I was just about to comment something like this! seriously, it's so cool, and immediately knowing 60 seconds was WAY too long for a trick like that? I'm really glad this was the show he reacted to because I think some of the tricks he does in later interactions are completely fantasy, which is a bummer, but I love that they give him such a good mix of cheap tricks and real crazy stuff

"Magicians should not have that big an ego" Normally i agree, however Lyney is very cool so he gets an exception. I mean he has the confidence to wear a skintight corset, no clothes over it, the thing is practically shaped like a onesie, and it somehow doesn't look bad so he really must be the best magician

“Everyone knew the brilliant "Great Magician Lyney," but they loved only the mystery, the romance, the unattainable nature. They knew no love for the heart that lay deeper within.
He felt he had no right to pour out his mind to others, and yet he must carry on with gritted teeth, for the price of a fall from such heights was more than he could bear.

I have a twin too and our birthday is the same day as Lyney and Lynette! My sister wasn't gonna get Lyney until she found that out. Then she immediately pulled him lol! Now there's canonically four twins in both our worlds with 2/2 as their birthday. Aether, Lumine, Lyney Lynette. If they ever start adding birthday messages in the mail from/for the abyss twin, it's gonna get REALLY hectic in our inboxes on our birthday... Also I share my birthday not just with my twin but also with another one of my sisters.
So if we count the birthdays of every member of my family i share it with, and every genshin character that i or someone i know will get messages for/from, my birthday celebrates...
Myself, my sister, my other sister, Lyney, Lynette, Aether, Lumine...

since lyney and lynette are twins, they can wear eachothers clothing and look like eachother, and the conversation between ‘lyney’ and his assistant was staged and lyneys voice was recorded by a phonograph (recording device), and lynette left from the back of the box outside the audience’s view

I keep coming back to this cutscene because there's so much to it. Earlier in the game Liney and Lynette introduce the traveler about a famous prophecy of their land.
And this show was made all about the prophecy and how they think is gonna happen i guess? But then someone else takes the opportunity to blame Lyney on a crime that relates to the prophecy.
The first introduction of this region is to the area of high class, living on their own bubble people that will overlook anything bad. It's the perfect kind of scenario to commit a crime and get away with it.
When originally it was meant to be a learning experience about at least one of the problems of the region to the opera audience.
Wow- just- WOW. I was going to type something similar in the comments- but I couldn’t have said it better myself. You absolutely nailed explaining what Fontaine is about and what the issues it has. It’s advanced but a lot of it is corrupt with crimes slipping away easily.
If we look at how easy it was to blame Lyney or how the twins’s past for example, no one did much to sway for Lyney being innocent and no one did anything to help the twins when they were on their own as little kids. It’s a type of danger that’s being ignored and shoved under the bridge when it shouldn’t be. Who knows if it may cause Fontaine’s downfall? This is the fourth chapter of the story and where the stakes are high. So anything is fair game. Whatever happens now will defiantly be something that’ll shake the flow of the story forever
I love the themes that Genshin teaches. As a writer it’s amazing.
I love how genshin keeps attracting irl professionals of every workforce to look at their characters and the story as well as the game it's so cool
I appreciate you analyzing the whole trick without even playing the story yet and that's awesome. I, on other hand, just enjoyed being an audience during all this time. Haha.
And you questioning where the girl went is so funny to me. That question is going so deep into theories territory nowadays since the ending of the case is buried in layers and maybe will be continued onto the next chapters.
Fontaine is built in a steampunk Victorian era. So the tear drop on his face holds little meaning (until and if hoyo gives it meaning) in the victorian era they used shapes like stars, moons, drops, and so on as status, beauty, and decoration for their faces.

