Brush Cutting along the Railroad Track

- Today your going to ride in the cab of this brush cutter as we go down
track cutting brush along the way.
This KBR 925 brush cutter will cut out about 20 feet from the rails on both sides.
We were able to get at least 2 passes over our entire 16.8 miles of
track accomplished within 3 weeks time and this was mostly working
track while a train was running, and we did not work every single day
during that period, although we did have a couple of days of dead track
without a train running.
Watch last video where I give you an in cab tour of this machine:

It's awesome to watch someone who really enjoys what they do. Thank you for sharing and taking us along for the ride. God bless Dave. 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃
Thank you very much Ferdinand for taking the time to tune in and watch the video. May you have a most blessed day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Thank you my friend. I hope you have a wonderful day. Stay safe, God bless.
@@Ferdinandc 👍😊
In most other train videos we see the 100+ car trains just rolling right along. But in reality it is the maintenance crews that keep them rolling along! I love watching how it is done and the equipment itself, as much as I do watching the trains 😊.
Sweet Earl, really glad to hear you enjoyed the show today. We do
appreciate your nice comment and for watching my friend. And don't
forget all the carmen and signal crews and loco mechanics and
dispatch and all the other guys involved in keeping a train moving.
It's like a watch, lot of behind the scenes parts involved that no
one gets to see.
What a machine! Could sure use that in my friend's yard. It would turn a 6-hour job into a 6-minute job. Thanks, Dave.
Sure thing Scotty, make quick work of it! Gonna have to borrow
some of your trucks you've shown to get it there tho.
@@ccrx6700 Hahaha...you are correct about that. She's a bit of a chunky piece of machinery.
That job would drive me crazy.
It is intense Jerry, got to stay on your toes every second. I was
glad to get the entire track mowed and say goodbye to this machine.
Appreciate your taking the time to watch today my friend.
You know what they say, "Love your job and you never have to work a day in your life". Thanks for taking us along.
You are right in that Donnie. I do love my job here.
Really appreciate your dropping in on us and checking out the video. May you have a most blessed day my friend.
There is nothing like having a job you love. 😊
yep you are right in that. I'm almost 68 and if didn't love what I do,
then would be retired. Appreciate your tuning and watching the
video my friend.
Great prospective Dave. When you said cell phone I was like what huh cell phone. If funny when we had an accident or something the dispatch always wanted us to call in. But yet we were not suppose to use our cell phones.
I hear that Jason, funny how rules change when there are problems
to deal with. Last April we had to get 3 quotes on everything that
was contracted out or bought. Nothing could be done or bought
until those 3 quotes were attained. But, have a derailment like we
did last spring and it's anything you want, no quotes needed now....
you understand completely my friend.
I wish I had a dollar for every mile I’ve hiked on this track growing up. Hunted and fished along it my whole life.
Well now you can walk a track free of brush on the side! Hope
can sometime get to meet you out here. If you see me, hollar
and wave me down. Appreciate your watching the show my friend.
I never get tired of your content.....the weedcutter is a really good tool for keeping ballast in check as keeping down brush keeps down built up mud............I loved being a brakeman.....hated being a conductor.....when I left they bought me out to get rid of brakemen. But being a brakeman was more like what you are doing ....being able to play with the cool tools. The only thing I enjoyed as a conductor was running the throttle from time to time. I don t think that there is anything to get tired of in your job.....you lucky dog!!!
Thanks for the really cool comment Scott! Yep get to do a lot
of different things here. My dad always said, variety is the spice of
life. Appreciate your tuning in and checking out the video my friend.
Yes you can do something about it have them paint the mesh tan or light green/ grayish.
Nice machine, I love it , thanks BigAl California.
Will have to suggest that Al, seems like it would be a major
improvement. Mesh is a pain, but much better than having a
chunk of ballast go through the window and knock my teeth out
or worse. Hit ballast and it goes flying and impossible to avoid
hitting some. Appreciate your checking us out my good man.
Years ago the UP came through the town where I lived at that time with a huge weed/brush cutter. It was a large metal disc with chains fastened to it like string on a weed eater. My neighbor lived right next to the tracks. They broke 3 windows in his house and had to buy him a new screen door. They were taking down trees up to 12" Dia. with that thing. You could hear the shrapnel hitting all the buildings that were anywhere close to the tracks.
Wow that thing had to be wicked! One of those chains fly off and
Katy bar the door. I once tried using a chain saw blade on my
weed wacker, it was wicked for such a small thing, I can imagine
a huge machine like that would tear stuff up. Thanks for sharing Ben.
Flail mowers are like that just they have knives instead of chains. Unless you want to use one as a mine disposal tool. Like used in WW II on some tanks.
That would be a great job for an old retired railroader like me. I’d be happy to spend a few days running the second mower and get both sides at the same time. Would be a fun change is scenery too!
