Love that Chinese opera radio music in the background. Kai Man Wong The lady barber is absolutely cool. One thing about ultra wides - f/4 runs out of DOF because the angle of view is so wide - this causes onlookers and viewers (who don't shoot near distance, ultra wides) to think that the photo is blur - the out of focus blur wrap around doesn't look like telephoto compression as in a head and shoulders portrait.
Ananda Sim For this reason when shooting subjects that don't move with an ultra wide, head for the higher F stop numbers... having more of the shot in sharp focus will make the casual onlooker think the shot is clearer or more detailed.. leave the shallow DOF effects for the fast primes.
DigitalRev TV hey drtv, what music did you use from 2:25 to 6:15. keep up the AWESOME videos!!!!!!!!!!! you guys are seriously the best photography channel in existence
love how they highlight some awesome old school shops and businesses in the city, and make like a documentary out of it, love this video style as it reviews the lens and is really interesting too!
CottonSwabz Yep! That's why I quit photography! I go to events and people automatically think I'm being malicious with my canon! I photographed trains and got mean mugged by the cops! I really miss my shooter! #canonuser
I like how you highlight that person's mahjong shop. It was cool seeing the precise craftsmanship that goes into carving those things by hand. One of the more enjoyable episodes you've put out recently. =)
Liqi Liang I was actually watching the video and saying to myself "I wanna hear Kai talk to the people in the language!" and it happened. I can die happy now
A lot of people think that wide angle lenses are just for scenery and landscapes. My simplest explanation for why wide lenses are cool is that they give a close up subject more context by bringing in the environment in a tight space.
That was an awesome review Kai, Lok and whoever contributed to it. Loved the Mahjong shop and how you captured it (images & film). Lol @ the Japanese, how she got confused. It happens to me too, speaking English in other countries. I guess, people than assume by you look that you speak natively and are for a second so surprised by your accent, that they think you speak another language.
I kinda wanted to never "like" a video about a Canon or Nikon product (trying to save my likes for your Pentax videos), but YES "like" for more of Hong Kong's hidden gems.
DigitalRev TV This is one of the best vids you've done for a long time. Loved seeing the hidden gems of Hong Kong, the Mahjong lady was awesome. Your pics with this lens were also great :-)
Thinking of buying this to replace my Sigma 12-24mm. When I used this 11-24mm beast a few times I too noticed how insanely sharp the photos turned out on the 5D Mark III! Apply a slight amount of sharpening and you're rivalling medium format for sure! And also I could find almost no faults with the lens distortion either - at 11mm it's insanely well-corrected, something I could only have said about the Sigma 12-24mm (first version) before!
This has been my favourite video you guys have released ever! I knew this lens was going to be fantastic! But this video made me remember the old Hong Kong!
So, hold on... Kai actually speaks Chinese? Btw, I really enjoyed the actual up close and personal approch of this video. Watching the craftsman work on his Mahjong tiles was great, and the way you guys used the haircut as a modeling opportunity was great too:)
lens maybe good, but you my friend are a great entertainer. I have been watching your videos not for the reviews but to watch you. Keep doing the good work.
Say what you want, I have now ordered two lenses of these guys, every single one has been hassle free and saved me money! The latest Samyang took three days only from HK, I have just recently ordered batteries from within uk where I live, they are going to take longer ffs :0 Great service guys, I shall be buying my Fuji 56 from you asap!
One of the best episodes for months. Old school and a bit of a travel documentary thing going on. When are we going to see Richard Ayoade making a guest appearance? ;-)
Agreed Tales of War. Canon is taking advantage that they have the widest full frame lens on the market. There is a Sigma 8-16mm, but it is for APS-C cameras, which makes it a 12-25mm
Best video you guys have! It's bloody amazing! An amazing review of an amazing lens that I will never be able to afford coupled with a tour of interesting places in Hong Kong!
Kai, Lok and the entire DRTV-team: I'm so glad to see good old fashioned reviews! This was entertaining, with some sight-seeing without being just a long mess-around (albeit there was a cock-joke, but it was okay. ;P). I also love seeing more of Hong Kong without you trashing the place or making fun of old people. You actually talked about the lens, its specs and its image quality with good example shots (I loved the close-ups on the Mahjong-artist). Keep this up - keep this style and you won't be hearing that much whining anymore!
Awesome over used these days I agree, but suitable to describe that gentleman making hand made tiles. Pretty good camera, do they ever lie. Now we know they do.