I think their face tattoos are supposed to be a bit of a play on traditional comedy and tragedy masks

This is so cool, I was wondering what real magicians would think of Lyney's show, I also had no idea having a teardrop mark suggests being a killer? That's probably a subtle misdirection for us players as well
The teardrop = having killed a man is a prison thing, it can also mean having lost a loved one. However, personally I doubt hoyoverse had this in mind when designing the twins, to me their stage makeup (because I don't believe they are tattoos) are more "clowny", as there are happy clowns and sad clowns. I like that they gave Lyney and Lynette marks that contrast with their personalities though - with Lyney, who is quite cheery and outgoing having the sad tear, and Lynette, who is more withdrawn and poker face'd having the happy star.
The teardrop is a reference to Pierrot from the Commedia dell'arte (the sad clown)
All of the fatui harbingers are named after characters from said performance, so it's fitting that Lyney bears symbolism from one of the minor roles since he was adopted by Arlecchino. It's interesting to note that in the play, Arlecchino basically steals away the person Pierrot is in love with (Columbine) which is interesting since in Genshin, Arlecchino steals away his adopted parents 😂

I like how even the irl magician is intrigued by the murder mystery. The 60 second countdown is rather long, but it was because the magician twins work for a mafia-like organization and needed a chance to sneak around underground.
You did get it right that Lynette was the one who showed up very briefly in the box that was on the stage for a moment since she wasn't speaking. She also covered herself with the top hat out of embarrassment to make it believable that she was Lyney, but did it in a way that covered her cat ears.
I loved seeing your reaction! Lyney also seemed very cool to me Lynette as well, I even wanted to learn some tricks haha

I wish they animated the star tattoo on the twin pretending to be the others so that some good-catching audience like you could figure out how the trick is done. It’s split-second anyway and most would miss it. Anyway you definitely guess 90% of the trick, and even the magician himself didnt know how the assistant and the girl swapped. Very impressive!
i suspect that the marks are actually makeup? probably specifically because even before doing this trick, they conceived of the kind of tricks they could play as near-identical twins; they need to be able to fool even the front row, after all

so they both have idle animations where they do tricks with their hats, and i saw them play right next to each other and realized lynette's hat is smaller! so its likely that lyney specifically commissioned a hat that was large enough to tuck lynette's ears into (with the added benefit of also being able to store more tricks in it)

Most people have preferences which is used to judge mostly by people so pretty much this is bound to happen but I didn't think it was this bad.
I pondered a lot about the water tank trick.
If the tank itself could have a mechanism/compartment to eject bubbles from the bottom.
1. Lynette was not in the tank, it was just mirrors or projections. (but she clearly was outside and entered 5:00 )
2. Lynette was in a separate compartment behind the one where bubbles/clothes are floating, where she can escape from during the fizzle.
3. There was never water in the inside of the tank, Lynette was suspended on wires from the lid.
At the finale of his story quest, lyney also did a trick his predecessor failed, basically the same but instead of water tank, the box was suspended high up in the air. He did say that the magician goes out from the top, where it was hidden from the audience that sits at the bottom. I was always assuming lynette did that and hid behind it(where theres a mirror in the tank to hide her when she is behind the tank and make it seems like the tank is transparent), while waiting for lyney to distract the audience and jumped away.

Lyney's ego (5:28-5:58) as magician seems connected to his other job[s] that has some violent side 🤯 I think it's a very good hint for the plot~ It may also explain his teardrop tattoo (2:50-3:02) you've guessed! I have no knowledge on tattoo, so I just got one from you hahah.. Thank you for the sharing.

tbh you can probably replicate the actual magic trick as how it was supposed to be intended since the whole murderer thing wasnt planned at all and the water tank wasnt supposed to fall at the end there.

a little correction: the visions are not given out by the Archons themselves, but are “gifted” by Celestia. Basically everything is done by that place: who’s gonna be the Archon, who can get a vision, who can ascend to Celestia - all comes from up there!

@@Termsofseveto be true, most of the story comes from the dialogues, and you can easily miss them if you didn't pay close attention. And we all know most of Genshin players, also known as "dialogue skippers", pretty much just assumes most of the lore, and the lore enthusiasts have to correct them, leading to a war.😅😅
A true magician, he guessed everything accurately without seeing the rest of the story where they reveal the trick.

@@kawansiesquad6659 I assumed the hat trick used some clear string. It’s possibly the string was always attached to Lyney’s hat and was loose but it became taut when Lyney was making it float. Buuut it’s also possible Lyney attached the string right before he made the hat float, as for the water tank, like what he said, they probably did video recording of some sorts

Damn when you said “this is an inside job” it’s clicked on my detective brain! The main stage assistant would stayed beside the box to check on the girl, right?