Well Bill, we would probably spend most of our time talking
railroading instead of cutting! LOL Would have loved to have you
with me my friend.
Pappy said what I was thinking. I could see Pappy being in that other seat and the both of you "playing" with that big toy all day long! LOL Great video. I really appreciate your videos. We get to see all of the different jobs and trials that are involved with the Railroad. You guys are all super great.
Appreciate your checking the video out my friend and glad you
enjoyed the show Valerie and Pappy has already requested having
the second seat!
Oh you know it Val, I would never wanna get out of that thing. It'd Be like 2 kids in a sand box.
ETR could really use this machine. It would make life a lot easier
you should get cameras to see
Appreciate your checking the video out my friend and glad you
enjoyed the show and I would love to get this thing out there
and do some cutting, but if they can afford the 10 grand a month
rental, I'd be happy to run it for them.
@@ccrx6700 did you have a chance to look up the diner that I think is where those 3 train bridges are ?
@@ocsrc No sir I did not, we currently have severe problems under ground
and no trains running, so we are working 12 hour days on track, and I
have almost no free time left currently, plus trying to keep up with all
the comments on these videos, editing them and publishing plus
trying to keep up with everything at home that needs done. Right now
I'm swamped
We normally don’t brush cut the small stuff on the ground like that , we do the bigger ones up to 10” diameter that are encroaching the ROW from the sides and we have a contractor with hyrail spray trucks and they spray some type of herbicide twice a year to control the small shrubs, sagebrush, etc.
Glyphosate (Roundup), some nasty stuff.
@@christopherrabaldo3377 Not what we were told 40 years ago. " So safe you could take a bath in it." Now Paraquat, that was a different story. What we had in some tests, who knows, as it was a trade secret. When you got items like that, it was time for all protective gear including a respirator. Did you ever use ethylene dibromide or methyl bromide? Those are some you did not want to come into contact with, but I did in the latter case. EDB I handled always was kept at below freezing temps to prevent it from turning to a gas until it was in the ground and sealed over. Even then it was PPE use the entire time. Methyl Bromide, not much could protect you from it so you always used it mixed with tear gas as a warning agent.
This is only the second time in 4 years we've gotten this in. For a whole
lot of years in the early days, they did nothing about the ROW and
we had a mess. Then about 20 years ago they started doing some
clean up work and there was a lot of chain sawing the big stuff
over the next few years so we don't have much big stuff that
close any more. Appreciate your checking the show out Jason.
Seems like you have a big job! Good thing you get machines for hire. I never realized how fragile a rail system could be! Mud!Ties that rot! Rail ends that go bad! And SO many other problems that crop up.
Always something to do here Laurence and with little man power
and time and money to do it. Very much appreciate your
taking in the video today my friend.
That machine does a fantastic job . Thanks for showing it to us .
Oh yeah, I could definitely enjoy being your wing man in that other seat, I'd be hacking whole trees, 🤣🤣 great show Dave, this was great seeing how its all maintained.
Diet Seth wants to come and run it with me, but I told him Pappy
was my first choice for a wing man!
@@ccrx6700 lol thanks Dave 😊 "shotgun" I called it first 🤣🤣
You are a man of many talents, Dave. Brush cutting is slow work but the outcome is safer. Fun to listen to a man who loves his work.
Thank you Shirley for the very kind comment. We really appreciate
your visiting with us and watching the show today my friend.
Hello Dave,
I just found your channel and you have a new subscriber!
I'm going through all of your past video and enjoying them very much. I'm learning a lot of railroad information. Your laugh is infectious and its nice to watch a happy go lucky person.
God bless you and yours, Boe
Thank you Boe and welcome to our community, we are glad to have
you with us and hope you will continue to enjoy. We are on the
Cumberland Mine RR. We run coal from a mine located near Kirby Pa.
to a river barge loading facility at Alicia Pa. 16.8 miles of track. We
do not interchange with any other RR.
Cutting close to the ground. We stay at least a foot off the ground for rail or what ever else we find. Old fence is always fun
I know exactly where every rail and other object is along this track,
only having 16 miles and riding it for 18 years, I should know by now! LOL We do keep the ROW pretty clean so there not much stuff
along it to hit. First time we had it in 2018 we hit some concrete
drain pipe abutments we didn't know was there! Now we know.
That is one quiet cab and I'm sure you are thankful for that! Good job! 👏🏻
Yes it is Leo, quietest cab of any MOW machine I ever been on.
Appreciate your watching the show my friend.
As interesting as the machine your running is, your comments on real railroading are priceless. I'm coming from the points of view of having worked for another short line railroad in Pennsylvania.
Well golly, gee.... Thank You my friend for the very nice comment.
Very special to me when a fellow railroader says things like that.
And please continue to share, I totally enjoy hearing stories of
what happens on other railroads.
So it's like a rail mounted lawnmower, classy

