  • This was a very quick and direct delivery from QSO directly to the Off-Grid Garage 😄 They delivered the brand-new EVE MB30 and MB31 cells for me to test and review. Both LiFePO4 models come with either 306Ah and 10.000 cycles (MB30) or 314Ah and 8000 cycles (MB31).
    While we are charging the MB30 for its first test, we are having a look at the specifications of both cells and, oh boy, have they changed! They are now so detailed and provide information about under and over charge/discharge voltages as well as compression methods and swelling forces. There is a ton of information in these spec sheets.
    The discharge test broke every record and is the best result we ever achieved in the long series of battery testing. Wow, I'm impressed!

    Am I missing something, because 300kg force = an awful lot! = 2942nm....my poor torque gauge doesn't go that far.

      @simongrace2538 หลายเดือนก่อน

      300kgf is surprisingly small actually. I calibrated my clamping arrangement with a device used for testing the clamp on paint tin shakers. I couldn't find a torque wrench sensitive enough

    • @stephantitze8302
      @stephantitze8302 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are mixing the pressure force (300 kg in linear direction) with the torque which you apply at your torque wrench.
      The pressure force which you can achive, depends of the size and type of thread.
      Example:
      M6 nut torqued with 10 Nm produces a tension (pressure force) of 10 kN ! (about 1000 kgf).
      If you torque a M8 nut with the same 10 Nm the tension is only 8 kN.
      This is because of the higer pitch of the M8 (1,25 mm/turn) compared to the M6 (1mm/turn).
      As you can see, one M6 rod would be enough to give easy the force of 300 kgf to the battery pack, but it is a little bit difficult to apply evenly. 😉
      I always wondering why some guys use M16 rods. 😳
      My cells will remain uncompressed, by the way.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stephantitze8302 Thanks a lot for the explanation. That is very interesting. 3Nm and a M6 rod would give us the 300kgf then. EVE has some specific drawings in their spec sheet now, using 6 rods and two wooden or metal plates at each end. Would each nut need to be torqued with 3Nm in this case or is it 1/6 per nut to achieve the 3Nm?
      I guess if you use some foam underneath, it will quite evenly distribute the force?

    • @stephantitze8302
      @stephantitze8302 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Hi Andy, it should be as you mentioned: The sum of all forces, caused by the nuts is equal to the sum of forces in the opposite direction, in this case the 300 kgf of the battery. It is finally the 3. law of motion by Newton.
      Off course from the feeling in the fingertips it seems unbelievable that you have 300 kgf with 6 little nuts tightened just by the force of three fingers.
      The foam makes it erratic to calculate anything, but by just "mechanical feeling" it is the only way to distribute the force somewhat equal to the usually uneven surface of the cells, even if your new cells are exciting good in this mater.
      On the other hand each foam material will settle down under pressure, over a period of time, and the adjusted pressure is lost.
      For cycle testing my EVE 304 cells a few weeks ago I've used a layer of thick soft pond foil to feel better. I've also tested the possible force of my clamps, which are looking similar to yours and could reach the 300 kg hardly with just one of them.
      I will post another comment regarding compression in the evening. Its springtime here in the "fresh", cloudy north of Germany and a lot of things to be done in the garden.

    Last week, I attended a solar exhibition in Turkey and had a fascinating conversation with EVE representatives. They shared that they've adopted a new method of pouring the solution directly into the cell instead of using sheets, which appears to significantly extend its lifespan. Your test results also seem to confirm this, showing increased solution usage and power output. Additionally, they introduced a larger battery model, double the size of the previous one at 280, 560AH, with an optimal capacity exceeding 628AH. It's truly remarkable to witness the rapid pace of innovation within EVE and other brands in the industry.

      Only necessary on the first 1-2 charges to get micro bubbles out of the layers. A german youtuber (zerobrain) interviewed an an LiFePo expert working for a manufacturer and he explaind all that over 2 hours long.
      Must be upright for those first 1-2 charge cycles. Brings 4000-6000 cycles up to 8000 cycles if done.
      He also described the lower charge speed at low temperatures and there is no hard limit, but a curve. You can also charge at -5 celsius but at a very low P-rate.