My hypothesis is that Lyney and Lynette knew about Cowell’s plot to turn the girl into water. But here’s the thing, remember when Lyney asked us to go find the thief? I think he was making a deal with the thief to be apart of the show since the randomized was rigged to be Halsey seat but Liliane’s form Mondstatd so she couldn’t be turned into water. BUT he didn’t know about the part that water tank crashing down so she wrestled with him and ended up stuffed the unconscious Cowell into the box and hide in the prop box and snooped around the whole time while the opera house is in lockdown. There’s a loophole in this hypothesis so another theory,
this is a big BUT I think the two knew about Halsey’s “disappearance” because the true culprit is a serial killer who selected his victims before committing the crimes and the oceanid we met at the end talked about how her arts could have been displayed on a famous gallery. This can explain the rigged randomizer and why Lyney according to the first hypothesis isn’t the true culprit of Cowell’s death. Because to Cowell, Liliane is Halsey so he carried out the act and was killed by his own trick. To the true culprit Cowell is better dead than alive in anyway and if Liliane was killed instead of Cowell then it would be even better; he could put the blame on Lyney and the Fatui. But Lyney chose the right person to take this role, his ass got saved by so many chances of circumstance. I still believe that he didn’t expect Liliane to put Cowell inside the box; he was only expecting him to be knocked out laying somewhere under the stage so he could interrogate Cowell and have Liliane be the witness of the one scheme of the serial disappearance of young women.
Unless Lyney is going to pull out some weird stunt out of his arse and the “facts” from the trial were true, I believe these hypotheses to be one part of the explanations for why he didn’t get the guilty verdict from the oratrice.
You know what is also a very strange thing - that she stole the ticket, so police after checking her should also find that the real one, who should sit on that place was alive and on her place, also quite strange, that someone stole her ticket, but she did not go to the police, therefore police should know that the specific place, cos all places are preordered, was taken by a thief... Dunno if they knew about water tank crash, probably not.
I mean, all what happen may be just a gaming convention and simplified to do not overload with details, but as a lawyer I can say, that the case will go into very different direction if they will find that the real owner of that sit was alive and did not disappear and if the ticket was really stolen, it was very easy to find out, only if Halsey was not warned before, so she did not report the loss of an expensive ticket and maybe hide somewhere for a while, so police did not find her and had no reasons to think that it was not Halsey sitting on that place. Will not talk about the case itself and the process, this is another topic, but you may be right, that Lyney and Lynette knew about Cowell’s plans, but did not knew about water tank.
Lmao while your theory was an interesting read, I honestly think you are thinking too much about Lyney being the center of it all. Lyney is more of an entertainer, not a schemer. Hence, the reason why the Oratrice marked him as not guilty is just as simple as that: he was not involved in any way with Cowell's death. As far as I see, Lyney is only another chess piece in a much larger plan---one that is orchestrated by Arlecchino. Of course, I don't know how far Arlecchino has her hands in the events thus far, but I do feel like she was aware of the actual serial killer and was the one who told the Oceanid to approach the Traveler. Arlecchino was also the one who directed Lyney and Lynette to approach the Traveler, so it is safe to assume that everything that happened thus far was within her calculations.

@@Xelluseyou make good points, though I do not think Fontaine trials are very good. At least in the US, we would not need to find the murderer, just prove Lyney is innocent, if I recall correctly. I suspect Navia and Spina did investigate if Halsey was alive, while Furina did not see the point and did not request it of the official police.
@@Saga_Anserum That's why I said - "Will not talk about the case itself and the process, this is another topic", cos yes, the litigation is very far from what it is in reality, and the conduct of the case itself is quite long and boring process, so they kept the basic elements and the core, but simplified it for artistic purposes.
Not only in the United States, in any normal country, a person is, firstly, innocent until the court rules otherwise, and secondly, the task of the defense is not to look for a criminal, but to protect the rights of his client, which includes ensuring and asserting of innocence, although only the accuser is required by law to prove , but the defense has the right to take on the burden of proving the innocence of their client, and a scenario is technically possible when the defense can help find the real criminal, but this is not part of their duties, so Furina, to her question - "if not him, then who?", will receive a simple answer - "it's your job to find the criminal, Madam Attorney, not my."

