    About the concert
In an exceptional concert from Brazil, the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo proves its position as the most important orchestra in Latin America. Conducted by charismatic Maestro John Neschling since 1997, the orchestra is defined by its emblematic interpretations of Latin American music.
With "São Paulo Samba", the orchestra grips the listener with an electrifying selection of Brazilian and Latin American classics, including works by Heitor Villa-Lobos, João Bosco, Astor Piazzolla, Francisco Mignone, Alberto Ginastera, Mozart Camargo Guarnieri and Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez. The Banda Mantiqueira and singer Mônica Salmaso complement the show.

How can anyone hear this hot-blooded music and not consider Villa-Lobos an important 20th-century composer? In this piece he's very clever - in the first half the music ideas are presented rather randomly, as in a twilight landscape with sounds carrying in the still, cool air. And then with the faster tempo, everything falls into place, with the borrowed melody (by Anacleto de Mediros) setting borrowed poetry (by Catulo da Paixão Cearense). I speak no Portuguese at all, so the version without sung words works just fine for me. I am incredibly happy to have purchased the boxed set of complete Chôros and Bachinanas Brasileiras compositions, many featuring Maestro Neschling, on the BIS label. Most of these I had never heard before, e.g., the Chôros #11 for piano and orchestra, essentially a very free, continuous concerto that runs over an hour and that fascinates me by apparently never repeating anything. Check it out, music lovers!

I'm brazilian. And there's no portuguese in this song. It's a native language. Even the brazilian don't know what the sung words mean.

Well, yes, native language to start, but the Portuguese text I was referring to is the one that starts at 8:57. This is what Wikipedia says: "In the second half of the work, Villa-Lobos introduces a popular melody, originally a schottische called Yára, written by Anacleto de Medeiros. In a slower tempo, sung to a poem written by Villa-Lobos's friend and former fellow chorão, Catulo da Paixão Cearense, it had become a popular song, "Rasga o coração" (Rend the Heart). It was in this form that Villa-Lobos used both the melody and the words, and he used the song's title as a subtitle for the Chôros, together with an acknowledgement, "D'après la poésie de Catullo Cearence" [sic]. The poet attended the 1926 premiere of Chôros No. 10 in the Teatro Lírico, and was overcome with emotion, embracing the composer in a gesture of gratitude. Unfortunately, in a moment of financial distress, Catulo had sold the rights of all his literary works to a man named Guimarães Martins, who evidently remained ignorant of Villa-Lobos's use of the text for nearly thirty years until by chance, at a demonstration of new gramophone players at the Ministry of Education in Rio de Janeiro, a recording of the work was used as an example. Martins initiated a breach of copyright action against Villa-Lobos, which was finally resolved only in 1956-in the composer's favor. Nevertheless, the performance of the work Villa-Lobos recorded in Paris in May 1957 substituted neutral syllables for Catulo's text, and when the publisher Max Eschig reissued the score in 1975, the text was likewise removed. Most performances since then, however, have restored the words of Catulo's poem."

      What's the problem with repetitions?

    • @Mezzotenor

Nothing, and in fact, repetition is essential to many time-honored musical forms like sonata-allegro, rondo, or pieces that fit the A-B-A structural model. What I meant to express about Choros #11 is that the composer didn't rely on rote recapitulation to add to the work's breadth.

Voltei 36 anos no tempo...

The very first half of these piece is very imaginative and heavy on motives to follow and it's fun to listen to. But the second half with the folk song has no business GROOVIN' the way it does! It's It's almost impossible to do nod your head and literally dance to it. Amazing playing live just is it was in the BIS recording! Bravo to all involved and really hope this gains more traction~

Pelas espinhosas florações do meu sofrer
    Ouviu brandamente, docemente a palpitar
Casto e purpural num treno vesperal
Mais puro que uma cândida vestal
Rasga o que hás de ver
Lá dentro a dor a soluçar
    Anjos a cantar
    Preces divinais
Deus a ritmar seus pobres ais
