    So great to hear someone say what I've been thinking about the open shelf trend. It looks modern but not practical if you are trying to make best use of space in the kitchen.

    So true! Trying to organize your overload of stuff is insane! What we need to do is edit what we have (donate/toss it) before we organize what we actually do use and need on a weekly basis. Too many of us think that we just need more baskets and bins to store stuff, when in fact, we need less so everything has a designated space that’s not jammed up.

    Yes! What a good reminder, You can't organize clutter!! I also don't buy any containers until the space is decluttered and ready to be organized. If you aren't sure if something is really needed, put it in a box and if you don't reach for it in a month, then let it go. Excellent tips Shannon, you look extra pretty today 🌼

    I love that you helped your mom let go and she helped you organize ❤️
    You and mom are such an inspiration, I am a year and a half into my decluttering journey, and my mom gave me all the same grief, along with guilt (why don't I care about the family enough to keep tea cups from great grand whoever I never met? Won't my son feel unloved if his pictures aren't wallpapering my living room? Etc.)
    Now, I am urge/helping my mom declutter, as my parents' health declines and they are having mobility issues, their once organized over abundant pack-ratted home has become a near-hoarded danger.
    I look forward to watching more of your shared videos with your mom to prepare me to gently encourage my own mom to let go.
    (Thank your mom too for sharing her journey with us!)

    I wound up switching my master bedroom and a smaller spare bedroom. It’s been great. My former huge walk-in custom closet makes a much better storage area and cleaning station. The room itself also is much more ideal for all my little DIY projects (often just some furniture refinishing or small paint projects etc). And now my new “little” bedroom is very cozy. I only keep a handful of clothes in the storage closet (my room closet is pretty small now lol) that aren’t worn near as often (fancier clothes for special occasions and a few off season hanging items). I find it now way more functional and efficient to just live my life like I want to.
    I couldn’t let go of a couple of antique chests, so now I have a cute way of storing cleaning rags, paint stuff, cleaning products, etc inside of these two chests I already had. It’s easy for me to just open a drawer to get what I need and I very much enjoy seeing the chests daily as I go about my business. So ya know. Didn’t need to go buy so many bins either Bcuz the chests are both sturdy and roomy and pleasant to look at. And I can let them be “half refinished” for as long as I want and go as slowly as I want with them while they are still being useful to me.
    I also half set up a living room nook space for a little cozy space to chill or a short term guest could actually sleep there and have a place for their clothing and personal effects. Pretty cool. I call it my “loft” space (it’s huge lol) Bcuz a guest could do everything in that room except food prep, laundry and shower (dining table and small extra cute fridge is also in that space, as my kitchen is too small for a table).
    I decided to go ahead and be “radical.” Now I’m glad I rolled with all my “weird” ideas. Lol.

    I just found your video so practical and reasonable! thank you for sharing Mom's wisdom too ☺️. here's my tip for you: who doesn't have those awful low kitchen cabinets you have to squat to get to, well, that bread maker for instance. I ran across Ana White's video on how easy it is to make a roll out shelf. I gave it a go and turned an almost unusable cabinet to a fabulous pantry with two roll out shelves. I had to make some adaptions but now I've learned something that I can use in the future. I just wanted to share that because when you're talking about organizing, a rollout shelf is a game changer. I hope you give it a try!

    I believe this is the best video I've ever seen on this topic. I love how you keep referencing your mother and helpful tips she taught you. And you are so right about knowing the layout and function of different areas of the home before just jumping in and halfway through it gets so frustrating and overwhelming because of lack of proper planning. I have wasted so much money on organizing gadgets, books, hooks, baskets, etc. that didn't work in the space, wrong size, and looked ugly and stupid in my house. Meanwhile, being no more organized than when I started. I am going to rewatch and make good notes, and of course, like and subscribe Thank you!

    I've totally been there with the kids stuff and toy overwhelm. They've helped me declutter their things slowly over the last two years (while being careful about what we bring in) and now almost all their toys are in our former linen closet. Declutter first is usually the missing step for organization. Thanks for the inspiration the last few years 💖😍

    Good tips, Shannon. Some of them were aha's that I intuitively knew but had never tried to articulate. I agree the food storage containers can be ridiculously expensive. I recently bought a used set of airtight containers off facebook marketplace for $2 a container from a women moving. Much cheaper than the $30 I saw for ONE container at target. just a suggestion if you want to look for a cheaper way to find some. I will say they profoundly improved the amount of cabinet space I now have.