One thing about this that I think a lot of people missed... including perhaps Hoyoverse themselves... is that Lynette doesn't have human ears, just cat ears, yet when she dresses in Lyney's clothes, you can clearly see human ears. Is she wearing fake human ears? They look real enough, though.
It could be attached to a wig/hair pins used to replicate Lyney`s hairstyle?
Well she is far enough from the audience, so if the ears are fake then they would not be too easy to notice in such short time.

So...The 60 seconds count down was important because Liney was doing some..."background stuff" and he was counting (pun intended) with the fact that so many people counting would make it longer so he could do his stuff

Common misconception, but visions aren't actually granted by the Archons themselves. You can cite Raiden Shogun's voice line "About the Vision." I think this will be an important story/lore tid bit by the time we get to Khaneri'ah
They kinda are, it's just instead of intentionally giving them its more of a automatic obligation, but it still comes from the archons. They can influence it too, like Raiden did unknowingly.

I can't imagine there would ever be a trapdoor in the middle of an aisle like that. Not only would it be super obvious, but also very hazardous. I know some big stages do have trapdoors on the actual stage (but don't tell anyone)
they use the opera house as both for entertainment and trials so i imagine he can to an extent just needs to get permission
They revealed how the swapping trick was done.
The real reason for the long countdown was so Lyney could sneak into the room where the mechanical judgment machine is located via a vent shaft in the tunnel. Lyney explained it was really 75 seconds, if I remember right. Why he didn't access this vent while they were setting up the tunnel and track is beyond me.
I've wondered the exact same thing. They had the ability to set up everything under there but not the ability to sneak into the room that they built a vent to directly connect to when nobody was looking?
This seems fairly obvious to me. He didn’t do it while they were setting up because there were probably other people in the basement at the time (part of his staff, maybe guards for the opera, etc). During the trick is probably the only time the basement was expected to be completely empty (outside of those involved with the trick directly) and the vent accessible without detection, as everyone would be engaged watching the performance at that time. It’s possible that his own staff was not aware of his ultimate goal of investigating the Oratrice so he would not want to do it when they’re around (the now dead guy in the basement was clearly not supposed to be there and the girl was not supposed to exit the box for the duration of the trick, only her, Lyney, and Lynette were meant to be down there at any point time). So the trick duration (75 seconds) was the only time he could maybe guarantee nobody could see him enter the vent except potentially Lynette herself.
I feel like Genshin has become darker and darker over time... It went from vaguely mentioning a long since dead person to literally killing a charcter on-screen
The fact you solved most of the case just by looking at this footage, to be fair, after rewatching it having finished the quest, there were so many little parts that i now notice

Leney asked for a 60 sec countdown so he can have time to go behind the scenes and investigate the "Oracle d'analyse mécanique cardinale", which is basically a senteint machine that gives the final judgment in the courte/stage. And this's the real reason they're there
the difference between the amount of views and subs is unbelievable 💀.

Like the other people said, I would've love to see your reaction to the story being unveiled, too bad you already played through it. This was probably my favorite archon quest (recency bias probably have a role to play) there was so many twist and turns.I got spoiled the first part but there was so many twists that it didnt even matter lol. Even though it is not combat heavy like the other ones were still very good.
Also I really liked that you knew about the part where Lynett was disguised as Lyney and the voice was just a recording. When Lynett came out and her mouth did not move, I would have just regarded it as animation error but you caught it haha
They do go through how they did the swap trick later in the game! It was so neat. The water tank one wasn't told though, so we're guessing on that one haha
I suspect mirrors, since Lynette`s clothes were not in the wreckage of the tank. Idk how it would actually work, though.

It’s funny you picked up on the “audience” girl’s reaction to the Genshin Prison line, but brush it off as stage fright because while it pertained to the murder mystery it didn’t exactly pertain to the actual tricks.

