Hey everyone hope you enjoyed the reaction!! See you next for Friends which will hopefully be out later tonight, but probably will be tomorrow with copyright!!
If you think you'd be interested in a happier, more light-hearted Ghibli film to help recover from this one *My Neighbor Totoro* & *Ponyo* are honorable mentions I feel
The author of this novel lived during the WW2 era in Japan and lost two sisters to malnutrition. He spent his whole life struggling with guilt... This movie presents a reality that hundreds of thousands families experienced at that time.
My grandfather was a child during WW2 and he had a little baby brother who also died, because they didn't have enough to eat. My grandfather had a stuffed doll he named after his brother and he kept it his whole life. He died in 2019. I hope he got to see his brother again. I wish there were no wars anymore.
I wish all citizens of the world could stand together & refuse to go to war. We are the ones who die for the whims of cowards hiding behind desks & bodyguards.
And it sucks the citizens were enduring the destruction when the Japanese army and the people underneath the prime minister are at fault for America attacking them
Whenever the characters are in red lighting, those are their spirits. The ending shot is them looking out over the modern city, showing how Japan recovered while remembering the innocent souls lost in the war. Beautiful film. Heartbreaking, but beautiful.
The ending of this movie makes me bawl my eyes out. I start crying as soon as she starts to show signs of starvation. I’ve only watched it a few times because of that. But it is a truly powerful film. Fun fact: it was originally shown as a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro.
Grave of the Fireflies is a thought-provoking film. When you think every family members of yours can always be trusted, think again. Find solace in someone whom you can put a hundred percent of your trust in.
What makes it even more heartbreaking is that this anime was based on a true story, The author and his little sister really did go through that nightmare as kids during World War II. The anime was adapted from a 1967 literary award winning story of the same name by the Japanese novelist Akiyuki Nosaka. Nosaka completely based the two main characters directly off of himself and his little sister who really did die of starvation exactly in the way depicted in the movie. Just as in the anime, the novelist deliberately kills off the character representing himself thus symbolizing that he wishes he had died with his little sister in World War II to atone for failing to save her because for many decades after the war, he always blamed himself for not being able to save her from starvation and suffered with the survivor’s guilt all his life. Both the original 1967 semi-autobiographical award-winning masterpiece Grave Of The Fireflies and the equally heart rending 1988 anime film adaptation from Studio Ghibli were dedicated in her honor, in the loving memory of his precious little sister. In the years since the war he had gradually picked up the pieces of his shattered life, continuing to be strong in honor of her memory, going on to make something of himself in ways he could never have imagined, not only just as an extremely successful award winning novelist but even soaring to new heights of newfound success as also a singer, a lyricist and eventually even becoming a highly respected member of The Japanese Parliament during the 1980s after winning election in 1983. Sadly his career would go on hiatus after suffering a massive stroke in 2003. Although deeply affected by the stroke, he would bounce back and continue on as a respected journalist, writing columns for a prominent Japanese newspaper. On December 9, 2015 he would finally pass away, dying at the ripe old age of 85, having achieved more in this life than most people could ever hope to do in a single lifetime and having done it all despite the early childhood trauma that he had been subjected to during The Second World War.
Ah, yes, one of the greatest films I will never watch again. I love getting emotional watching films, but I can't think of a single one that made me cry nearly as much as this one.
I always get so frustrated with the brother, unable to feed her sister because he couldn't swallow his pride. But the real person's guilt was what led him to write about it, so of course the story is told because he was aware of his faults. To be fair, he was just a kid himself, trying to do right like the father he had so much faith in.
One of the main lessons I took from this film is that regardless of your circumstance or mindset (because I know there are cultures or mindsets that are really big on appearing unwavering, unfailing, and not weak), you should always ask for help if needed, no matter how you think it makes you look. Both children perished, largely in part due to Seita's pride.
I absolutely agree. Some people blame their aunt, but it's war, she's harsh, but she's right. Seita should have swallowed his pride and stay, at least they could have survived, though I can't really blame him, he's just a boy and sadly he made wrong decision.
I'm not so sure that would have saved them both. The aunt was intentionally giving them both less food and worse quality food than her own husband and daughter and Satsuko was already showing signs of starvation while they were living with the aunt. The food rations also got smaller and smaller the worse the war got so even if they had stayed there would still have been less and less food to go around. Because of that I doubt Satsuko would have survived. In addition, in the live action version of this movie where we get to see more of the aunts perspective, we find out that she and her family is starving as well. That is the reason she gives Seita and Satsuko less food. She can't stand to feed them while her own child is starving, aka she is choosing to save her child over them. The aunt also ends up starving to death herself in an attempt to continue to keep her daughter feed making it even more unlikely that Seita and Satsuko would have survived, even if they had stayed.