    I love the smell of LiFePO4 in the morning! Good they did not drop napalm - but would not matter, i suspect there are no waves where you live ;).
    Thx for testing.
    Just had a look at the datasheet before watching your video - 10k cycles come with a price of eeeerrrm 0.5p :). The question is: does that apply for all the cells in total (so 489,6 Watts) or does the power sum up for a 16s system giving 7833,6 Watts (153A) 🥳. So max charge/discharge reduced to 0.5p instead of 1C for the LF280K. If the MB30 gets MUCH cheaper (there are rumors stating 1kWh might sell at about 40 EUR in June), maybe it will be a good thing, so you can distribute the needed system power (my 3 MP2 5000 will roughly take 15kW) to more batteries for the same price with higher capacity.
    Anyway also had a look at the EVE LF280K V3 datasheet - they already introduced the "p"-rating there and also te 70% SOH, ending up with 8k cycles, also using 0.5p for charging. So we win about 2k cycles by loosing max. 1P allowed charge/discharge rate. Quite a tradeoff ^^. And the 2.0V < 0°C was also introduced there, also the the temperature dependency of max charging power and also SOC dependency of charging power (but that is not present in the MB30 datasheet) - NUTS. Swelling force also got introduced with EVE LF280K V3 datasheet.
    Just ordered "Stage 1" for my home battery storage - 48 LF280K cells. Next stage might be MB30 cells, if they are available at NKON in the Netherlands later this year. From a customer perspective we are living in a golden era of battery storage at the moment ;). Improved cheaper LiFePO4 cells - what more do we wish for? No need for sodium cells ;).

      Thanks for your comment and thoughts.
      I think so too, these LFP cells will stay for a very long time. Sodium may catch up a bit, but such performance is very hard to beat, even with improved sodium chemistry.
      Yeah, prices will get even lower, they are saying. More and more production lines are coming online in China.

    Another great video! Thank you for being you. Not like I need more batteries....but....but...but...1KW per cell.... This pushes the rating to over 16KW for a 48V battery. Yes only 2KW but still. At what point do we consider replacing our cells? Or do we wait for the 6K cycle and then start to look around?

    Andy, you are my hero, I have your photo on my computer screen! 😅Just got 16 new EVE, but I have 24V inverter, so I'll do 8+8 in parallel. I already have a JK BMS, the black one, but if I get another one like this, are they parallelable? Or do I need two other BMS suitable for this purpose? And if I just leave them each on their own, is that a problem? Can you suggest how to set up this system?

    I'll say it again, these type of terminals are not compliant with what Eve requires to be within specifications. Anything larger than 280Ah need to be laser welded together. For what you are doing this should be fine, but it is good to know when you are outside the manufacturer's specifications. Thanks again for another great video!

    @Andy did you ever had problems with different cable length? I have two additional battery packs connected to my system and when I connect them to my other self built batteries which are closer to the Victron they don't discharge, I guess due to cable length (approx.5m)😮 when they are connected alone, they work without problems

    yeah, by the way .... ;-) I guess what you never tried yet (or at least we don't know) is testing discharging a battery with a constant power instead of constant current:) using the same ZKE tester, it's possible! Try with your old "test cell" 100ah :) that would be very interesting comparing that discharge curve vs "constant current" discharge curve.

    It would be interesting to see a constant 3.45V charge curve. Given the low internal resistance they should be identical up to 98% charge. For a 16S sysytem, a charge voltage of 55.2V should be all you need until your input power is over 8kW. I'd love to see a test on a 16S battery as well.

    8k cycles ti to 70% cap. That's 21.917* years. The electrolyte will probably dry out by then! If you have a cold issue build a foam insulation box. to cover the cells. Get a oil pan heater, that sticks on The oil pan. Stick it to a heat sink near the size of the cell . Use a thermal switch between 20°- 40°c, with a relay set up to turn on below 0° and off at ,20-40° at most. Id like to get four of these for my little inverter, to power a bedroom and/or living room, big enough to power tv, lights, modem, routers, and more at once! With built in charge controller, i have generators and a large inverter for larger loads. This is basically a backup system. Got it at a really good price. Im thinking about mounting a 100amp alternator to my riding mower, to charge batteries in an emergency, possibly set it up for propane and gasoline, maybe mount a 100 ah battery on it and 60 amp DC to DC charger , and a really quiet exhaust. Im case the sun can't charge the battery!
