- This legendary gospel group was founded in 1954 under the leadership of Billy Mahlalela at the Bethel College in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, where the members were also all members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They specialized in singing hymns and other spiritual songs in English, as well as of course in Zulu, and in a few occasions also in Sotho. Most of the songs were taken from the Hymn Book Of The African People, published at the time by the Church Of Christ Our Saviour. They managed to sing perfect notes and harmonize brilliantly, and that without any musical accompaniment. The four founding members were Billy Mahlalela (baritone & sometimes tenor), Washington Sixolo (bass), Palmer Paul Kote (2nd tenor) and Norman Dube (1st tenor). Sixolo's incredibly strong bass vocals were one of the very big reasons why the group was quickly popular here, and abroad, and achieved a lot of success. There were several 78-speed records released at the time, and these songs along with other new recordings were later collected on eight LP's.
This special song, "No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus", was originally released by them in 1964 on their His Master's Voice album "More Songs With The Kings Messengers Quartet". The LP was reissued in 1972 by Number One Records. The song was composed by the American evangelist Charles Frederick Weigle.
