    Wow, that was very interesting! I always wondered what the difference was. I also like that option to run a sprocket on the front wheel of the Pugsly! Thanks for the video EEW :-)

    About 4 years ago or so, Surly re-introduced the Pugsley at $899 complete. Decided to wait and been kicking myself since. Still would love to own this bike.

    I have a 2014 Olive/Army Green Special OPS Pugsly & I LOVE IT. I bought it off a real good buddy. I did a metric century on. Took it on a few bike packing trips. I ride it everywhere.

    • @ElevationEveryWeekend
      @ElevationEveryWeekend  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, we have that same bike too and it’s great, a definite long-term keeper! I have a few vids with it on the channel. I put some Moloko bars on it and Edna tires.

    • @williamlebron9873
      @williamlebron9873 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ElevationEveryWeekend it even has matching cooler green rims on it. I get a lot of great compliments on it. When I got it was already a one by. I did put carbon Whiskey bars, seat post & a Whiskey 100mm stem on it.

      @ElevationEveryWeekend  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@williamlebron9873 Yep those green wheels are cool, and are wider than what came on the stock (black) Pugs. We still have the stock 2x10 SLX drivetrain on ours, it’s a nice upgrade over the 2x9 Deore on the black bike, brakes are better too. Don’t ever sell it!

    Question for you, sir. There are dirt and gravel trails about 10 miles from my house, but I kind of feel bad riding Bud and Lou over the paved city trails to get to them. Do you think subjecting the tires to paved surfaces regularly is a bad idea? Will it rapidly increase tread wear? I hate stuffing the Truck into an SUV, and can't afford a rack right now. (How ironic to worry about the easiest road surface in the world when discussing fat tires). Incidentally, I like the idea of riding these around town to get in shape.

    • @ElevationEveryWeekend
      @ElevationEveryWeekend  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aaron Mack Hi Aaron! I have hundreds of miles on my Bud and Lou on hard pack dirt surfaces, they are showing very little wear so far. I don’t ride them much on pavement, but wouldn’t be concerned about it from a wear standpoint. They aren’t the most efficient tires on hard flat surfaces, but are so good for their intended purposes I wouldn’t think twice about it. I do recommend setting them up tubeless to cut weight. Planning to do a tire head-to-head soon and will dive deep into all of these aspects! Thanks for stopping by!

    • @joew7882
      @joew7882 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also have extensive use with my bud/Lou setup on all kinds of surfaces, and I have not experienced much tread wear at all. I use my fat bike for everything and have hundreds of miles on pavement, gravel, rocky trails, mud, you name it. Those tires hold up great.

    Which model Surly replaced the Pugsly?
    New subscriber,
    Love it

    • @ElevationEveryWeekend
      @ElevationEveryWeekend  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, much appreciated!! Actually they didn’t replace with anything new, they had the Pugs, the ICT and the Wednesday together for a few years and just cut the Pugs in 2020. Just my opinion, but I feel like it will be coming back after a hiatus! Great bikes, still ride mine all the time!

  • @DirtEveryWeekend

    Great video! What is the tire width on Pugs? Are the same front to rear?

    • @ElevationEveryWeekend
      @ElevationEveryWeekend  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks!! Really good question. It has the same tires front and back, Surly Nate. What’s interesting is all the info I have seen online, even in the 2014 Surly catalog, calls these tires 3.8”. The Nates on my bike say 26”x4.0”🤷🏻‍♂️. Currently, the Pugs comes with 4.3” Ednas, which are a bit less aggressive and lighter then the Nates, better for hard pack conditions too. The Ednas and going tubeless is my likely path to upgrade.

    Great video if you only had 1 fatbike would you go with 1x or 2x I have both I like a wide range I'd have to go 2x

    • @ElevationEveryWeekend
      @ElevationEveryWeekend  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a close call, as I definitely appreciate a good 2x setup. The 1x is great too and saves a little weight, but is more expensive generally speaking, though good 1x drivetrains are coming to the lower levels. I would probably pick a solid 1x overall, as I almost never use the small chainring on my 2x setups. Thanks for watching!

    I've got a Surly Pugsley. Been driving it every day for a little over a year. Absolutely love it. And with a few modifications I love it even more.
    Got rid of the derailleur and went with a Shimano Alipine 8 speed hub. Tossed the Surly Moloko handlebars for Jones H Loop.
    The Pugs goes everywhere and does everything and never lets me down. Undoubtedly the toughest, most reliable bike I've ever owned.

      @@ElevationEveryWeekend The Pugs is my first bike with mechanical disc brakes. I won't go back to hydraulic. Not worth all the fuss.

    • @ElevationEveryWeekend
      @ElevationEveryWeekend  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMNBlackBear I do appreciate the performance of hydraulic brakes, but I will keep the Pugs mechanical and just get a fresh, better setup.

    • @TheMNBlackBear
      @TheMNBlackBear 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ElevationEveryWeekend Yes, the hydraulics are obviously incredibly responsive, but I set up for my styles of driving, which is mostly commuting, then joy-driving, then expedition/bike camping. The mechanical brakes have never failed, never left me stranded out in the woods, the desert or on the other side of the county or trying to get to work on time. Can't say that about the hydraulics.
      I need to change my Surly OD 175mm cranks for 170mm. The 175mm are too long for my short legs. If you know of any lying around I'll be happy to purchase them. I can't find any. I think they're discontinued. Need to find an alternative to replace them.

      It would be possible, however the wheels would have to have the hub spacing to fit, which would need to be custom made as the wheels sizes you mention are not available off the shelf.

    Sorry man, I live in Hawaii and the only thing fat bikes are good for here is sand and that doesn't even do it. In the last 4 years I've seen 1 fat bike. And I've lived here for 60 years. Stick with the basics. Fads don't last. Aloha.

    • @ElevationEveryWeekend
      @ElevationEveryWeekend  ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly not the best option for your little
      slice of the world, but fat bikes work extremely well in many other parts, especially if you see snow. Even without snow, they are still a blast to ride! You should try one if you can!

    The Moonlander was the first mass produced fat bike, not the Pugsley.

    • @ElevationEveryWeekend
      @ElevationEveryWeekend  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Choo Choo Fixer the Pugs dropped as a frame set in 2005, and as a complete bike in 2011. The Moonlander came in 2012.
