Happy Tolkien Reading Day! The day Yoystan is not involved in a TH-cam Tolkien day is the day when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day! 😁
“It shall be so. Legolas upon my left, and Aragorn upon my right, and none will dare to stand before us.”
-Eomer
Seems like a fitting quote and I always enjoyed it.
Friendship.
The one power Sauron or morgoth could never understand
You forgot one of the strongest and longest lasting friendships; Morgoth and Sauron. Even during the Second Age, after his friend was exiled through the Door of Night, Sauron had Numenor build a temple to Morgoth. Just because they are bad guys doesn't mean they're bad friends.
Happy Tolkien Reading Day, my friend! On this Friendship-themed TRD, I am so thankful for your friendship and being such an encouragement since my earliest days on this platform. You're the best, Yoystan! Can't wait for our LOTRO stream tomorrow!
Right back at you Matt! I am very thankful for your friendship and your positivity man. Can't wait to see where you go from here! See you tomorrow brother!
The friendship of MotW, Nerd of the Rings, and The Broken Sword is the best friendship in Middle Earth.
@@jimmytony564 Agreed! I imagine if Fankil was to rise in the east as the third Dark Lord, it would be Yoystan, Nerd of the Rings and the Broken Sword who would strike him down in the same manner Elendil & Gil-Galad did Sauron X)
Finrod is almost everyone's friend .He is so dreamy .I want to hug him .
You won't believe it if I tell you that Finrod appears in a flashback in Amazon's Rings of Power. He is that helmetless, short-haired elf yelling while fighting orcs in the teaser trailer apparently.
You forgot one of the greatest friendships, the Friendship of Men of the West, Nerd of the Rings, The Broken Sword and many other Tolkien channels that give us more and more Middleearth!
A great tophic and a great video!
Im so proud to be a Tolkien fan, happy Tolkiens reading day to all!!
I have answered the call and have called upon others do join the cause. I believe in us.
LoTR's friendships is where all men aren't scared to call out each other "bro" both manly yet caring way.
Sam and Frodo's bond was stronger than words. The Fellowship was a close group and Tolkien focused on these in the first book of LOTR and The Hobbit.
So true, why doesn't anyone ever talk about this?!
Gimli: I never thought I'd die fighting side-by-side with an Elf.
Legolas: What about side-by-side with a friend?
Gimli: Aye... I could do that.
You beat me to it!
Still, can’t help but marvel at their friendship and dare I say it, bromance
"Speak friend and enter."
Excellent choice in subject matter ^_^
We could all use friends in these dark times
I absolutely love how the first elves found and befriended the men who awoke, those first encounters and learning from each other was so pure and exactly what Eru meant for his children
For this life is much better lived together 🤝🏼
Finrod's many friendships just tells of the majesty and golden times of the First Age.
Legolas and Gimli is my favorite relationship for sure.
Celegorm and Aredhel were great friends . When Celegorm lived in Valinor, he had a close friendship with Oromë.
Friendship that deserve note: Aragorn and Boromir.
That friendship give us one of the most dramatic scenes on PJ films, the dialogue between the two just before the death of Boromir.
Happy Reading Day, Yoystan! I thank you for your friendship in this Fellowship of Tolkien TH-camrs. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the support you've given my channel!
Great video! Friendship is such a powerful theme to focus on for this years Tolkien Reading Day.
I am very surprised that Turgon's close friendship with Húrin and Huor, even so much as to die so that Turgon would live, was not in this list. "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
“Never thought I’d die fighting side by side with an Elf.”
“What about side by side with a friend?”
“….Aye. I could do that.”
-Legolas & Gimli
That is all.
"Not if we hold true to each other."
To me those words from Aragorn summarize all friendships in the legendarium. The truest friendships were never broken and lasted even beyond the mortal realm to the end of all things
Happy Tolkien Reading day!
And my favourite friendship is probably the friendship between Theoden and Merry although I love all the friendships in Tolkien’s works.
There was also the friendship between Bilbo and the dwarves of Thorin’s company as by the time they reach the mountain their friendship leads the dwarves to believe in Bilbo and his skills even when he did not.
Great video as always Yoystan! The overview especially of Finrod evokes a sense of merriment and tragedy due to his inevitable fate. Always enjoy doing these collaborations with you!
Man, what a lovely video, to cap an Awesome day...Both for in Middle Earth and Reality as my Brother's Birthday!!!
Such a shame, I am the only sibling out my Brothers are with my Tolkien...They are on Holidays...I have to wait 2 weeks!!!