Really glad to hear you enjoyed the show today. We do appreciate your nice comment and for watching my friend.
An interesting machine. I see that it is possible to get mesmerized a bit while cutting, yet paying attention is key so as not to foul the blade or the arm. I think this approach is environmentally friendly. You could have sprayed herbicide like the large commercial railroads. Thank you for the ride-along :)
Wish we did spray the track bed, but on the right of way need the
vegetation and it's roots to prevent erosion. Thanks for checking
out the show today Brian.

Thats one cool toy they let you play with Ha ha Sure makes a good job of keeping the lineside tidy. I am glad you gave us the view you get and yes even after a short time that mesh got a bit of a distraction so can see why concentration is really needed for working this equipment. The radio message where you replied your location was I guess a locomotive operator had asked your train operator if he could move a train and your operator would pass on your message. Here we place a STOP sign on the track so there is always a physical marker as well. One drawback on that is you have to go back to remove it, where you can just say when you are clear of the line when yo reach the far end.
Looking thru screen was intense cedarcam but better than getting a piece of ballast thrown thru the window into my teeth or worse. Yes on message, they were switching cars at the harbor. Thanks my friend for
checking out the new video today.

@@ccrx6700 just so happens I’ve been there. I was in Canada about 2 miles north of the border working south back to the US. I was using the men’s room aka the left front tyre (Canadian spelling Cuz I was there ;). I finished my business and when I looked up to see a big ole CSX train creeping towards us bright lights on blowing its horn. Being pretty green back then I began to freak out and yelled for the other guys. We highballed back to the last crossing and set off. Turns out the train crew a had calling for our Canadian Foreman, and old hippy fella, for permission into our joint limits but he had turned the radio down. And the border patrol agents manning the scanner were getting impatient so started pulling slow looking out for us. We were never in any real danger but it got the old blood pumping a little. The things you can get away with on dark territory.

