    Mike held up the VC and instantly my brain said "Oh I thought it would be bigger" Then my brain replied with "That's what she said" LOL. Thanks for sharing this great video.

    I purchased a spare P38 box 10 years ago to have a spare coupling if needed, as the cost of a new one scared the wits out of me. Mmmm, I’ll check the spline this week. Thanks for the lesson…….. greatly appreciated.

    I rebuild my transfer box from my RRC MY 90 completely for peace of mind (viscous coupling seized up) and it costed me 1200€ in parts, but every moving part is replaced. I bought a viscous coupling from Ashcroft. They seem to be the only one in the buisiness to refurbish them, and sell a decent chain.

    Mike, at around 11 minutes you were driping fluid from either the coupling under test or the transmission when you started turning the coupling with the torque wrench

    Regarding framerate, smartphones and pc monitors have a default refresh rate of 60Hz, so video at 60fps is ultra smooth as it matches. 1080p60 is considered the optimum setting for internet video content. Some people only notice a change when they watch an old video at 30fps and see the micro-stutter on motion. But as always it's the content that's most important, and that's always top notch regardless of framerate.

    I rebuild one not too long ago. New chain, viscous coupling, shaft and bearings - so it's like new - over 1500 EUR/USD on parts alone. The thing is if someone really need/want one there is no cheap solution. I'm based in Europe and it's still so expensive that many rather choose to fit and adapt LT230. The chain Ashcroft sells is made in US by Ramsey Products, Charlotte, NC - so maybe you can get it cheaper. Providing that you have shaft with good splines, if you would replace the chain, bearings and seals you can put together box which can be of a great value to right person, if you happen to meet. Just don't forget to glue in bearings like I did :-D

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never been asked for one in 25 years so not much chance of selling one now - too expensive to be on the shelf!

    Excellent subject, great video Mike, those VC transfer cases were a "mystery box" and yet so simple looking, also irrelevant and unnecessary. My mate had the VM diesel and VC gearbox/transfer case out of an '89 RRC we fitted into his '85 County. It worked great for a couple of years but then the axle flange adapters started stripping out, yes, that VC had seized. We put the original geared transfer case in again, which still remains working perfectly ten years later. I rest my case.

    New frame rate looks great to me! By coincidence, I've started to wonder about my viscous coupling, lots of tyre squeal when turning sharply in multi-storey car parks. Now I've seen how easy it is I'll go check it out. Probably take two weeks of seized bolts etc to get anywhere near it!! As always many thanks for the videos, keep them coming please.

    Didn't realise the convertors were that hard to find (or frankly the bits so exxy) I've got a p38 borgwarner that I got cheap for a slightly ambitious project of using the hi/low gearing to make a reduction stage for my disco.

    The frame rate does make the video clearer I would say. Another interesting video Mike. Always learning and had heard of a viscous coupling but wasn't really sure what they did. They sound a bit like the same scenario with the Boge self levelling units like I've got on mine. I don't think you can get them these days and it's lots of dosh to get a refurbished one.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even 20 years ago, it was common practice to dump the self leveller and put heavy springs on the back, was a good idea until the warranty ran out...

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I tried that, but I learned a lesson a long time ago that I really need to have a customer's transmission here and opened before I send a replacement out - I have had some that look like a grenade has gone off in them- - hardy any serviceable parts - gets expensive to rebuild as I have to import parts or complete transmissions to replace them - the core charge would have to be very, very high!

    Oh this is awesome, I’ve only heard people arguing about VCs on the internet but I’ve never had a visual of what’s actually happening. This isn’t going back on the RR is it,?you switched that to lt230 last I saw. Great video either way. Learned something here today.

  • @tonypacke6954
    @tonypacke6954 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I haven't had an issue with the quality you put out. If the change in frame rate causes extended up load time I wouldn't really bother about changing. Regarding the spline wear on a gearbox that has supposedly done around 75000 miles. What would cause that sort of wear. Would play in the next joint in-line (diff / UJ) cause that sort of thing to escalate.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have fibre internet now so speed is not an issue, but it was bugging me why other folks videos were much clearer for the same 1080 rating - camera was set at 60 frames a second, but rendering was 30.
      Spline wear - could be dirty oil or low oil, could be drive line - very hard to focus on as I have not seen it before

    Hello, I have had some similar problem on my D2 Td5 auto, front wheels would jump in corners, it eventually broke my front propeller shaft. I checked the diff and changed cv joints, but does anyone know if D2 transfer case has a similar viscous coupling? Thanks.

    • @BritannicaRestorations

      The D2 had an LT230 like the Defender - sounds like the centre diff is locked up

  • @roversteve53
    @roversteve53 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I take it that was from a P38 Mike would a RRC be similar if so why not just strip it down and put it back together for "educational purposes", yes I am still waiting to rebuild my one it's sitting at the back of the workshop waiting for the man who knows to show the way, by the way the brake seal tool worked a treat ( see what I'm doing there ) the new pictures work great.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The P38 output is on the left-hand side but has the same coupling - not much call for either box nowadays - maybe I will keep it for a winter strip down project but not buy new parts
      Glad the tool worked out!

    Mike. Having a similar experience with bump steer on the Rangie too ! I've recalled running one front style 'Defender' and a rear mounted axle "D1/D2" steering stabiliser helps ? V.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never worked out why some Rovers do bump steer and some don't - mainly RR's and Disco 1's - Never had it on D2, or P38 come to that, but the suspension was different, so I think that sorted it

    Mike slightly off subject but do you know why 110 rear drive shaft and flange are separate,but 90 and classic Rangies are solid? Would it make any difference to swap to solid? What do you think 🤔 thanks Alan

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know solids are not available for 110 - no idea why - I have been welding them up on the outside flange ( only on new shafts and flanges, so there is no wear), and so far so good