Thanks again for the Best Friendships in Middle Earth, sorry I was late I was preparing for something nearly 10 days from now...Until Tomorrow's LOTRO Stream and the End of the Timeline of Arda Series...Marion Baggins Out!!!
Though they had a falling out,
You may have forgot.
Best friends forever,
Gorbag and Shagrat.
What about Melkor and Ungoliant for friends that fell out?
@@tominiowa2513
They killed the trees
and extinguished their light.
Then, because of some jewelry
they had a big fight.
Thank you for being the LOTR channel that brings in the philosophy and spiritualness of the Tolkien mythos. You remind me why I love this grand story so much and why it is the tale of all tales to me. And you hold true to that value. Thank you so much for your content. Oh and Sam and Frodo get me everytime in my soul with their bond!!
Samwise the Brave. Greatest of all friends. Undying devotion and love for your fellow man. Many of us wish to have a friend like Sam, but we must all try to be more like Sam.
One cannot rate these friendships one above the others, though one stands above all and that is the friendship between Legolas and Gimli who were rewarded by the Valar such that both were allowed to cross the sea to Valinor.
To me, the greatest friendship in LOTR is the missing friendship between the Istari. Two left before anyone else was even there, one was despised by it's leader, and the last spent all his time among the elves, men and hobbits rather than his colleagues. I would have wished to have seen more coordinated, positive interactions between the Istari, the wizards of middle earth.
I honestly feel that Lord of the Rings, and all the other stories can be neatly summarised as "bros being bros, helping bros".
Also, lets not forget the friendship between the bestest boy Huan and Beren and Luthien.
There is a form of friendship when Gondor and Rohan charge together at the Battle at the Black Gate of Mordor. Aragorn's speech and the charge that follows is one of my favorite moments in the LOTR trilogy.
Mine too! 😀
Happy Tolkien Reading Day! I'm sooooo late!! 😁
Happy Tolkien Day Yoystan you absolute legend! So delighted to be finally sharing the platform with you and other amazing TH-camrs! Thank you for being so encouraging and welcoming since day 1!
Great video Yoystan! There are soo many amazing friendships throughout the legendarium. Finrod is definitely one of my favorites as he had so many significant friendships and he was always so loyal. Each of the friendships you mentioned definitely had some kind of impact on the world that Tolkien built whether it’s the Hobbits who pretty much followed each other regardless of the situation to ends of the world. To Legolas and Gimli who at first were adversed to each other and in time grew to appreciate each other’s differences. A few other favorite friendships are Narvi and Celebrimbor, Glorifindel and Ecthelion , and lastly Bilbo and Balin.
My favorite friendships from the entire legendarium of the Middle Earth series are Frodo and Sam & Legolas and Gimli. Also, Happy Tolkien Reading day Yoystan! Your videos has always brought us joy to the channel. 😊
Your knowledge of the legendarium and your ability to impart such so deftly and eloquently is quite a wonderful joy. Thank you for all that you do for the community. You are amazing.
Happy Tolkien Reading Day Yoystan!
Perhaps heightened in the films, but still evident in the books, the friendship between Boromir and Merry and Pippin, I feel, was crucial to the Hobbits' future deeds and especially Pippin's friendship and loyalty to Boromir's brother, Faramir.
Haven't even watched this yet but oh man, what a great idea for a video!!!
Love the quote at the end. It is important to remember these words in the dark times we face here in Eastern Europe at the moment.
On another note: For me, the friendship between Gandalf and Bilbo was always extraordinary. I think that this particular friendship played a large part in keeping Bilbo from becoming corrupted by the ring. And eventually, Gandalf making Bilbo give up the ring was what saved him. This courage, to step up for your friends to do something that is for the moment hurting them but in the long run saves them, is what we need in our friendships :)
I think Tolkien is the master about writing about friendships and Bones with not only characters but also places ,feelings and cultures..he trully had a life filled with all sorts of friendships to be able to write about them so well.
Glad you mentioned Turin and Beleg
Wow. You hit all the ones I had in mind. Especially Beleg and Turin. That one seems to always be overlooked when it comes to the great friendships in Arda. And if I recall, you have a whole video on the friendship of Gimli and Legolas. But I think you missed one. Bilbo and Balin.
I suppose most prefer the ones with happy endings. As Yoystan said the death Beleg was on of the darkest things to happen within Ea.
A great list but Aragorn needed to be on there more for his many great friendship such as with Gandalf, Boromir, Fararamir, Elladan, Elrohir and I am sure there are others. Gandalf was a great friend to Elrond, Galadriel, Círdan, and Thorin Oakenshield to name a few.