Ran a bush hog like that for Railworks, mostly in the the South, and anything under 6" is what we cut. This video is like a walk in the park compared to what I used to do. Anything bigger in the ROW, and I'd get out and cut it down with my chainsaw. LOL, would have loved to have this assignment.
Cool Patrick, it is intense, gotta keep focused all the time. After
cutting 16 miles of track I only showed a few minutes of what took
3 weeks, got into some pretty tough stuff on other points that
wasn't videoed, We had an excavator with a flail mower in here
couple years ago that cut some pretty thick stuff, but the bigger
things we chain sawed also. Appreciate your writing in and watching my friend.
@@ccrx6700 I worked on track for a couple of months that was being brought back into service. I remember it took all afternoon to knock down a couple of hundred yards or brush. That was in Northern Ga. LOL, guys on the short lines used to call the FRA on their own companies because the brush was so bad. In the 3 years before my retirement, I cut brush on about 14 states, sometimes 7 days a week. When my brush cutter was broken down, I used to do track work, mostly repairing broken joint bars. Life is good. RR track work keeps you young and strong, and thirty for cold beer at the end of the day.

Never heard of it but looked it up, Awesome looking machine!
Woof Woof
Ive always wondered how this was done because i couldnt imagine you guys doing it by lawnmower even the typed used by the state to maintain roads
They could use a tractor with a slasher or slope cutter attachment on the back but it might be a bit rough on the tires plus there's a large chance the tractor might get stuck on or in holes or ditches. This way, the mower always stays on relatively flat and level track and doesn't stand much risk of tipping over at all.
And now you know! Glad you enjoyed the video and we do
thank you for writing in and watching my friend.
That looks a lot easier than the road maintenance guys on tractor mounted versions, because you don't have to worry about steering, or passing traffic! Lol
It looks like you had a little fun and ran both at the same time?
Those guys here with the mowers on the tractors are constantly
having to dodge traffic. All I had to worry about was a train! LOL