The only alternative to this for APS-C Shooters is the Sigma 8-16mm which doesnt look that bad construction wise (15 lenses in 11 groups, 4FLD, 1SLD, 3ASPWould be cool to seen an review of that lense as this is available for about 700$
Kai is clearly born in England, but half of his videos take place in Hong Kong/China, also, his friends are clearly asian-speaking, so I wonder: does Kai have family members in Asia? Are his friends also english-born, and if not, how did he meet them? Does Kai speak his "native" language? Yes he does. I kept asking myself "does he know chinese does he know chinese". This video answered me. I wonder if he had to study it, or his family is double-languaged. I love this international culture exchanges, I enjoy watching these videos.
+Vespertili Kildem It's pretty common to speak Cantonese if you're born in a former British colony, most my school friends only speak Cantonese together at school and we're in Australia. I don't speak it often because I was educated more in Mandarin Chinese as my parents thought it'd be more useful in my lifetime, but I do speak it colloquially.
The look is like those 1920s American crime scene photographs, I didn't think this would be interesting, but as an arty interior lens it is quite fascinating. I wonder how many estate agents will buy it?
That reportage shooting thing was awesome! Also an incredible lense. Kai have you ever had the Fuji 10-24mm ultrawide in your hands? I am using it as "pro" photographer and find its performace really really good. Especially together with the beautiful Fuji sensors. I think it is so interesting because it is so cheap compared to other lenses in various system.
The Barbershop segment is one of the best I have seen so far on Digitalrev. It's a great look at Hong Kong. As for the Nikon 14-24mm? I'm sure it is a great lens. Nikon fanboys need to have at least one good lens right? But seriously 3mm wider in this range is huge. It's an entirely different animal.
It's a special day. Kai has finally spoke Cantonese!
Wow this is the best episode of Digitalrev yet. Great balance of interesting locations and lens test info. Nice photos too Kai.
Nikon 14-24 f2.8 is better though.
I really liked this video, taking the audience on a quick tour of hong kong shops as you review the lens. And that lens... yum.
I'm glad your going back to having more informative reviews.
Wow. Finally heard Kai speaking some Cantonese. Not bad to be honest!
Desmond Ma What did you think of his accent?
jcreek23 Hongkongers can immediately tell the accent of a British Chinese (i.e. Kai's accent), but communication is not a problem at all ;)
Desmond Ma That's good to know - I like his accent :)
Desmond Ma what did he say? I think is was like Yīng ó sè sài (thanks to google speach recognition) but what does that mean?
Desmond Ma do you know what Kai said? I think it was yīng ó sè sài (got it from google translate) but what does that mean in english?
Love that Chinese opera radio music in the background. Kai Man Wong

Been doing that Hamish McGregor - quite a few years now
Probably the best looking, cinematic video you've guys have ever done. Great lighting.
Have any favourite spots for ultra-wide lens street photography?
Kevin Cureau Mostly looked to be Hung Hom.
DigitalRev TV hey drtv, what music did you use from 2:25 to 6:15.
keep up the AWESOME videos!!!!!!!!!!! you guys are seriously the best photography channel in existence
DigitalRev TV
Marrakech market, Morocco :)
***** Thanks! Yeah I figured out the location of the shops by looking at clues in the video! :p
DigitalRev TV Istanbul market...
Finally, a good, old-time, proper lens review!! Hooray!
love how they highlight some awesome old school shops and businesses in the city, and make like a documentary out of it, love this video style as it reviews the lens and is really interesting too!
10:27 that was just brillantly done XD
this is probably the first episode of yours ive watched where the shots exampled from the lens i actually enjoyed, good stuff fellas :D
This monster costs more than my whole kit altogether... oh well.
+Dani Timo hahaha
My whole kit is $600 haha
my whole kit is just a 6d mk2 and a 5d mk3, some canon 24mm lens some canon 100mm lens some canon 50mm lens and a backpack
And it’s not even f2.8
Love these episodes, where the tools are combined into a story - which, mostly is what photography is all about - storytelling.
I like to imagine they didn't even ask the guy to photograph him and he just doesn't care.
LOL
CottonSwabz Yep! That's why I quit photography! I go to events and people automatically think I'm being malicious with my canon! I photographed trains and got mean mugged by the cops! I really miss my shooter! #canonuser
xero925 Can I know where is this happen? Which country?
xero925
Wow that's insane.