I have a good story about this one - I was watching this movie in history class during my junior year of high school, and when it got to the point when Setsuko died, I was crying so hard. Two girls next to me asked if I was crying, and handed me a box of tissues.
"Grave of the Fireflies" is one of my all time favorite Studio Ghibli films! Especially because it's one of the few anime movies that takes place in Japan during war times, There aren't too many anime movies about Japan during WW2. And only one's I know of are "Grave of the Fireflies," "Barefoot Gen" and "In This Corner of the World" two of which highly involve the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
This movie destroys me everytime I watch it. The scene where the music starts playing as her brother tries to cheer her up, after the mother got injured always brings me to tears. And you seemed to missed it but the scene where they put the bandaged body with all the maggots to the ground, that was their mother. And from the beginning the movie starts with him saying "That was the day I died". So Myazaki wanted to let the people know, there will be no happy ending. And because war is horrible, it makes no difference between man or child. That was the sad truth of this movie. Thanks for your great reaction. I was literally in tears.
This isn’t the easiest movie to watch let alone an anime. But great reaction, I totally cried watching it once again. This is a true story about a brother and his younger sister trying to survive Second World War in Japan. Saito’s (not sure if I spelled her name correctly) death kills me every time. This movie isn’t for the faint hearted. Great reaction! Can’t wait to see what movie you’ll do next!
"Are they trying to kill the whole town?" - Yes, that was the idea. The intentional killing of enough civilians, not "collateral damage" or targeting military infrastructure, but the intentional killing of civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure to inflict as much pain and suffering on survivors, so that they would surrender.
The whole idea of anime newbies told they “have” to watch Fireflies literally dates back to the very birth of US anime in the early 90’s, when Fireflies was not only the only Studio Ghibli film that had yet made it to VHS, it was one of the few (clean) classic features you could watch on subtitled VHS, period. If you hear a fan nagging you to watch Akira, Ghost in the Shell or Fireflies, he’s probably passing down a tradition another fan nagged him when he was a newbie in the 00’s, and so on, as great-great-grand-fan. 😄
So mad noone warned you about this film, its such a devastating film especially for people who are very kind/empathetic and attach to characters quickly 😢 some will say thats the point, to be shocked and sad, but when i watched this for the first time i was broken ☹️
Once upon a time I was living with my aunt who loved that I had all of these foreign cartoons that she'd never seen, so I told her to just go nuts and watch whatever she wanted from my collection. I have a pretty huge collection of DVDs and always loved movies, so I had tons, and she would just watch a ton of them and we'd talk about the movie(s) she'd watched when I got home from work or whatever that day. I came home from work one night and she had just started watching this one and I was like "Uh... this one is sad... like REALLY REALLY sad... you sure you can deal with it?" and she was all "Oh, yeah, I love Bambi and this can't be much worse than that one!" So I was like "... OK......" We watched it together and it got to the "No Place Like Home" sequence and she just fucking lost it and was fumbling with the remote and I had to get up and stop the VCR cause she was begging for it to stop. Like, full-on can't talk or breathe because she's sobbing and like "Can't... make it stop... STOP IT STOP STOP!!!" I felt for her, but I couldn't help but laugh after I shut it off like "It's worse than Bambi, right?" My cousin came home like two minutes after we stopped watching it and she was still bawling and he was like "WTF DID YOU DO TO MY MOM!?" He was so pissed. We were laughing about it the next day, but that was a rough night. I love this movie, tho. It's one of those that you can't watch often, but I've seen it many times and the bits that always get to me are the bit where he finds her in the field and the bit where he's about to close the basket before he cremates her. He just stops and looks at her for a few seconds. Gets me every time. I bought the "Grave Of The Fireflies Image Album" back in the day and it includes some extra music and what I think are off-cuts or something, but it's genuinely amazing. I used to let it sit on repeat when I was studying or programming. The official soundtrack has actual audio clips from the movie with dialogue and stuff, but the image album is just music, and it's pretty incredible. If you can get your hands on a digital copy for cheap or if you want to blow $50 on some vinyl, it's pretty fuckin worth it.