    Staying on task... I listen to audiobooks and podcasts. Audiobooks especially help keep me on task AND later when I am doing the same task again, I will remember whatever part of the book I was listening to the last time I did said task. Also, TH-cam has a ton of awesome life music playing channels... artists/playlists of course but also like classical music, jazz music, guitar music, etc... I love Tim Janis and Gently Peaceful... when my kids get home from school, I turn on Odd Eagle... the trick is, play the LIVE streams, not the previously recorded... LIVE streams will start w commercials but will not be interrupted by commercials.

    On the subject of containers, use what you have. I store the lids for my plastic containers in the largest containers and all like containers are stacked inside each other. My daughter also uses large containers that were used for their biscotti and they are now canisters for free! When decluttering and organizing, put drawer organizers in one place, then "shop your house" first.
    A comic note: when we bought our refrigerator, I took a turkey roaster and our 4 gallon stock pot with us. My husband was embarrassed, but the salesman thought I was a prepared shopper. This was important when you have a Sicilian husband who loves to cook for a crowd.

    I started 6 yrs ago with decluttering and minimalism. I took it in steps and in order. 1 st month or two, i just kept focusing on what is trash. That's it. Keep getting it out. Then phase 2 for a fouple more months, what i dont need or use, all those went to donation. 3rd i focused on organizing what was left and along the way with that, i learned there was more to donate. I never bought any containers till i was at last phase. By then, i had already found in my decluttering just the amount of containers i need or want. 4. I stopped shopping! I would shop home 1st. See what i could repurpose. 5. I make a list of needs before i go to the store. I dont go to the store until i have had 6 weeks of curating that list. With thoughfulness, i was able to see that there was several items i truly did not need and could delete. 6. Be honest with you. You need to check yourself. The infuence is strong and real. Going shopping is like being in the garden of Eden, temptation is there, and you are having to debate in your mind about paying for something that you are attracted to, what ever it is that is in our heads. Its exhausting. I dont want the debate, i bring my curated list, get it and get out. I dont need the whisperings in my ear telling me I want it. I know i do, but I dont need it! Deceptive foolery. I dont like getting played like that when i know better.

Next week or two I test the system, is it convenient, am I really putting all that things out, how does it feel. If everything is OK, I go and buy containers (or use my cartonage skills to make a proper one). Shoe boxes or storage?

  • @princessdumbarton9877
    @princessdumbarton9877 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A shoebox lid would do the same thing as that organizer you're holding. If you buy things by the case, they usually come in a shallow cardboard box, you can use those too. People don't need to buy all this stuff, it just ends up in a landfill.

    Such good tips! I've been following some organising accounts on Instagram and have been so tempted to buy all kinds of containers to make my kitchen more organised. But the truth is, it already is organised, just not "insta-worthy". The food already comes in packages that is good enough for storing it. Thanks for the reminder!☺️

    Simple, practical ideas that *work*! Especially if you are trying to "minimalize", why buy more stuff ie: bins, labels etc. I like using less materials like you illustrated. If something comes in a perfectly fine zip close bag, I only use that and also reusable bag clips to keep bags closed and dry goods fresh.

    "We need to normalize normal looking homes." Yes! We've worked hard to organize our homes. Those unrealistic picture perfect homes are not achievable in real life. They make us feel bad that we don't have all the latest and greatest organizing supplies when we should be celebrating what we have achieved.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes! I agree with this so much! Seeing these perfect home images can be inspiring sometimes, but they can also make us feel bad like our home is unorganized just because it doesn't "look" a certain way. We should be so excited that we have achieved a home that functions well, even if it's not super trendy. =)

    I like how you show cabinets that are organized but not Pinterest perfect! It is real life - when I see the Pinterest perfect cabinets I always suspect it only looks like this for the time it took to take the picture - not everyone has the time or money to decant cereal and crackers into clear plastic containers, that doesn’t mean you are not organized. Although I do realize this is a necessity for some because of insects or humidity - not throwing shade at those folks, or even for those who do this because they love how it looks - you do you - just saying a cabinet can be organized without this step

    I organize the make up that I wear every day in the order I will use it. I mean, liners next to mascara, next to the brow pencil, next to the brow mascara. Yes, I use a brow mascara. That avoid thinking what is next.

    If you spend the money for colour coordination, you’re setting yourself up for ‘needing’ Pinterest-worthy spaces. If you’re like me, you use shallow pans and candy boxes to organize and you smile because you’re organized and not spending money.

    FYI, in one of your videos you avoided donating under wear. Many thrift stores do sell bras and underwear. If they are clean and in good condition, they could be very helpful. At $15-20 apiece new, they are expensive!

    I'm actually going to order some pull out shelves from Home Depot and easier utilize the back of my shelves. I'm not getting any younger, so bending over, squatting and crawling in cabinets isn't working for me

      I can relate to that! Getting things out of low cabinets is a major pain. That is something we are going to think about when we eventually redo this kitchen =)