عمار الشايب
Only in America.
I like how you highlight that person's mahjong shop. It was cool seeing the precise craftsmanship that goes into carving those things by hand. One of the more enjoyable episodes you've put out recently. =)
Oh Lok, you got me again lol Nice green screen editing!
Karson Cheung I thought that was a mirror truck
My favourite piece of technology in this video is that drill at 3:55. That's genius.
Yes thank you! I went back and watched it a bunch of times
Julius Bernotas I
Oh wait. So Kai actually knows how to speak Cantonese? I didn't know that. xD
Liqi Liang First time hearing him speak it lol
Liqi Liang um......he speaks Cantonese in some videos long long time ago
a78495184 But it seems the first time hearing Kai speaks in Cantonese "normally" lol
Liqi Liang I was actually watching the video and saying to myself "I wanna hear Kai talk to the people in the language!" and it happened.
I can die happy now
well, first time i get to hear Lok speak chinese as well lol
Those interior shots were spectacular.
Best review or even video in a while guys, thanks for showing us different parts of Hong Kong! Love the audio through this video.
A lot of people think that wide angle lenses are just for scenery and landscapes. My simplest explanation for why wide lenses are cool is that they give a close up subject more context by bringing in the environment in a tight space.
One of the better videos from DigitalRev TV. Keep it up :)
That was an awesome review Kai, Lok and whoever contributed to it.
Loved the Mahjong shop and how you captured it (images & film).

Here in 2021 still the best video on this lens. Great stuff
and back in 2024 after all these deleted videos were restored.
i'll admit it, i fell for your greenscreen van this time
DigitalRev TV This is one of the best vids you've done for a long time. Loved seeing the hidden gems of Hong Kong, the Mahjong lady was awesome. Your pics with this lens were also great :-)
Finally! The show is getting interesting again! Nice places, good shots! Thanks Guys!
Hey, this was really good. One of my favorite videos from you guys. The pacing, the music, the barber shop. Well done! :)
I loved this episode. Reminded me of the good old days of digital rev
i like that vintage barber shop and the mahjong artisan!
Excellent video. I love videos where you show the people and culture of Hong Kong! What an amazing place for photography. I hope I can go some day.
Thinking of buying this to replace my Sigma 12-24mm. When I used this 11-24mm beast a few times I too noticed how insanely sharp the photos turned out on the 5D Mark III! Kai is using a camera strap. This is the end of the world!
This has been my favourite video you guys have released ever! I knew this lens was going to be fantastic! But this video made me remember the old Hong Kong!
This feels more like classic Digitalrev. Nailed it.
It's weird how modest and shy Kai seems to be when he speaks Cantonese XD
That Mahjong tile-maker, though... What a job... What a shop. - Fascinating in a way.
Say what you want, I have now ordered two lenses of these guys, every single one has been hassle free and saved me money!
The latest Samyang took three days only from HK, I have just recently ordered batteries from within uk where I live, they are going to take longer ffs :0

One of the best episodes for months. Old school and a bit of a travel documentary thing going on. When are we going to see Richard Ayoade making a guest appearance? ;-)
Well, now Kia saying 'MASSIVE' at 6:16 is my new ring tone.
I much prefer these out and about, exploration videos where you do something that puts a product to the test :) Great vid!
Agreed Tales of War. Canon is taking advantage that they have the widest full frame lens on the market. There is a Sigma 8-16mm, but it is for APS-C cameras, which makes it a 12-25mm
This video is really greAt! Thanks for having the hair cut in the shop for the video
well done, once more, guys ! Love the idea going for a hair cut while reviewing ... :-)
Love this lens! It would be excellent for real estate and yacht photography. Great review guys.
kai needs to do an entire review in cantonese
Oh, more exotic places of Hong Kong like these, please. Calligraphy block is awesome and barber lady so cool.
Back to form video guys, well done. The hairdresser did a good job as well if you ask me.
Show us more hidden gems of Hong Kong. Great Job Kai ;)
€ 2999,00 der Wahnsinn !!
really like this episode of DRTV. Please do stuff like this!!!
It's the first time I hear you speaking in Cantonese to the barber lady.
She initially asked if you were Japanese ! LOL!!!
Please do a comparison to the Canon 14mm f/2.8L.
I already own it and think its awesome.