It’s sadder to know that the creator of this movie was actually talking about his experiences in the war himself as a kid who had to take care of his sister. Who unfortunately died of malnutrition during world war 2. Very sad. Based on true events great reaction.
ooph, you need to watch My Neighbor Totoro after this! They were actually released to play opposite each other, and as much as this one is heartbreaking, MNT is made to be just as heartwarming. Hope you're continuing to feel better!
Now you need to cheer yourself by watching its companion film (double feature) , My Neighbor Totor, or just any other of Miyazaki's fantasies, in order to pull yourself together. AS long as you see at this time, spare some thought for those in Palestine going through the same ordeal.
Oh lord, this one is a tough watch. I'm sure others have already mentioned that the writer of the film lived this story, but with TWO little sisters that died of starvation, and he admitted he did not do enough to prevent their deaths. A lot of survivor's guilt channeled into this story, and by writing the main character's death and their reunion in the afterlife, it feels like he found some absolution for what he felt he failed to do.
Wow Nick, so pleased you're covering this as I included it in my disturbing animation rabbit hole upload. Can't join you tonight (late here in the UK 🥴😅) but it's queued! ❤
Ooh. This is a rough one, Nick. Remembered watching this Studio Ghibli classic with colleagues at my college years ago. Sure made us think for ourselves over the tragedies surrounding the aftermath of World War II. A few of us cried too. I sure didn’t, but I felt chills like my stomach dropped.
Oh gosh, Nick, you have my sympathies. I watched this movie once of my own free will, and swore I’d never watch it again, but eventually did again because I a took a college course that required it.
It's so heartbreaking that you did notrealize what the beginning meant, becase it means you hold out hope for so long. The entire movie is practically viewed in a flashback by their ghosts, so from the start, there is only one way this story ends.
Ok now, this has been on my "to-watch" list for a long while but it does not look like I am going to get easy access to the whole movie anytime soon (I usually like to watch the movie myself before seeing a reaction). SO, despite the fact I USUALLY need the context of the entire movie to fully respond to tearjerker moments... your "Hachi- a Dog's Tale" reaction (and "Land Before Time", AND "My Girl" reactions) all made me cry my eyes out and those weren't "full movies", so... I am going for THIS one when I get the house to myself :P (You do a really nice job with including enough of the movie!). Edit: Now I know what people were talking about with regard to this movie... full on devastating...
I watched this with my little sister, and she had to walk away by the end because she was about to cry. She still hstes thinking about how sad it is years later 😅 I also have a replica tin of the candies they were eating. I ate the candy, but kept the tin
This is a really sad movie having an innocent little girl died is destined to have people crying if they see this movie for the first time. Also Emily Neves who voiced Setsuko also voiced another sweet innocent little girl named Eri from the 4th season of the anime My Hero Academia.
Before I even start this vid, I know you are going to cry and I am going to cry. This movie when I first watched it was so hard for me to watch. It is the way war is though and this is only one family.
Hey, Nick so good to see you. Hope you're doing well and staying safe. I finally got a lot of movies in my collection. Strays Stephen King's The Boogeyman The Equalizer 3 The Meg 2: The Trench The Last Voyage Of The Demeter DC's Blue Beetle Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part 1 Stalag 17 IT! Terror From Beyond Space Black Sabbath
This is Both The Saddest Movie You Will EVER SEE. And Also one of the Best Movies You will EVER SEE. A True Masterpiece in Every Way. 😢.And Completely💔❤ Heartbreaking
There are sad films and then there are this which break your soul while you receive emotional gut punch. Masterful film. Its very hard to watch first time and next time even harder. One the best Ghibli films ever made.
It's a brilliant film about the effect of war on innocent children. However, having been living in a country at war for almost two years now, and knowing my feelings towards the invaders (and their children too), I can understand why this film is banned in some countries, after all the atrocities committed by imperial Japan during WW2.
Hugs. 💔😭 The poor unsuspecting theater goers who were going to see the double feature this was a part of. It ruins us, but it hit nerves still not healed from wartime for those audience members. I can't even imagine how much it hurt them.
I've avoided this movie for so long (despite having it on dvd) because i know it'll break my heart 😢 I'll need to watch it now though so i can watch the reaction afterwards On a lighter note i'd like to suggest dumplin as a movie reaction it's on netflix and really good
Best anti-war movie ever. What makes it so tragic was that this is based off true events The real"Seita" wrote a short story as a way to help cope with his feelings over the situation and change a few parts of the story. But most of it was true. And the ending of the story was EXACTLY how it happened in real life (including all of the dialogue.)