a new video out every 4 to 5 days gonna be thru end of summer, plus
making new videos all the time,. This winter had 2 bad bearings on cars,
loco derailment, scrapping hopper cars, broken rails, and tons of other
stuff. Gonna keep you entertained for a long time my friend.
@@ccrx6700 it will be welcome, because i have to be vigilant with my skin cancer issue, cant be out in the sun for any length of time. And with the climate change issue, the sun feels much hotter than it did 60 years ago. My daughter and older grandson have the same problem, they are very fair-skinned, and get sunburn extremely easy.
That is the ultimate lawn mower/ weed wacker😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed the show today mclark, we do appreciate
your tuning in and checking it out my friend. Admission is always
free and you get the best seats in the house.... LOL
If you were to finish before the month's lease is over do you get a credit on the rental fee? Radio communications are good but terrain, ore deposits, etc can interfere with transmissions. Cell phones are allowed but the engineer is not allowed to use them while the engineer is operating. NJT issued cell phones to crew members for rail ops and for receiving formD's. The cutting looks good and an application of herbicide would help also. We used Asplundh for that. Great video as always. The conductor is the one who does the cell communication with the dispatcher.
Thanks Gary for the informative comment, I love hearing from you and
your sharing your RR knowledge with us. I wish they sprayed the
track, but not the ROW, need the vegetation and it's roots there
to help prevent erosion.
Tickles me, my buddy engineer for NS. No cell phones allowed to
be turned on, but when he has a problem, dispatch wants him to
call and talk about it on his cell. :-)
@@ccrx6700 NS has the conductor along with the engineer on the head end. The conductor is allowed to use the cell phone while train is in motion. Conductor is supposed to call out wayside signals and remind engineer of any restrictions prior to the location of the restriction. Ask your friend to give you a copy of the NORAC rules, it will make for some good reading. In addition bulletin orders are issued on a daily basis along with division notices outlining updates. When I started there were 4 man crews, no hand held radios, hand signals. We dropped cars, flying switches, etc. Only the locomotives had a radio. We had wayside telephones to contact the dispatcher or signal tower, 19 orders, no electronics. Like we used to say a beer in one hand, lantern in the other, knee deep in snow, my aren't we having fun!
Nice job!!
Glad you enjoyed the presentation today Bryan. We do
appreciate your tuning in and checking it out my friend.
Safety? Never heard of it. But that sure do make quick work of that brush. Impressive.
Appreciate your checking the video out my friend and glad you
enjoyed the show.
Sure Dave, I would be glad to help operate (or just monitor) the cutter on the other side! I'd work cheap....
We would have a grand time together Alan! Come on down.
Appreciate your checking out the show my friend.
Dave I watch your channel regularly; great detail and I recognize the area you are working in. Hope the John Deere equipment that I sold you is still making you money. From my experience selling Alamo Boom mowers I could make a recommendation to resolve the screen issue; we used Polycarbonate to retard debris flow and it is considered “bulletproof “, much better looking through a clear screen. Take care
Wow hey Phil, great to hear that, small world isn't it. Deeres are
doing well although we have slowed down considerable from
the excavating. Karl wanted to get into competition bow shooting
which takes every night practicing, He is doing remarkable with that,
4 international shoots last year, he won first in 2 and second place in
the other 2, was named shooter of they year. He is in Kentucky for
a match this weekend.
Screening was a pain but better than getting a piece of ballast
thru the window and into my teeth! Polycarbonate sounds like
a winner and will pass that on to the rental company where we
rented this machine. Do appreciate your watching the videos my
friend.
that was great.
Appreciate your checking the video out my friend and glad you
enjoyed the show Dave.
Just think of every bush you shred as someone who hacked you off.
nice machine
Thank you Patrick, really great to hear from you again my old friend!
Hope you and family are doing very well.
@@ccrx6700 doing well, moved into new house, lot of work moving, had forgotten how much. Would be nice if winter type weather would stop around here, need some nice days, only had a few. Nice to see your vid since i have been away doing things
@Patrick Halsey understand moving, lots work. Great to hear all is well with, thanks for getting back Patrick. Hope to hear from you again. I almost never get on Belen anymore, things have changed a lot since the old days when we had a good group of guys there.
@@ccrx6700 agreed, not to belen so much
FROM THE LOOKS, I'M GUESSING THE CUTTING HEAD IS 4 X 4 SO 2 PASSES WOULD BE ABOUT 8 FT, ?
Your absolutely correct sir, very good observation. Appreciate
your checking out the video today my good man.
Without knowing that, camera view makes the mower seem like a not impressive, two feet.
Very neat
I'll say they got that cab sealed up pretty good for noise or it seemed that way on this end. That's railroading!
🚂🌲🌳👷🇨🇦🇺🇲🙋
You are so right, it was inside a very quiet machine compared to
most MOW equipment. Appreciate your taking the time to check
out the show my friend. Hoping, hoping, hoping to see one of
these on your railroad, but of course if you do, I have to be the one
running it, you can sit in the buddy seat and run the other side!...LOL
We would make a great team and have a lot of fun together.
@@ccrx6700 it's alittle way off but will see if Santa has any MofW on the list. Just like the full size MofW equipment HO is scale priced according$$$ lol. I got a project on the layout that gonna take abit. If that works like its supposed too. The sideeffect will be your fire snake fingers crossed.
@@4everdc302 I can imagine pricing on stuff like that, but if Santa
bringing it all you gotta do is get on the good boys list, He go lot's
elves to make it at greatly reduced prices from what Kershaw charges....LOL
Sweet on the Fire Snake! I can see it now. Email me and I can send
you some pics of a snake can or even send you a can to show in that:
and we can't have any pull aparts on your line, but if we do, then gonna
have to get a whole set of Hulcher equipment to get things back on
track. So many possibilities so few dollars to finance them. But that;s
railroadin

@@ccrx6700 your welcome
that would wear me out having to try and look through that wire like that. the eye wants to focus on the close object. but it could look a whole lot different irl. slow goin though for sure.
It was intense, but better than getting a piece of ballast thrown
thru the window into my teeth or worse. Thanks my friends for
checking out the new video today.
@@ccrx6700 oh yeah there's no tellin what might come flyin atcha that cage is a must.
