1:31 The LEDs are not only good for safety and to stop a dosing cat getting stepped on, but it could be a good light source just in case you needed to go down/up - stairs at night, because it is a dim light and you wouldn't have to turn on the main lights and get blinded.
My Taz had the same setup. He didn't come home one day, and I haven't seen him since. That was back in March. I haven't given up hope yet though, and I'm glad Ralph made it back home.
Had the same problem with my Luna. He disappeared one day and didn't come home for 2 sleepless weeks. Then we spotted him at a neighbours. I had put up signs and was literally outside every night. I also had set up food and for about a week was feeding the local racoons because when I saw the empty dishes I thought it was him. After spotting him I spent the next week walking to the house he had been around and back to mine literally every hour so I could lay down a trail of scent and sound for him to follow home. Which he did. But yes for a whole week and even during the night I made that walk and my little man came home to me. He wouldn't leave my side after that for almost a month. Every time he couldn't see me he got anxiety and would meow loudly till we were together again. I miss him so much. I'm glad Ralph came home!
A nice tip for the fence: put a 45 degree angle of screen at the top of the wooden fence. Angle it toward the garden and if the cat tries at all to climb up they run into the angle and it confuses them.
I'm glad I watched the follow-up to this video first...This was positively frightening for a cat-lover !! Good on you for doing all the right and proper things before letting them outside. Love your videos always, so creative and entertaining.
My sister's cat was an outdoor cat, but once he almost got taken by an eagle, but thankfully she stopped the bird before her cat Smokey got taken, since then she has had to keep him in because we get a lot of big birds in the area
quick tip to keep the cats in your yard: cats don't like jumping or climbing if there is something over their head. so if you had an extension that sticks out at about a 45° angle, they usually wont even make the attempt. I forget who makes them, but there are some that attach with some type of spring or quick release latch so if your cat decides to try the extension will "drop" immediately. (drop is not the correct word. but I can't think of the right word. the fence attachment/extension is a lot safer then what I'm describing.)
In Australia a lot of councils are setting up cat curfews due to the massive threat to native wildlife. They sort of encourage you to use large outdoor cage setups
good, should do the same here. Cats have just about exterminated everything smaller than a fox or cormorant here. Make it the law that cats found outside are caught and the owner given a hefty fine.

Macquarie Island decided to exterminate all the cats there because they were killing sea birds. What happened? The rat population (also not native) exploded killing not only sea birds but chicks and taking eggs and the rabbits (again non-native) denuded the island's vegetation costing them millions to rectify.

I got recommended this and I wasn’t disappointed, here’s a little story of my black Siamese mix called Oscar. He was very angry as a kitten and upset from hopping home to home so much so he’d throw himself on the scratching post and toys and almost hurt himself, he of course knew we weren’t gonna take him away and so he ended up becoming the most loving and caring cat you could ever imagine, absolutely full of character. He was known to get hurt or sick often which was bad for us but we never gave up on him. Nearly 3 years ago it was late at night and he wanted to go out so my father let him outside, we never saw him again. This cat was special, he’d chase and play fetch with sticks in the garden and his only goal would be to lay with you and cuddle you outside, he also knew how to open doors and would claw at your feet in the mornings to let you know he was hungry. It was like losing a part of yourself and family, so for Oscar wether he may roam. I love you buddy. Remember to hold your cats a little tighter and give them all they deserve, cause sometimes unfortunate things happen and id give anything to hear his meow fill our kitchen again.
My cat Nemo went missing back in June 2019. It was not like him to just disappear like that. Generally, Nemo stayed in the back yard. Nemo has a bad left eye and does not see very well too. We call it his luck eye. So when Nemo disappeared, naturally, we went looking for him. We made finding Nemo a priority for weeks. We gave up thinking the local coyotes got him. Until one day. In mid August a neighbor posted on our community app that they found a cat that looked like our lost Nemo. My daughter and I rushed to the house a quarter mile away to find our wayward cat Nemo. So we found our Nemo cat. He acts like he never left home for two months. The little creep! We keep a close watch on him now. We don’t want to go finding Nemo again. Thinking about making a movie about it. Oh, Wait.

A cat Who cannot drive like Toonces, smoke, gamble, Drink martini’s (shaken not stirred), scuba dive (I think), can’t carry a Walther PPK, or wear a Rolex Watch. Never seen him sky dive, command a ship or fly a plane but maybe he can. Pretty much he is just a strippity-strippidy goofball with a lucky eye.

When we got our cats from the shelter we had to sign a promise that we will never let them go outside. It was the primary condition of their adoption. I do open a window with screen so they can enjoy the sights and sounds and smells. No fleas or ticks and they are quite content.
I couldn't do this my old cat had free reigns over our apartment balcony and occasionally went outside with a collar but the possibility of her going missing or getting hurt was too much for me
it is to easy for them to climb over that fence, at the top of the femce there should be a part leaning inward at an angle, I think 45 dg is right but look it up, that prevents them getting out of the garden
Wow, completely different from how my cat first reacted. He did a slow circle around the entire house, sniffing everything and then went bonkers and ran around for like 10 minutes straight before collapsing under our porch, literally panting.
I remember multiple times when I would look outside and see either two or four yellow eyes staring back at me through the sliding glass door. Sometimes I could even see their little paws against the glass before I let them in. I might miss them, but this channel reminds me of them, so I can remember them despite memory problems. One time, Talyn stayed away for two days straight and then we found our little scaredy cat, in a tree. He couldn't get down but we managed to get the ladder and rescue our boy.
my cat is one of those cats where she doesn't actually catch birds and mice but we put a bell collar on her at one point anyways and she hated it so much she retaliated and would always catch birds and mice until we no longer put collars on her.
We put my cats on leads for there first time outside. 2 of them are black and I love the idea of LEDS on the stairs. They're kinda stupid and sit in the middle of the road until the car is 1 foot away and then moves. Luckily its only a small road though. 🐈⬛🐈⬛

She is allowed out when she wants, but she comes in at night and I get super worried when she doesn't come when I call. We live in the country, so there are plenty of animals who would love to prey on a cat. Your worries are understood!
But bells can make cats get anxious too. Not every cat but it is possible that a cat will get anxious because of the bells. (And with time cats learn to move without making noises with the bells - at least if you have smart cats) But except that I really like the way you make it as save as possible (and if your casts don't mind the bells I am fine with that too)
