My wife and I combined all finances 20 years ago but recently started doing something a little different that's working great. After we do the monthly budget, any leftover income that we would typically distribute to fun goals such as home projects, travel, etc., instead we split that surplus between the two of us. This gives us our own, personal funds that we can then distribute as we wish, without needing approval from our partner, to any goal we desire. We've been doing this for about three months and our spending has gone down and our financial satisfaction has gone way up. We're starting to clear personal goals that would often sit on the backburner for years while still working towards mutual goals.

Wouldn't a separate account for 'fun' money help keep things even? Have a joint account for necessities, agree to put so much back into retirement or savings and then put a set amount into individual accounts so they know their spouse isn't spending too much on themselves and they don't have to ask each other if it's okay to buy something.

    • @PamWD

I know several couples that do this. They have the major account where everything is deposited. The bills are paid out of that account, and all tithes, savings and investments come from that account as well. And then they each move x-amount of money each month (same for both spouses) to individual accounts for discretionary spending. Everything it built into the budget, including the amount they move to the individual accounts. I do not believe that every couple that wants to do things this way is trying to hide something. That certianly may be true for some people, but it certainly isn't true across the board.

All income is deposited into joint accounts. One joint checking account...pays bills. One joint savings. Separate individual checking accounts. Pay all bills from the joint account and send an 'agreed upon' weekly allowance to each separate checking account. Any additional money needed should be discussed. Transparency is the most important thing.

I have always had a joint account when was married but also at same time she and I both had an individual account. She was a SAHM and relied on 1 income and basically sent the spend money from the joint account to our personal ones for the spend accounts so that we didn't have to try to get a hold of the other as had coworker invite out to eat or she wanted to buy something while out in town etc. She was also not good with the autopay bills and would just check the account that day and see the available balance and say that was how much we had in the account is one the reasons to have individual spend accounts to go along with the main joint account

      ???????
Contributions to retirement accounts made during the term of the marriage,
as well as growth on those contributions, are considered marital assets.
A division of individual retirement accounts (IRAs) can be ordered in a divorce decree or
a property settlement agreement that's been recognized by the court.
Qualified plans such as 401(k)s require a document called
a “qualified domestic relations order” (QDRO) to be divided.
A valid prenuptial or premarital agreement can override state law,
but a spouse can challenge the agreement and potentially get it invalidated.
This is why you SEAL an IRA and make no further contributions,
      to avoid "co-mingling money"

He pays the bills like the rent, electric etc. We are both saving towards a second car. He walks to work and I use the car, but he takes the car for trips to the barbershop and eye appointments etc. I work several part time jobs so a few are always close so he can drop and pick me up to use the car sometimes. I also pay when we take the car in because I have more time so I am walking to and from the shop and picking up the car. He used to offer to give me money to cover things, but I told him I didn't need it. When we buy a second car cash, we will both pitch in for it. We don't have kids. We found each other late in life and I'm nearly menopausal so we likely won't. We do have a cat. We both buy stuff for the cat. Bring on your questions.@@Shortballa11

Like having a thousand dollars discretionary spending, getting into a relationship and suddenly that amount is reduced to seven hundred because the rest gets siphoned off for the other person's whatever. Rule of thumb: Very little in terms of hobbies, clothing etc should change after getting into a relationship. Clothes budget for the year was $1700 before that you could cover? It's $1700 after. The only things that should change is the ability to have a better home, investing in the future etc. in terms of dreams. Everything else shouldn't change unless you start earning more money.
