@TheChessViking This game was actually more interesting compared to the repetitive opening I'm talking about. And I'm not really trying to change anyone's minds about how/if they should be punished, I'm just saying my two cents
@@myles5868it truly doesn’t. Everyone saying this is “making a mockery of the game” is being so damn silly. If the result is exactly the same and already agreed upon, the moves literally don’t matter.
Bcz in those Berlin draws both players are making the best moves in those positions, they always have the choice to deviate from the position but deviating doesn't give them any real advantage whereas here both the players are making objectively bad moves on purpose. The players here had the choice to deviate from this knight dance and have a real advantage in the game. For example position is -1.3 in black's favor according to stockfish after white's 2nd move. If you're replying with a blunder in response to a blunder from your oppostion on purpose then that's the very definition of match fixing.
This theoretical masterpiece is the latest engine inspired novelty. It is known as the "Knight-Cloud" opening. It gives both players excellent drawing chances.

RIDICULOUS for FIDE's self-important arbiter to forfeit this match. Draw by agreement can be reached by any move and move order, no consistency and credibility over their ruling.
Nah, not imo. Normally there is plausible deniability. Plus in a Berlin or something u r never worse, u reach draw by playing the best moves. It's different in this case since u have to play bad moves to reach draw. If one player wants he can try to play for win. Do only reason it's a draw is cause it's pre- arranged. Which is definitely a bad look.. And if allowed gives countries like India and Russia with lot of top players a big advantage as they can fix many games. Even if Dubov Ian wanted a draw they could have been smarter about it. This is definitely gonna be punish. Leko even predicted this live in the commentary since this has happened before too.
@@kunalsingh4418 being smarter about making a draw doesn't make the result any different. Imo it is not about the moves and how good or bad they are as the draw by agreement option exists based on the "agreement" part. Any draw can be fixed because you just need the opponent to agree. That's why this ruling is inconsistent and not credible - there's never a definition on how an agreement can be reached so what is an arbiter to determine if one draw is fine and the other one is not. There have also been more than a handful of less than 5 move draws on the top 10 board across all sections, again it is just one of the many choices players can make.

Making a draw on move 3 is possible. Drawing in Berlin Qe4-Qd4 is possible. It is possible to play fixed matches with Ding Liren and Firouzja in order to qualify for the Candidates Tournament. You can't play by the rules, but make moves with your knights alone. Look, don't get confused. The judge, of course, is an idiot - to take away half a point from the leaders, who will still find a way to do it. I hope he will never referee chess tournaments again, especially at a level for which he obviously does not correspond. I hope Nepomniachtchi and Dubov will win their appeal.

I feel so bad that the ref gave them both 0 points. Magnus had 16 points (and won the championship) but Dubov had 15.5 meaning if the ref gave him a point for a draw, he could’ve won the championship.
They should change rules of chess to be 2 points for win and 1/2 for draw. It would make more interesting games and more people would need win to win. Today there are a lot of draws where draws benefit. In soccer with 1 and 3 points - draw is more a loss than in chess.
They both got zero points not because of of pre planned draw but for violating one important chess principle. The arbitrator punished them for violating the fundamental rule of chess. Never move the same piece twice consecutively. But here they dared to do that. Arbitar got mad

Magnus won the blitz championship with 16 in clear 1st. Dubov got 2nd place with 15.5 points. So if Dubov didn't pull this complete nonsense with Ian, and instead went for a Berlin draw or any other 3-fold repetition draw, Dubov will also have 16 points, tie with Magnus' 16 points. And what makes it even better is Dubov actually has a better tiebreaker 1 (TB1) score than Magnus, so Dubov would have won the blitz championship. Forever known as 'The Dance Of The Knights' 😂
They were horsing around 😎
Nepo tweeted a video of Prokofiev's 'Dance of the Knights' after the FIDE docked points, hilarious!
I dont see how this is any different than the one opening that leads to the queens dancing for draw by repetition
This isn't chess, the repetitions are actually logical chess moves even if they are boring. What they did in this one is just travesty, making a mockery of the game. 0-0 might not be enough punishment!
@TheChessViking This game was actually more interesting compared to the repetitive opening I'm talking about. I get how uptight, conservative type traditional players/chess enjoyers see this game as an insult to chess, but the way I see it is, a draw is a draw, and that's how they should have treated it. And I'm not really trying to change anyone's minds about how/if they should be punished, I'm just saying my two cents
@@TheChessViking They both result in the same thing though? In both situations a draw is already decided, so why does it matter how they go about it?
Big props to Dubov forcing Nepo off his preparation and into a new line
This theoretical masterpiece is the latest engine inspired novelty. It is known as the "Knight-Cloud" opening. It gives both players excellent drawing chances.
Good to see the friendship over rivalry

"Dont make too many pawn moves in the opening"
They took it seriously
I'm not sure exactly for FIDE, but i believe a draw cannot be agreed until move 10 or something like that
@@Shadowboost in classical there's a certain amount of move required but not for rapid and blitz. Many 3-5 move draws have been seen in top 10 board in this tourney across all sections, when it is allowed it is simply a tournament strategy that anyone can utilize.
The chessbrah vid talks a bit about how the forfeit was basically FIDE or the arbiter feeling mocked by the play or the attitude here(?). It does kind of confirm that the decision was mainly based on subjectivity rather than some actual rules.

This game broke the record of rating from Fide in a single game with 5000 and also introduced a new opening ..The Dubov's just horses Opening . And Nepo without reaction , asking for a draw ! Intense ...!
I feel so bad that the ref gave them both 0 points. Magnus had 16 points (and won the championship) but Dubov had 15.5 meaning if the ref gave him a point for a draw, he could’ve won the championship.
No
Nope. He would have to fight Magnus for the final.
How did you get access to sound to these videos?
Beautifully perfect.
Fide are soulless clowns, or worse, for docking them both 0.5 points
They should change rules of chess to be 2 points for win and 1/2 for draw. It would make more interesting games and more people would need win to win. Today there are a lot of draws where draws benefit. In soccer with 1 and 3 points - draw is more a loss than in chess.
Both lost their 0.5 points because of this stupidity
Reti opening, nepo-dubov variation
This is what I like about most of the top chess players these days: They all have a sense of humor and seem to get along quite well.
They both got zero points not because of of pre planned draw but for violating one important chess principle. The arbitrator punished them for violating the fundamental rule of chess. Never move the same piece twice consecutively. But here they dared to do that. Arbitar got mad
All this proves is that Dubov and Nepo have a great sense of humour 😂😂😂

@@Bruh-bk6yo it's not a coincidence. Magnus played a bongcloud and Hikaru laughed and decided to do the same. What does that have to do with pre arranging a result?
Can someone tell me the background of this game?
Magnus won the blitz championship with 16 in clear 1st. Dubov got 2nd place with 15.5 points. So if Dubov didn't pull this complete nonsense with Ian, and instead went for a Berlin draw or any other 3-fold repetition draw, Dubov will also have 16 points, tie with Magnus' 16 points. And what makes it even better is Dubov actually has a better tiebreaker 1 (TB1) score than Magnus, so Dubov would have won the blitz championship. But he pulled this stuff with Ian and robbed himself of being a WC, who's there to blame?
I have to agree with you. They would have to make a better draw instead of this silly knight dance.
pretty sure dubov doesn't care since he agreed to do this as a protest. also, what constitutes a "correct" way to draw? why is this method less valid than others?
Imagine: one wrong move and you cannot return your knight to original position.
Respect for both players.
You can get back since knights can't make a triangulation