I couldn’t sleep and have had a pretty rough day. Your videos always brighten up my day Yoystan. Thank you!
In my opinion, your content best represents Middle Earth and Tolkien's vision in what he would continue to convey to the world. I am 47 yrs. old and has loved J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpieces my entire life. This video, and I will not lie, touched me to the core. The Father of modern Fantasy will live on through his works and through his millions of adopted children who love what he has gifted to us. May Eru Iluvatar and the Valar continue to bless your efforts in keeping this love alive for generations to come.
Túrin Turambar was always my favorite character from Tolkien’s books. Such a tragic yet beautiful story, from his killing of his sword-brother Beleg Strongbow to his unintentional incest with his sister, to his death at the slaying of Glaurung and his own hand, with Gurthang, the “Iron of Death”- to me it exceeds even the Classical Greek tragedies in it’s misfortune. I appreciate you including such a great selection of artwork- I have never before seen a picture of Turin as the Mormegil, and with his mask, no less! I’m currently doing my annual read of The Lord Of The Rings, and am just setting out with Frodo after Bilbo’s birthday departure, so I’m right at the beginning, once again. I really enjoyed this video- thanks for all of your great content.
Happy Tolkien Reading Day! 🙌 So many great friendships, glad you covered so many of them 🙏
I want you to know you uploaded this as I was having a vulnerable and loving conversation with my best friend, the Gandalf to my Bilbo. A beautiful coincidence.
Your channel always focuses so much on the endearing and loving nature of things throughout Tolkien’s works. It’s an awesome thing to see, especially when things seem bleak in the real world. Thanks for all the videos you make!
Happy Tolkien Reading Day Yoystan! You've listed so many friendships that are impossible to decide upon a favourite.
That said I don't think Martin's work is more realistic to Tolkien's not to object too strongly, but Martin's is cynical yes, but the lack of feeling, the total lack of love between all peoples as they all slide towards hatred or bitterness towards one another, is not taking the humanity that is inherently crucial to humans into account (we are pack animals after all). What I mean is that; yes people often give in to hate and anger, but if you look throughout history you'll find tales of mercy and compassion that come from unexpected sources. Yes, there is Henry VIII who slew his wives for example, but you also get Macbethad who spared his political rival & stepson and even adopted him, or Mursili II who spared his stepmother despite her having poisoned the love of his life, or St-Louis's wife crying for her mother-in-law despite how abusive Blanche de Castille was towards her. Then you have all that happened in the 20th century, but you also have beautiful events such as MLK's speeches, Tolkien & Lewis's friendship and acts of love towards people after WWI. Just as there are attendant sorrows to our modern age, but there have likewise been tales of courage, forgiveness and goodness and optimism, and goodliness. Martin's world only show-cases one side of humanity without ever showing the other. Humanity I would argue is not simply purely rotten, but multi-faceted, we can be good and true just as we can be bad. But it appears that Martin doesn't see it this way, and by beginning to concede or claim that he was wiser or is truer to real life/humanity than Tolkien is I think a mistake.
Tyrion inevitably comes to despise Jaime for the whole sordid tale with his wife, every good deed of the Starks does not go unpunished, just as naught but evil befalls the likes of Theon, Jeyne Poole, Robert Baratheon & even the likes of Mycah the blacksmith's boy, just as what little good and loyalty there is in Edmure & Catelyn causes the death of Robb, or the love of Sansa does nothing but bring about death and sorrow as in the case of her father, because Martin despises these traits in them, then you have the growing cruelty in Arya, Sansa and Rickon, the growth of callousness in Bran and Daenerys as the story progresses. There is also the fact that Robert & Eddard bring each other down, because friendships in Westeros are meaningless things that men are better off without, or so it seems to be what Martin thinks (must be sad to think this).
No offence intended; but what could Martin know about true cynicism in comparison to Tolkien who saw the worst humanity had to offer in WWI? Tolkien suffered more than most people in the past 60 years could possibly understand (at least here in the west) and still wrote of beauty, of good and also yes of evil. To an extent he is far more cynical than Martin (whom is more grimdark than anything else).
I do worry that when folks say 'Martin is more realistic than Tolkien', if people are saying they wish for a world where that is the case. That people long for the cruelties and savageries contained in Martin's stories rather than the overcoming of evil and tragedy attendant in the Professor's tales. I'm not saying that Martin's stories all suck, to the contrary I've enjoyed a great many of them, but I think that it is a slight against the good Professor and the darkness contained in his own stories to say Martin is more realistic with his pessimism. And am concerned about folks possibly longing for Martin's tales to become a mirror to our own world, rather than bettering it.
