I was in a relationship with a diagnosed malignant narcissist for more than 17 years, out of it since 2014.
For me there were two good things that came out of the trump presidency. #1 I was able to study narcissism from afar and without the threat of hovering. And #2, our son was able to make the connection "Hey, that's just like dad.". With that I was able to explain NPD, reassure him that it wasn't his fault, and teach tips so that he could protect himself better.
Other than that, the trump presidency made me ill and I'm already having huge anxiety just thinking about having to see those traits in the spotlight again if he wins in November.

On YT, Dr. Les Carter does an excellent job of going over the traits for newbies to NPD.
I recognize narcissists by my own mom and older sister. Trusting another fully is impossible for me.
Our country can't survive more of NPD in the White House.

@@andreah6379 Mom, dad, and older sister for me. It is a process, as Dr. Hassan described, to learn about narcissism, recognize it in someone you trusted, feel relief as you can finally see puzzle pieces fall into place, and then mourn what you realize you never had.
Interestingly, I found MTN after watching the Johnny Depp trial streamed by attorneys on TH-cam. Many, many people followed it closely because of personal experience with narcissistic abuse. We immediately recognized Amber Heard's NPD, and that she abused and - yes, really - defamed Johnny Depp. There is a lot of evidence online, even more than they presented in the trial. The way every corporate media source covered it with such laziness and/or dishonesty was a real eye-opener for me. I also realized how many people do not recognize NPD, and the vulnerability that causes. Recognizing narcissism because you've been abused is like the gold that holds together the pieces of the broken bowl.
I hope you were able to get out of that situation!
Get rid of the filibuster, the electoral college, and make presidential hopefuls go through a rigorous vetting process.

I believe Trump appeal’s to those who have an axe to grind. My brother who I’ve always thought was a logical thinker has become bitter and twisted over the choices he has made in his life. He was perfect fodder for Trump. He has become a recluse because he can’t stand to admit he was wrong about his dear leader. I don’t know who he is anymore.

Yes, it’s incredibly difficult, but necessary. If they are not themselves narcissists, it can be done, or at least started. Look at Dr. Hassan. The Moonies are an authoritarian cult that he managed to leave with help and went on to help us see the structure and methods and resist them ourselves. Hopefully, we can also use the knowledge we have to help others, even those who are convinced.

Week after week, this is such a superbly illuminating show. I've been using the phrase "the MAGA Malignancy" for several months now, so was struck by Dr, Hassan's reference to the Benedict Donald Cult as "cancerous." Exactly so. And I'm grateful to Anthony and everyone at MTN for battling it daily.

Social Psychology should be taught in schools from primary upwards. Ppl need to better understand how bad actors can lure them in.
Don't forget that in some ways it is - things like nursery rhymes - are just stories at a child's level telling about the dangers of certain types of persons - behaviors. That is one of the funny things about Trump IMO - he is the personification of most villains that we have been taught since little.

Thanks Stephen, I’m promoting this video and your book as much as possible. You helped me out of the cult I was raised in, then provided the materials online for me to help others out. I said the same thing the 1st time Trump lost, this isn’t going to end well. This time, he’s going to release the MAGA hounds of hell on the country. You always interview interesting people, I learn so much.
If someone has a victim mentality then the chances that person will search out people like them is high. These people will also watch and read only media outlets that support their views. These folks won't allow themselves to consider other points of view. They embrace their views and make it part of their identity.
I think most people who haven’t been around MN’s simply can’t believe how inhuman they are. It’s understandable as MN’s are entirely beyond the pale of rational speculation.

Great show! I have changed my approach in talking to Trump people. Calling them stupid makes them defensive. I ask them to convince ME to change sides. There’s no easy fix for this problem but we have to start. Prequel is a real eye opener. The banality of evil, indeed!

When liberals insult and mock MAGA supporters, we're just playing into the divide-and-conquer tactics of the people at the top, who are laughing at us all the way to the bank - and the golf course. Just like "them," liberals are influenced by algorithms, group think, etc. For example, "MAGAt" is no better than Trump calling immigrants "vermin," but that dehumanizing insult continues, and liberals don't have a problem with it or at least don't speak up, if they do. And as Dr. Hassan pointed out, surely there are people questioning MAGA - many have left the movement. They may be watching videos like these, reading comments, etc. We should welcome them and make it easier for them to admit and walk away from the mistake of embracing MAGA. We really need to unite to overcome the power of the 1%, who cause tremendous suffering so they can keep hoarding their wealth.

I'm well into this latest excellent show, watching in London at 8.10am on workers' Bank Holiday Monday (which Trump abhors...joke) and shot upstairs to my beaten-up Mac to suggest a possible future angle - Orwell. My thoughts as I watch and listen to the marvellous Stephen Hassan and your good self is that Animal Farm is probably better to feature than 1984 because I think it fits the situation perfectly. Who else is Donald Trump but Napoleon? He even looks like him! (I've got the Orwell songs if you need them for back-up!).

In the late 60s, my cousins & I met these great young hippies who invited us on their bus to go to their farm to share a big meal with other like-minded people. We got on, but at the last minute made eye contact with each other. Something felt weird. They seemed unnaturally happy. Over the top, happy. We got off the bus. Later learning, they were Moonies. Always felt we really dodged a bullet that day.

Listening to Dr Hassan brings home just how important it is for Dems to win super majorities in both houses. Otherwise, there will be no opportunity to have Congress change laws that would give us a fairer, more honest & less political SCOTUS. I think 3/4 of Congress is needed to make changes to the SC or to impeach political justices. I might be wrong on the number but I do know that we must vote blue all the way down the ballot. I fear that never trumpers will not vote for him but continue to vote for MAGAs to represent them in both houses of Congress.
Same. I am also worried about the Gen Z voters who are, I think, being manipulated by algorithms and Tik Toks (fueled by whom, exactly?) into extremism against Biden. Like them, I don't want the U.S. to provide unconditioned aid to Israel, I don't want Gazans to suffer like they are, and I am frustrated with U.S. foreign policy. But their talking points, "It's not about Trump versus Biden," "It doesn't matter who wins," "Don't threaten me with Trump!" etc. are not rational or informed opinions.
I wish Trump wasn't in a courtroom instead of out campaigning because he's got an excuse if he loses. Better to let him campaign and lose . Of course he still won't except it! But maybe less people will believe it.
His followers won't believe he lost whether or not he's in court instead of campaigning. There's no winning with them. Better to hold him accountable for at least some of his crimes.
Lock him up. He will find some reason to claim he was cheated in any case.
