, and worthless opinions before even getting to the SOUNDS of the amps / guitars / pedals etc… this channel is a friggin GOLD MINE of valuable comparison and test videos… no longer do we all need to waste valuable time listening to garbage unboxing and “opinions”… we can all just come here and LISTEN to well produced videos that get right to it. I have a 1W and it is an amazing little amp. The speakers and settings can change the sound dramatically. I run it into a 412 cab or 210 cab at times. I think you would probably need to hear and diddle with it in person to really see what you can do with it. For a small amp, it gets louder than I want to listen to it in a good sized room. One thing I really liked about it was that it was extremely quiet when not playing. I've seen some small tube amps that have all sorts of static noise when not playing. Cool amp.
I have DSL20HR brilliant amp. Play with all the knobs and settings like in the demo👍. I use celestion V30's and a Two Notes Captor X to turn it up. LP, tele, strat, 335 all sound amazing. Great demo👍
Wow I'm shocked how good the 1hr sounds. I need something cheap (inflation era cheap, the Dsl 20hr was the price the 1 watt was 4 years ago lol)to get me by for a year. The 1hr may be the ticket.
As the Brits would say "Noice" (that's NICE) ...and this is. Now I truly know what these amps sound like. Love them both. Great playing and thanks for doing this.
Hans Gustafson ,not really better off getting the 20hr, loud enough to gig and 10watt mode for home practice . I tried both but ended up getting the 20, believe me you won't be disappointed
Honestly the single watt is louder than you think. A 10 watt is twice as loud as a 1 watt. And a 100watt is only 4 times as loud as a single, so when you think about it that way a 1w can still be pretty loud. I've played this amp and trust me when I say it's louder than people realize.
@@JoshChristiane 1 watt won't be able to compete with a drummer and other instruments with a clean sound. Now if you play with the gain and volume pots maxed out, that small head will for sure gets heard through a good cab but it's not designed for playing live. I have gigged with a Blackstar 5W 2x10" combo and it's ok in bars (if your band pays attention to the overall volume) and small clubs (mic'ed up with a PA) but 15 watt will provide with much better headroom for playing live.
@@fendafred Yeah that's mostly true, depends on the exact speaker and amp as well though, because some 1watt amps are a lot louder than others due to speaker efficiency and internal gain staging or whatever else. I used to have a half watt amp that I practiced with (drummer, and loud bass included) and it was more than loud enough to cut through the mix for distortion at least. I imagine if you want a really hyper clean tone that's when you do need a lot more power, so excellent point!
I had one question that wasn't answered by this video. Can I get solid, sparkling, low-gain cleans from the dsl1h as can be done with the dsl20h? i'm going to be using either the 20h or 1h as a bedroom amplifier and i don't want to invest in an amp that doesn't have enough headroom to clean up entirely, especially as i'm going to be running pedals into it. Thanks for any advice!
@Joe R I think it's worth to invest in an attenuator (like the Bugera PS1 power soak) for bedroom volume. It allows you to crank the amp and get a nice drive on the tubes, but still keeping it at low volume.

Great comparison :) good I bought DSL 20 :) as it sound fuller for me - and it is only about 80 dollars more here :)
Why is my "channel select" button with its lights turned off (dsl20hr)?
Is Your pedal hooked up? If yes, You can only switch channels by that.
I wonder how an archtop sounds through that?
The Tele purrs!
20 watts does sound better but probably too loud for me. Guess I should just stick with my 1 watter
The Tele says, play some Stones quick!
