I was born and raised in Taiwan and I have been living in US for 16 years, which is the major part of my adulthood. My observation is that America is a country where a small bunch of extremely smart people carry a lot of idiots to move forward.

And this is what puts America ahead of others, its ability to attract and make good use of real smart people.

I’m learning English in school since seven years now and I’m almost fluent (tho that’s also because of the internet). P.S. It's not about dumbness. It's about lack of decent education, and I'd say mostly lack of motivation to self-educate. Never met an American in real life, but from what I've seen on the internet, they are incredibly smart. I'm a teacher in Canada, and I've compared the education curriculums. American grade 12 is equivalent to Canadian grade 4. In Italian schools you can choose to study Latin and ancient Greek, English and French, Spanish, German or Russian. Our program is multidisciplinary, especially at the cultural/historical level. We know other countries well, because they basically came into existence after the fall of our empire. "All roads lead to Rome."

I emigrated from the USA to the UK back in ’98 and became a naturalised UK citizen in 2004. I only visit the USA every few years now. Each time I do, I see more businesses and houses boarded up and American looking shabbier and, of course, fatter. P.S. It's not about dumbness. It's about lack of decent education, and I'd say mostly lack of motivation to self-educate. There's really no excuse in our current world to not have basic knowledge when information is so widely available. All that being said, these Americans were at least much better educated than the average ones I've met. I have daily contact with Americans and I've never ceased to be amazed at how much they don't know. I mean I know much more about not only the world but even about their country than they do. Never met an American in real life, but from what I've seen on the internet, they are incredibly smart. That being said, I think the top 1% of Americans will be “smarter” than the top 1% of any other country because the US undoubtedly has some of the best universities on earth where some of the greatest minds congregate and teach (Harvard, MIT, Caltech, Princeton, etc.) also US allows some of the brightest minds on earth to come over and become US citizens, thus causing braindrain in other regions of the world while simultaneously expanding the 1%. That being said, “smartness” is a hard concept to define. I think what matters more are results, and US is literally the forefront of revolutionary tech, medicine, and research. I’ve always said, the US undoubtedly has some of the smartest ppl on earth, but the bottom 50% are unbelievable dumb (I’m an American I’ve witnessed it lol)

I'm a teacher in Canada, and I've compared the education curriculums. American grade 12 is equivalent to Canadian grade 4. It certainly explains why the Americans I met in university all had nervous breakdowns and dropped out. And why Canadians who have gone to American universities say they just re did what they did in middle school.

I emigrated from the USA to the UK back in ’98 and became a naturalised UK citizen in 2004. I only visit the USA every few years now. Each time I do, I see more businesses and houses boarded up and American looking shabbier and, of course, fatter. Americans like to think that they live in the best country in the world when in fact they live in one of the worst countries in the world: lousy healthcare system, low pay, virtually no employee benefits, etc..