Sorry for the lecture, just this one statement of yours Yoystan bugged me a little. Hahaha, man I got pretty sanctimonious there (apologies), I just have such a passion for Tolkien. Absolutely loved this video and loved the subject of this video! Feel free to debate my points here, didn't mean to bash Westeros too much, as there is plenty of great world-building in it and it does have its well-written corners and parts just as all other fictional universes do.I do hope you don't take my message poorly Yoystan, and apologise if it came across too harshly, as I mean no disrespect and hold you in the utmost regard.
Happy Tolkien Reading Day my friend!! One of the great friendship that can not be forgotten is the one by Dain Ironfoot and king Brand, holding Sauron's power up there on the mountains.
Happy Tolkien Reading Day! Awesome video bro! Live stream was so much fun too!
A bold move, doing a list of major friendships in a legendarium which makes them so common and so commonly important! 😂 Happy Tolkien Reading Day mellon!
😂 it was very hard to narrow them down!
Its great to see how all the tolkien fandom channels are coming together, to celebrate his amazing work. In a world so dividet its great to see some things are coming together. Keep up the good work
Wonderful thoughts, thank you on Tolkien's Reading Day!
You made my Friday perfect yoystan. All my favorite elves and men are mentioned. Thank you for the video. Happy Tolkien Reading Day
Happy Tolkien Reading Day! This was a great video
Happy Tolkien Reading Day! Great job summarizing the pivotal friendships of the mythology!
Thoroughly enjoyed this one! Thanks MotW 🤗🤗
Thr friendship of Deagol and Smeagol before the rng came between them.
Happy Tolkien Reading Day! 💚
Happy Tolkien Reading Day and Destruction of the One Ring Day! And thanks for spreading the word about Save the Children! ❤ Thank you for giving us look at some of the different friendships in the legendarium...I hope you are able to do more videos in the future about all of the different friendships...including one about the friendship between Sam and Bill the Pony! (we can't forget about Bill the Pony!)
Bill the Pony and Fatty Lumpkin?
Really nice topic! love the video and as you said, there's a lot of good friendships. To me, Gimli and Legolas and of course Sam and Frodo are one of my favorites.
Worth to mention the unusual friendship between Smeagol and Shelob :D
Edited: Forgot another one that we know very little about, the two blue wizards, always wonder about their adventures in the far east, sometimes I fantasies about one of them turn to darkness (as Saruman did) and the good one kills the other and never recover from this, and wander the far east for ages.
Nice list Yoystan! I really enjoyed your video. I missed however friendship between Celebrimbor and Narvi.
Thank you, my friend. Ah yes! That's a great one!
Can't wait for the what-if video for what if Gandalf never fell at the Bridge of Khazad-dum and continued with the fellowship to Lothlorien and on forward?
Having someone like Finrod or Samwise as a friend would be more precious than owning a Silmaril... simple as that.
What Morgoth did to Turin/Beleg was heartbreaking indeed..
Also, really enjoyed the friendships between Gandalf and Gwaihir/Treebeard!
Finally, always fun to watch people read the post-ROTK text about Gimli/Legolas and be amazed just how special that friendship was in many ways.
I think the greatest friendship, well a bit more then a friendship, is Beren and Luthien. These did not only help each othe against Morgoth, but also death.
Gimli: I never thought I would die side by side with an elf
Legolas: What about side by side with a friend
Gimli: Aye. I could do that
March 25 bears special significance in Middle-earth's history, as it was the day The One Ring AKA Isildur's Bane AKA The Ring of Power was destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom by Frodo and Sam.
Great video
One should not overlook the friendship of Hamfast Gamgee and his taters.
My favourite is Frodo and Samwise it reminds me of my best friend and myself. She’s always there to carry me when I can’t go on anymore and I for her
What about Thorin and Dain if it wasn’t for their friendship Middle earth the war of the ring would be happening sooner than it did
Imagine a friendship between Turin and Tuor
06:28 oh no, MEME THE DWARF
If you’re a dwarf and your name sounds like meme, we should already know you’re bad news, amirite?
@@MenoftheWest We do some trolling
Fingolfin and Malach Aradan
The thumbnail perfectly reminds me of Dutch and Dillon in Predator, when they meet, slap hands, and Duth says, "DILLON! You son of a bitch! *hand smacks* What's the matter? CIA got you pushing too many pencils??"
No mention of Farmer Maggot and Tom Bombadil?