Lynette really was in the box right before the reveal with Lyneys clothes.
The number selector really was rigged and the person that died (Cowell) rigged it to choose a carefully selected seat, because the member of the audience was supposed to be a fontanian woman (A person that was born in fontaine - the region the events were happening in), because Cowell turned out to be a murderers accomplice to a man who's fontanian wife dissolved into water, so in order to find a way of getting her back, he experimented into fontanian women, but you cant be dissolved into water if you're from another nation. The girl displayed was a thief that stole the fontanian woman's ticket and she was from another nation. Cowell tried to fight her to make her dissolve and pin it on Lyney, so he attached special rope that was supposed to burn down when the pyrotechnics were activated, making it look like an accident.
But the thief overpowered cowell and ended up accidentally murdering him and tucket his body into the box. Cowell poured the water from the primordial sea that makes fontanian citizens dissolve, but it didn't work on her since she stole the ticket and was from another nation (also when you buy a ticket they look at your information, that's why he knew a fontanian woman was supposed to sit on that seat). The fight explained the thud we heard during the countdown.
Lyney couldn't interfere because he went in another room to investigate a device in the opera house and that was his only opportunity if im not mistaken, but I'd not go into detail.
The hydro archon (Water God) blamed lyney for the actions and the main character had to be lyney and lynettes attorneys in a court case with the judge Neuvilette, the person sitting next to us in the audience during the show.
We ended up winning the case and that was the whole truth and the hydro archon ended up accusing an innocent person
Edit: Also I forgot to mention there really was a trapdoor underneath, but it really was expected

Having had to force-quit the game almost right after getting to this point (I didn't correctly interpret "leaving the opera house" as leaving the lower seating area and am hoping the deliberate crash prevented my quest from continuing too far too soon) and thus not having hard information about the intended script yet, my own bets are... as it turns out after listening to the rest of this, the same as yours:
* I was thinking Pepper's Ghost as well for the water tank, given the strong lighting; using a second water tank would have both made it almost impossible to see any flaws in the illusion and help with keeping a second set of clothes in the obvious water tank invisible at first. (It may also have either helped fool or reassure Furina to use another water tank that she could possibly sense. That trick wasn't really in the best of taste, although it's also not surprising.)
* Lyney really was trying to select a random audience member. Sixty long seconds is more than enough time to move a completely passive person provided you don't need Lyney available during that time, and his sister was conveniently offstage long enough to be able to briefly appear as him if needed. I didn't have a recording to pause and check again, but she wasn't onstage while her job was being done, so presumed that was her.
* Those masks are going to make it much harder to keep track of the assistants' locations, precise number and identities. Especially as the script for the stage distracted people from the audience area at points.
while i just put the water one as "video game logic" i knew instantly how will he do the tp when i saw the 2 boxes
|| SPOILER ALERT FOR THE QUEST ||
To make a long story short:
The guy with the checker pattern mask is named Cowell. He intended to kill the girl who got selected from the audience, but she realized and managed to escape the box, entering the lower level of the opera house. Cowell noticed she got out and tried to put her back in, but she knocked him unconcious and put him in the box, unaware that the water tank was set up by Cowell himself to fall on the box.

1:27 you are incorrect here. MULTIPLE in game lines tell us that the Archons (the 7 gods of each nation/element) have NO sway or influence over who gets those and who doesn't. Because why would the Hydro Archon of Fontaine give visions of her element to people born in other nations??
Ei (Inazumas Archon) herself was shocked to learn no new electro vision has appeared for years. She confirmed that it is Celestia itself (the BIG gods, who are over even the Archons themselves) who dole out visions to people.
Actually, and I know you probably wanted to simplify for non Genshin players, but the Archons (elemental Gods and simultaneously official regent of a nation) don't bestow the visions, Celestia (higher jurisdiction of gods) does. However, we only know this because we are the main character and have access to information the common citizens in the world of Genshin don't, so the people you meet in game wholeheartedly believe visions are bestowed by their Archons. It's a nifty little bit of world building in my opinion 🤓
Personally felt that the CN dub captured the "classy magician" vibe much better than the eng dub, which IMO didn't capture it at all
You figured it out almost! As this is a fantasy game, this accident relates to something that doesn't exist in our real world, so it is ok if you can't tell everything.
1:27 The Visions aren't actually bestowed by the gods of the Vision's element (at least as far as we can tell), supported by Raiden Shogun mentioning that she was not aware that no Electro Visions were granted during the Vision Hunt Decree and saying "it is not by my will that Visions are granted or denied". Inazumans and others had just assumed it was the Raiden Shogun herself not granting them.
It was very interesting to listen to the thoughts of a professional) Once again I am convinced that the writers put a lot of work into the story. They probably watched dozens of magic shows to create this.