Best video you guys have! It's bloody amazing! An amazing review of an amazing lens that I will never be able to afford coupled with a tour of interesting places in Hong Kong!
for the first time I heard Kai speaks Chineseeee...
Dao Quang I didn't hear any Chinese but I became the 42nd liker of this comment
Dao Quang
When he said he's English?
@@SM_zzz well he said. He said he was born and raised in England.
and not even a word on the legendary 14-24mm f2.8 nikkor ? Come on guys
KiraWasHere -flickr Nikon 14-24 is a toy compared to this.
Up to my nuts in guts HAHAHA hilarious.. there is no lens that can match the Nikon 14-24 to date. It is a completely superlative lens.
KiraWasHere -flickr Last I checked the Nikon 14-24 is a 2.8. Hands down a better lens.
Up to my nuts in guts lol what a dumb dumb
Great review. That lens truly is amazing. The price though... As a poor student, I can only dream about it...
Just bought this lens cant wait to try it out!
Kai, Lok and the entire DRTV-team: I'm so glad to see good old fashioned reviews! Finally! A good review AGAIN! Nice haircut also.
One of the the best DPR episodes ever.
Fantastic green screening, you had me!
I haven't watched a DRTV video in a long time, but this is the first time I've heard Kai speak Chinese (Cantonese?).
kyandeiai watch the episode where he had a photography exhibition, he spoke more canto in that
Jonathan Foong could you please link the video? Couldn't find it. Thanks!
***** th-cam.com/video/N9kOgrKDlhc/w-d-xo.html I just searched digital rev exhibition and voila!
Jonathan Foong Sorry for the late reply but thanks!
I love the colors from this lens.
Best review in awhile. Thumbs up.
Awesome episode. Keep them coming!
I would like more Hidden Gem please like this and that print shop. Have Ian do Analog Rev of places like that plz
Glad you dropped the "silly" stuff and got back to a somewhat more reasonable review like your early uploads.
Cantonese opera that played in the barbershop is good. Should use it as the bgm in each episode if possible. :)
DxO Viewpoint can correct that distortion of faces that you get with wide-angle lenses.
FINALLY a nice review again😍
Nice shots man.
With my 16-35 f2.8 i rarely go below 24mm. So i think a lens like this one is rather for landscapes
Great video and great haircuts.
Awesome to see the old Hong Kong. Please give us more.
Awesome over used these days I agree, but suitable to describe that gentleman making hand made tiles. Pretty good camera, do they ever lie. Now we know they do.

Thanks, drTV! I've been waiting for this review!!!
I like the hair cuts, looks very good on you.
Can we just admire the artistic skill of the mahjong lady?
Finally, I have seen all things I need to see in my life--Kai spoke Cantonese.
Kai is clearly born in England, but half of his videos take place in Hong Kong/China, also, his friends are clearly asian-speaking, so I wonder:
does Kai have family members in Asia?
Are his friends also english-born, and if not, how did he meet them?

3:50 Even tilting the lens slightly will make a human being look a bit extra terrestrial LMAO
nice to see Hong Kong Behind the Scenes
that was a great wideo... Keep these coming!
I really enjoyed this video review! YES for more hidden gems of Hong Kong :-D
The look is like those 1920s American crime scene photographs, I didn't think this would be interesting, but as an arty interior lens it is quite fascinating. I wonder how many estate agents will buy it?
A very beautiful yet rather expensive lens. Great video! I got to use one on my 5D Mark lll, it was amazing!
Very interesting, not the camera stuff, the hair cut and Mahjong part are awesome.
Any drop test on this lens soon?
Good episode indeed. Showing some Chinese traditional industries.
btw Kai sounds cute when he speaks cantonese
That reportage shooting thing was awesome! Also an incredible lense. Kai have you ever had the Fuji 10-24mm ultrawide in your hands? I am using it as "pro" photographer and find its performace really really good. Especially together with the beautiful Fuji sensors. I think it is so interesting because it is so cheap compared to other lenses in various system.
I found all the urban China exploration to be more interesting than the actual lens. That was really cool.
comparing this lens to Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II.. well, I think Tokina is doing better and it even has a bigger aperture F2.8.
It's funny that when Kai was shaking the camera, he was more shaking himself. Lol
u never hear kai speaking chinese with british accent, weird but kinda refreshing LOL
The Barbershop segment is one of the best I have seen so far on Digitalrev. It's a great look at Hong Kong. As for the Nikon 14-24mm? I'm sure it is a great lens.