And the very first friendship in Eä, Manwë and Ulmo.
I'M PERFECT. And humble too :D It's true, have a magic ring that makes me practically perfect in every way. *cheers!
Rather a shame that the Elves could not extend the same helping hand of friendship and love to the Petty-dwarves that they did to Men, instead of slaughtering them for sport.
You forgot to mention the friendship between King Dain II. and the Kings of Dale/heirs of Bard
What about @Tolkienuntangled he has one of the best channels I love his videos very rude you guys didn’t include him!
He’s great! His video is actually included!
@@MenoftheWest oh ok good as you should
When you say, tolkien reading day... Is there a callendar for reading allong with the lord of the rings over let's say a year? I just got the red book edition in english (as ot is not my mother tongue) and perhaps reading it such that the seasons would line up amd getting to the end where the major March events would happen in March, on the date?
Oh that is interesting! I think if you start reading LOTR on September 22nd, Hobbit Day which is Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday, and get through the Battle of the Black Gate today, that would be a pretty good line up. If you look up the timeline of 3018-3019 of the Third Age, you can follow along even closer if you’d like! What a great idea!
My favorite is Aragorn and Legolas
Shelob and sauron.
Frodo and Sam
Theodon and aragorn
Gimli and legolas
Finrod and beor
Thingol and melian
No Sauron and Morgoth? 😎
LOL
Glad you got a chuckle out of it!
Shelob and sauron
Also, can we get "tax policies" as the theme for next year?
What's the name of the song starting at 11:30?
A Sweet Feeling by Camtasia!
Great, thank you
How can Amazon even try to destroy something beutiful and heart warming like this ? Bezos made a deal with melkor no doubt about it..
The Tolkien Society had a part to play in that too. I can't stand that Society anymore. They've strayed from protecting Tolkien's works to pushing their political sjw agenda into it.
So what happens to the current High King of the Noldor when Finwë emerges from the halls of Mandos? Does the kingship revert to him or what?
Finwë agreed to stay in the Halls of Mandos until the end of Arda so Míriel could leave.
I so wish george martin didn't have such a cynical, faithless worldview. He made this amazing universe, with fantastic dialogue and worldbuilding. But all I get while reading it is "there's a tree over there but who cares, it'll probably just fall on someone. There's a woman beneath it having a picnic with her husband, but she's just gonna cheat on him. It's a beautiful day but whatever, someone's dying somewhere, they're probably soiling themselves right now." Like, wowwwww, who hurt you george? Who do you hate so much, others or yourself?
I appreciate that the videos point out this discrepancy. And I could be very wrong but among other things, i think this is partly down to Tolkien being a man of faith, in love with nature and beauty who had faith in man to sometimes, for the right reasons, do something good. He wasn't niaive, he knew we're fallen creatures prone to selfishness, depravity, and downright brutality. But there can't be darkness without light, these things are made worth it for the love a mother bears her child, for the charity of a person adopting a stray dog or donating to a worthy cause, for the ideals that humanity can aspire to. The things we can be, now and then, that transcend our animal instincts and behaviors.
I gave up on game of thrones around book 3, and had given up on the show by around season 7 but watched it all anyway (much to my great disappointment). And yeah, after lotr I feel hopeful and happy and beyond all grateful, whereas after Got I feel depressed and cynical and hopeless. There's enough hopelessness in the world george, and I'm well aware of it. The way to combat the world's evils is to have faith and try my best to do the right thing. Reading game of thrones feels like wallowing and blaming everyone but myself lmao
The Witch king of Angmar and the Ringwraiths. I’m joking! Sorry bad joke
I wouldn't know if westeros is more reallistic. Its just that the perspective the tolkien stories are told from are more altruistic, but they are full of actions of interest and ambition. And I don't mean grima, Maeglin or Saruman. I mean Elrond fostering the descendant of a friendly dinasty as an investment for the future. The establishment of Rohan as a shield against other enemies or the fact thst feanorians may have enslaved men if they had been the first to find them instead of uberchad Finrod (as they hunted petty dwarves). What I mean is that Tolkien stories are told from the perspective of tbe victor and it paints itself in the guise of the good one.
Man I don’t know how I feel about the alignment with Tolkien Society. They’re a bunch of jokers
Yeah, save the orphans.
They're tax-deductible.
Get them while they're still cute.
Get them young, teach them your tongue.
Woody Allen can't marry them all.
Some of them don't even have parents.
Get two, get one free.
Use them as bait for scholarships.
Pippin and second breakfast....
Sam and po-tay-toes
Gollum and precious