I doubt You'll See This But I still feel compelled to just say. Ive been desperate for distraction daily, lately trying to keep from the struggle with depression and I came Across Your channel. You Are As Unique As They Come. Your Authenticity, and Soul Is So Beautiful. Ill admit Ive cried Alot..lol But Maybe We need to sometimes. Thank You, For Helping Me❤
I have ever once managed to actually watch this film through. After that I did watch people like you reacting to it, but that is a layer removed. I could never stomach watching it again. It is beautiful in it's way, but it is and will always be a tragedy. It's the daily tragedy of the people caught in the middle of big powers clashing.

If you wanted to see the Japanese version, there's a version out there that's a Japanese dub with English subtitles that are translations of the Japanese. If you borrow from the library, or rent, the DVD, that's one way you could find it.
I remember watching Grave of the Fireflies a couple years ago and this movie brought me to tears and haunted me for days afterwards. Then I watched the movie again with my mom and she was also brought to tears (and I got emotional for a second time too). I actually remember reading the full story on a Japanese Studio Ghibli website years ago when I was little and decades later as an adult, I understand why people are so deeply moved by this film. I'm so glad you chose to react to Grave of the Fireflies! P.S. By the way Nick, I just wanna say how much I love your channel--you just seem like a really kind hearted man and your reactions are very tender hearted and genuine. Wish you the best, Nick! 💜
For those just watching and have not seen the film beforehand, spoilers below! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - “I hope nothing bad happens to them” Moments after watching our guy die and join his sisters spirit 🥺😭 This movie is so heartbreaking but truly a masterpiece
I can't wait to watch with you Nick! If you enjoyed this one, I'd recommend watching "In This Corner of the World." It is a sad but really good anime movie
A great movie: Absolutely A feel good movie: Definitely not. To quote Roger Ebert: "Grave of the Fireflies forces us to reconsider what can be done in animated movies." This movie is more heartbreaking than 90% of live movies. Btw, it is based on a true story.
If you ever want to watch a lighthearted wholesome show, then I recommend you to watch Bluey (just in general, not to react to it). Because even tho it's technically a kid's show, a LOT of adults (including myself) love it to. A movie I would want you to react to is a Julia Roberts movie called 'Stepmom'.
I remember watching this and not but i run out class and threw up and since no friends i i acted happy but when i noticed that i smile even if im hurt insider and
It is never said what happened to the father in the movie but we did obturated their navy sssoooo yeah he probably died. I forget if that is how the person who wrote this father died.
I've never seen this film myself, but I've heard plenty of other TH-camrs talk about it. I'm sure I'll really like it for its animation and story just like the other Studio Ghibli movies I've seen. Also, if you're interested in watching more anime, I would recommend Demon Slayer. It's a relatively new anime with INSANE visuals, fun characters, and an interesting world. I haven't watched all of it yet, but I've definitely liked what I've seen. I will tell you, though, be ready to watch three or four whole episodes before some baddies finally get taken out; the narrative is kinda frustrating like that sometimes 😅
Hey everyone hope you enjoyed the reaction!! See you next for Friends which will hopefully be out later tonight, but probably will be tomorrow with copyright!!
PLEASE REACT TO "THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS" OR "MALEFICENT 2"!!! 😊💖🔥
If you think you'd be interested in a happier, more light-hearted Ghibli film to help recover from this one

I wish all citizens of the world could stand together & refuse to go to war. We are the ones who die for the whims of cowards hiding behind desks & bodyguards.
Males exist, not gonna happen
Exactly, Those cowards are the one's who want to go to war so bad then they should do it. Not us.

In the Japanese version, they actually got a little girl to voice the sister.
"Are they trying to kill the whole town?" - Yes, that was the idea. If you can get your hands on a digital copy for cheap or if you want to blow $50 on some vinyl, it's pretty fuckin worth it.
You should watch The Tale of Princess Kaguya from the same director, it's such a beautiful animated movie !
I saw the Title and audibly went "Oh no...."
Amazing Movie. I never want to see it again 😭
They played them in reverse order once. That was a bad cinema day
Oh my God, this Ghibli is so heartbreaking and beautiful in same time!
Oh no poor Nick 💔😭
ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING 😭🤧
1 of the best drama films I’ve ever seen!
