Still rocking my one-owner 2002 GLS 1.8T with the sport suspension and 17" wheel options. Still a great car even in slightly lesser trim without the mods shown here. Fun to drive and tremendously dependable. Just spent twice the book value getting it repainted, plan to hold on to it as long as possible. Love the early ones before VW started adding bright work to the exterior and the instrument panel - it looks like a spaceship inside at night with the pure blue and red dash lights that even extend to the factory Monsoon radio. Even with the weathered paint I smile every time I walk up to it.
I have a mk4 golf with the 1.8t 20v. I've done tons of stuff to it and I have to say it's a great first car and they're reliable. They can be made fast very easily.
I bought my 05 Platinum Grey GLI December 26th of 08, home on leave from the USAF. 3 years old, 72,000 miles, I got it for $10,500 out the door. That car carried me through my whole enlistment, and a few years as a civilian after that until it was taken by some asshole who ran a red light... By that point it was running GIAC X+ with a K04, FMIC, and 3" turbo-back. Tasteful, but probably around 300whp. Those BBS RC wheels are so light, i always hated seeing people swap them off. They bend easily, and I lost like 5 tires to DC/Maryland potholes - but all that can be fixed... I got more unsolicited, "Beautiful car!" comments with a visually stock GLI than I've gotten with anything I've driven before/since. Nothing but great memories, this video was a great nostalgia trip! Now I kinda wanna buy one and built the tits off of it...

It's so cool that kids are into the MKIV's from when I was in High School (and into my first year and a half of college). I have owned more MKIV VW's than any other brand of car overall lol...they're just such great cars. Having a knowledge of the 2 (major) 1.8t and VR6 engines makes it really easy to just pick up and mod a 'new' one if I grabbed one today. I'm not as familiar with the V6 Passat engine, unfortunately. The only Passats I owned from that era were the MK5.5's and the 2 I've owned were both 1.8T's (I wasn't dumb enough to get the W8 lol). Anyways, ya really cool to see younger people in their 20's interested in these cars!

If ur going get this car make sure to look into the engine n see nothing is wrong with it. Also I advise u some of the parts are plastic witch crack over time like the water pump. Also the hoses are rubber witch get brittle n ware out over time. Mostley if u looking into customizing n upgrading a car with a expensive parts then go ahead. But if u wanna save u money get you a Honda or other car. I bought my jetta for $1000 but came with a issue shifting hashing n turned out to be the computer witch is comon with this cars. Altho I love it just the feel n the look. But let me know what u think.
3:00 the constant clapping is a bit distracting and you sound like a younger Doug Demuro lol. But that's enough bashing from me. Good job on the review. I bought my 2003 VW Jetta 1.8T new and am now on my second one. The auto will only last 160,000 miles when the engine is performance modded to any significant degree, another reason to go manual! My original engine is still going strong at 215,000 miles. I installed it myself (just using the internet) into a 2004 Jetta and I'm still buying upgraded power mods for it. Check for the service records, and make sure the car hasn’t been too heavily modded in the engine department that would ruin the reliability !
