  • UPDATE: We have updated this recipe in an updated video • Gidget's Gourmet Homem...
We have been making this fresh & healthy dog food for our dogs for 7 years and finally got around to making a video so we could share it with others looking for a healthy alternative for their dogs.
Dog food (This makes about 28lbs)
5lbs Ground turkey or ground beef (more fat)
Can chicken 6/12.5 oz cans 4.69 lbs
    Carrots 3 lbs
    Broccoli 2.5 lbs
    Sweet Potatoes 5 lbs
    Frozen peas 2.5 lbs
    Brown rice 8 cups
    Whole raw Eggs 1 dozen
I get my ingredients from Sam’s Club. All but the peas and eggs. The total cost is about $40
    Cook rice
Chop or use a food processor for the following:
    Carrots
    Broccoli
Sweet potatoes (leaving the skin on)
Mix together the ground turkey, carrots, broccoli, & sweet potatoes
Using a blender blend all dozen eggs, then pour over the mixture
    Cook on 350* 1 hr -1 1/2 hrs
Once you take it out of the oven mix in the chicken and rice.
    Allow cooling for 10 minutes
    then add frozen peas.
Put in freezer containers and freeze
1 container should contain a week or less worth of food.
I use a 4 cup container for my two dogs.
This is a link to the multivitamin powder that I use:
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08...
Let me know if you have any questions.

A good recipe but I would add organ meats and muscle meat - liver, heart and gizzards. Thanks for sharing!

I add beef, turkey or pork and livers or gizzards. My dogs do not tolerate chicken. I also use brocolli, carrots cauliflower and greenbeans for veggies, they do not digest peas well. I mix brown and white rice and add some turmeric. I also cook mine in the instant pot but I do not do 28 lbs so I can see why the oven is better.

Thank YOU so much for taking the time to explain this to me. I really appreciate this.
The Instant pot idea is a great idea too...
I have a slow cooker, do you think that will work too?

@@judichristopher4604 I have never used a slow cooker. I put in my ingredients, add water or broth and it is done in 8 minutes. Once it is done, I do a manual release, add the rice and organ meat because I precook the liver and let it sit covered for 10 minutes to cook the rice. It is so easy! Get an Instantpot, they are fantastic and save so much time.

Hey, I started using this as a base for my dog's food about a year ago. I've added things a long they way, I use ground chicken instead of canned, I added 2lbs of 97/3 ground beef, and 2 lbs of ground pork. I also added cauliflower, brussels sprouts, spinach and sunflower oil. But what I found in my research, is that sweet potato skins and bad for dogs, they find them difficult to digest them, so I started skinning them. And I cook the rice (brown long grain) in bone broth. And since no dog food is perfectly balanced, I added a multivitamin. to her dinner meal.
She's 10 now, and I have found that since I started feeding her this alternate version of yours is that she has a lot more energy, seems happier and is NEVER bored of her food. She loves it, and we are happier that she seems a lot ore healthy. So thanks, and don't forget to peel those sweet potatoes.

I tried the Farmer's Dog food only once until I realized it was hard on our budget and the dry ice was long gone by the time I got home from work to get the box out of the heat.😒
      Our dog really liked it.
Vet recommended Honest Kitchen freeze dried food but the 4# box price went through the roof. Had to nix that food.
Our dog really liked that food too.

@@cynthiahodder6238 Of course. I used to make beef, chicken, lamb or fish. Just depended what was on sale when it was time to make a new batch. Mt dog was a blue Heeler and she wasn't a fussy eater. You may have to try different protiens and veg until you find a recipe your dog likes. Maybe make small batches until you hit a winner. I used to mix up the veg as well to keep it interesting. The other thing is to make home made bone broth and let it cook slowly for a full day or two until you get a jelly consistency. this is great for dog's joints.

Typically dogs and cats should have 80% meat products and 20% veggies, I switch it up seasonally with the veggies and I always add 2 freshly grated apples (no seeds) thank you so much for the video!!

But she would not stop hovering around us during the preparation process, and when she finally got a serving, LOOK OUT! She absolutely loved it. Will be fine tuning the serving sizes and supplements with our vet, but this is a welcome foundation for our dog's health. Many, many thanks!

I don't understand why rice is being used in so many dog recipes... it's not good and has no place in their diet. Vegetables should always be emulsified/ pureed. They can't break down the cell wall. So we need to do it for them. Should be 80 % muscle meat and then organ meat and the rest is pureed greens, cucumber dandelion greens lettuce, zucchini etc. I give pureed fruit for a snack. With animal essentials seaweed calcium supplement recommended by my holistic vet

I make something similar for my diabetic dog. I worked it all out on a spreadsheet, with nutritional values, calories, fat, carbs, etc, and my vet approved. She gave me a chart from a textbook showing what they need, which I tried to recreate in my recipe. I cook it in my big turkey roaster. My dog needs more calories because he lost a lot of weight, so mine includes lean beef, turkey and pork, all cooked, boiled and rinsed to remove as much fat as possible. It also includes a lot of frozen vegetables and dried beans, brown rice, barley, oatmeal, and whole wheat pasta. Your dog might need different stuff, but that’s what is working for ours. He had stopped eating completely, so we were desperate. He really loves this stuff though.

Circling back in case others were wondering about trying the recipe. I made this (substitutions included ground chuck, squash and zucchini for the broccoli) and added some blueberries because that’s what I had on hand. This was so incredibly easy to prepare. A food processor is a must to speed things along, but otherwise amazingly quick. My sons dog is also here for a bit while he travels and has never eaten homemade. Both dogs loved it, they are excited to eat and neither had any tummy issues. Each are 65 or so pounds, having it in bulk was super convenient. Thanks again for sharing. For those who are uncomfortable, perhaps cut it in half. I will be using this staple and balanced recipe going forward. : )

@Liz Firrigno I feed 2 cups twice a day. I alternate the meats as well, using grass fed turkey, chicken and always include red meats and fish when I can find low sodium. He loves sweet potatoes and pumpkin, you can add apples and greens. I do use the supplements suggested here, flax, and cod oil. I try to stay ahead with ample in the freezer. I use Royal Canine for labs and twice a week I reduce to a cup and a half of homemade and add a cup of dry. My vet offered very little guidance, mentioning he is at ideal weight, healthy coat, teeth, etc. I never thought I would make my dogs food, but with the recalls and nonsense with the pet foods, I feel this is a better option.

@@kathleenrayner1234 they state several reasons. Commercial pet foods are using peas, Legumes and potatoes as fillers in place of the grains previously used when they went to grain free foods. Peas should not be given to dogs with kidney problems. High pea and legume in diets interacts negatively with taurine which is very important in their diet. Google about peas and find out more details. The FDA has connected grain free diets to DCM.