She still hstes thinking about how sad it is years later 😅
I also have a replica tin of the candies they were eating. I ate the candy, but kept the tin
You know how many times I recommend this movie...finally.
"Watching Grave Of The Fireflies (1988) FOR THE FIRST TIME!!"
Ok. Ok.
"By NickFlix"
Oh no. Oh no. Get the tissues ready.
I’ve only ever watched this film once and it’s movie most people only watch once. It’s absolutely crushing. I cried for 2 hours after this movie.
This is a movie alright lol. Hope you have recovered from this one by now Nick!
I'm so proud of you for making it through this movie. So amazing so impactful so sad
Damn Nick really is having a hard month. Old Yeller, Selena, Hachi and now Grave of fireflies.
14:07 She scoops only the soup for the siblings. A little after, she digs in the pot and scoops rice and soup for her daughter.
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!
One of the Saddest movies I have ever seen.
Wars and children ..it never changes 😢😭
This was not what I was expecting to see on my home page today. God... Poor Nick is going to be wrecked by this movie.
Hey, Nick so good to see you.
Hope you're doing well and staying safe.
I finally got a lot of movies in my collection.

The Meg 2: The Trench
The Last Voyage Of The Demeter
DC's Blue Beetle
Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part 1

You should watch Princess Mononoke next, it's a beautiful Studio Ghibli film and one of my favorites!!!
"In 1945 I died"
a minute later:
- "Is this a war or something?"
- "I hope nothing bad happens to them."
I read the title of the video and I immediately felt sorry for you lol
It's a brilliant film about the effect of war on innocent children. However, having been living in a country at war for almost two years now, and knowing my feelings towards the invaders (and their children too), I can understand why this film is banned in some countries, after all the atrocities committed by imperial Japan during WW2.
“My neighbour Toronto” 😂
Hugs. 💔😭 The poor unsuspecting theater goers who were going to see the double feature this was a part of. It ruins us, but it hit nerves still not healed from wartime for those audience members. I can't even imagine how much it hurt them.
My favorite movie...
My Neighbor Toronto
Lol
I’m sure you and JV’s Galactic Adventures will collaborate perfectly
I've avoided this movie for so long (despite having it on dvd) because i know it'll break my heart 😢 I'll need to watch it now though so i can watch the reaction afterwards
On a lighter note i'd like to suggest dumplin as a movie reaction it's on netflix and really good
Me and my mother love anime movies and Grave of the fire flies is the saddest movie of all time. Me and my mom cry alot of the death of Setsuko.
Oh no…… Nicky, how are you gonna survive through this one…..
Good luck, soldier 😂🫡
Next "Howls Moving Castle" please 😊
You have to watch the other ghibli movie (which is my favorite) “when Marnie was there”. I promise you will love it
My favorite too!
What better way than prepare for the boy and the heron with another studio ghbli classic. And yes, this movie is tragic
One of the greatest animated movies of all time.
Great reaction Nick and take care and stay safe 👍.
Thank You, For Helping Me❤
As sad as this truly is it’s very real and something people had went through and died from. Making this all the more heartbreaking.
This is such a fantastic movie. However once you watch it, you can’t help but just say to yourself, “Never again!”

This movie is based on a book, which is based on the author's experiece, where he wished he had been as kind to his sister and died with her...
This is a phenomenal film but for those who are easily moved, you need to be prepare for possible tears.
oh dear... i love this movie, watched it so many times.... but it's a ride and you really gotta be feeling okay to watch it
this truly might be the worst media comprehension I've ever seen in a reaction

“I hope nothing bad happens to them” Moments after watching our guy die and join his sisters spirit 🥺😭
This movie is so heartbreaking but truly a masterpiece
Very wonderful movie and awesome reaction Nick.
Man, I can't wait to get depressed
I can't wait to watch with you Nick! If you enjoyed this one, I'd recommend watching "In This Corner of the World." It is a sad but really good anime movie
had me bawling my eyes out.
A great movie: Absolutely
A feel good movie: Definitely not.
To quote Roger Ebert: "Grave of the Fireflies forces us to reconsider what can be done in animated movies."
This movie is more heartbreaking than 90% of live movies.
Btw, it is based on a true story.
Oh god, the English vocie acting on setsuko, hurts my ears
Oh geez, this movie will emotionally wreck you!
Glad you watched this but wish it was the sub! The sub actually has a child voice act setsuko and it feels a lot more emotional.
Everyone who ever sees this movie has the same reaction tears and A massive gut punch
