I can't thank you enough for making these videos, both for the value of preserving knowledge for future generations and the simple pleasure of a relaxing form of entertainment that is pleasing to watch and stimulates the brain in a calm way. There's so much bad stuff going on in our nation and it feels like every day brings even worse news than the day before. So it's really great to have a safe hangout spot where everything is chill and normal.
You are such a craftsman. Not many left with the knowledge and dedication to take the time to truly do it right. Thanks a ton for keeping the craft alive.
Gotta tell ya man you are the most transparent and real person I have ever seen. Your love for boats and woodworking is so obvious with every swipe of a block plane, every touch you make on the structure, even the way you describe her beauty is so real...even the mistakes you make is something everyone can learn from you...like bending the stem all the work and labor you put in and have it fail, but you blame no one and just try again...every video I learn so much from you, yes building a boat sure...but honestly your love and patience is something I am learning from you and I am a young 71 year old...please keep up the work and the videos...I watch them 2 or 3 times in case I missed something. Thank you!
I LOVE this mans deep philosophic approach to his profession - if only more people thought that deeply about what they do along with how and why they are doing it. Innovation truly is the key.
We are not taught often enough in school how much intelligence has gone into the craftsmanship that humanity has developed over thousands of years. The inventor of the dovetail was as much of a genius as Bach or Ovid but he or she is lost to history. Now Lou's creative mastery can be preserved and viewed for the foreseeable future. We live in a wonderful age to be able to see not only his workmanship, but his thought process.
Agree. Lou is not constrained by old techniques or making a new plastic/composite boat but doing the best (for him) of both. His techniques might not be 100% the most accurate way possible but they are accurate enough and I bet that boat is still 99% square when done.
There is just something about using a hand plane to fine tune a piece of wood. Such a satisfying sound! Thanks for sharing this one and keep up the great work.

Then, the second season I actually understand the terms you are using... kind of. By the third season I should be able to carry on a conversation with you. In stead of... WOW, look at that bent thing on the front of the boat!
Here in Newfoundland some people call them flats, which might refer to the flat bottoms but also the flat packed nature in which they'd be bundled for assembly as needed
The drawn out intro was, I think, Lou showing us the importance of feeding his body and brain, further fuelling his immense patience and carefully thought out plan. Perhaps even leading to a revised, better plan! My dad called it conceptualizing. Very cool illustration! And don't even talk about the square slowly drawn down across the stem!! Pure elegance. Lou builds boats like Ferrari builds cars. P.S. Where's the pupper?
Easily one of the best series I have ever seen on TH-cam. Lou should get an honorary PhD and a Maritime Academy Hall named after him. Or maybe leaving him out of traditional Academia is the best compliment. The filming is excellent too.
I have fully enjoyed the entire first and now second season - and check youtube every day for the next episodes as they roll out. This is like the best thing on youtube. I'm about to build my second dory of sorts and this video could not be better timed for me. Go Louis!
I really appreciated the history lesson; it gave some fantastic context to us non-experts. Maybe for the next project, you could do this up front? I've realised over the years, with all sorts of projects, that you need to have a clear understanding of where you want to go before you try to figure out out how to get there, so any extra information really helps me follow along.
These videos are wonderful, reminds me of days working at a boatshop in Eastport, Me. It is clear you have great passion for every part of the process and love working with wood.

I wasn't sure if he was human or a sophisticated robot. Still not sure but he does consume food. I watch all his videos and know I could never learn/remember 5% of his boat building skills but it is so interesting. It spans somewhere between boring and fascinating. Who wouldn't want a boat built by this master? I just bought some white oak for my outdoor fireplace mantle and I'm okay with the fact it isn't going to touch Frenchman's Bay in Bar Harbor. But we can dream!

As it turns out, I've long wished for a good Swampscott option to split the difference between Chaisson's famous old 12-1/2-footer, and the more common 16/17-foot-LOA size like Gardner's well-known example of this type. With your apparently rather steep stem angle, you look to have most of the waterline length of the bigger working models, but a shorter LOA at the rail... I believe you mentioned something like 14 feet overall during the design/lofting earlier? Yeah, so... I think I'm gonna need a copy of these lines for myself, Please!
I'm in Florida surrounded by huge live oaks, they got curves and bends galore, IDK if you can use live oak for boats but I'm 1000% sure I could cut any bend you want. I could throw a rock from my back yard and hit four limbs as big as a basketball with a curve like that stem you bent. Could you use it?

I'm very impressed, sir. If you'd been around a couple thousand years earlier I bet God would have asked YOU to build His ark...would have saved the good Lord a lotta trouble figuring out dimensions and such...
Any issues with the scrap cross pieces beneath the weights adhering to the planks? I would guess you have a tough time removing them from that soft cedar without tear-out. Just curious, because I didn't see you put packing tape or wax paper between the surfaces before tossing the lead bars on top.
zillustration I saw clear tape on the wood pieces under the lead, you can see they are shiny. You can see the tape on the ends of all the spreader bars.
Steve Lippincott because with a flat surface you can remove the broken planking and replace. If it's jointed or rabbitted the you cannot fix the planks without a lot of trouble.
