I'm a bit confused, you do realize that when you used the forgot your password button, it would have done the same thing that you're complaining the human did? The forgot my password button is pretty universal in functionality between many services. If your email was hacked as you say, then most services could be signed into with a forgot my password & an email reset code like you originally tried?
I have it on my phone because I don't keep a garage door opener in my car and don't feel like unlocking the door and going in to open the garage door to get my charge cable out. Someone can't open it from my phone because my phone is biometric locked down. The problem was they updated the app and expired the old version
I can't stand apps. Forever tracking, loading ads, updating and bloating. If I can do it in a web browser I do. (Yes, even on mobile) while running a very solid ad blocker and DNS blocker.
I’m all about local control from my Home Assistant server. Zigbee, Zwave and WiFi connected that has zero internet access. I use the Zooz Zwave plus relay on my garage door opener in conjunction with a reed switch. I used MyQ 8 years ago before I started building out my Home Assistant. Cool video sir.
lol. Home assistant is centralized hub that allows you to build automations with various technologies that normally wouldn’t communicate with one another. Sorry. It’s the IT Geek in me. I can’t stand the cloud based crap they sell at the big box stores like MyQ, and Tuya etc. As soon as one of those companies go under or get compromised, you wind up owning a brick.
Just highlights the importance of securing your email account. Most apps and software uses the forgotten password email me a link feature. Hence why email is always the weakest link.
That's why you go old tech! Have a book where you touch pen to paper, then you can have these written down instead of trusting a hackable phone to protect that info ...
That's the trouble with these so called 'smart locks and doors' etc. One bodged update or security breach, and your house is wide open to whoever. Most of these apps are very poorly designed, and their security policies are almost nonexistent.
MyQ is a dumpster fire. I have three deadbolt door locks on it as well and they are constantly dropping off. They are more concerned about advertisements and cross selling than security and functionality. Another corporate dumpster fire.
It really surprises me that the customer service rep. read the code out loud to you rather than just sending it to the email address. That said, even them acknowledging which email address has an account associated with it crosses a line. Social engineering isn’t taken as seriously as it should by some companies, especially when they outsource account administration to a 3rd party.
That sucks.... For security I have a pump shotgun and 00 buckshot. I do have a whole home security system from a local company installed and monitored but no app or cloud stuff to worry with.
an absolute monopoly on garage door openers will do that... a forced SMS code verification even would be nice. You know, TWO factor auth, lol ... You know I guess I better get on getting a physical lock put in on my door to my garage, huh?
I have that but then I have to go inside to open it. A number of years ago a neighbour had one a physical key on his garage door. It was just a contact switch that closed the contacts for the opener. Problem was crooks knew this, they popped the lock out and shorted the wires and the door opened.
This is why I will never use something like this. I'm old school for some things but I use tech for others. If it requires a login then no. Especially a garage door opener. I have two genie openers that use old school remotes and a keypad and that's it. It can be used with a smartphone but I choose not to.
Yeah the more I see these apps in use and hear these stories, I'll keep my old stuff. The slight extra convenience just isn't worth the headache/security risk/etc. Regarding the points apps - I just screenshot the UPC or QR code and store the images in a folder with a shortcut on my home screen. Sort of a crude google wallet that I control. Some of those apps (looking at you, PC optimum) would log out every time I went to use them! I use multiple email addresses as well, so it can be a pain to figure out which one I used sometimes. I usually have to search the inboxes to find emails from the company in question.
That doesn't work when you want to redeem points that are stored on the phone. The coffee shop app I use for example the points are stored on the phone. I can scan the old card to collect the points but not redeem them, and we get virtual gift cards at work for bonuses. Just cashed in a 100 e-card for example. Need the app to spend the balance.
@@probnotstech I don't hide spare keys. And it isn't a point of not having the key. I wanted to open the garage to get my charge cable out to plug my car in. I don't carry a garage door opener in t he car as I don't normally go in the garage other than to get something out when I am already outside.
Yeah this sort of thing is a continuing problem for me as well. You also get a lot of online services that require you to constantly change your password which exacerbates the problem of remembering which password was used for that account. People say "you should use a password manager" - yeah and what about when that password manager ceases to work or doesn't work on the particular device you are trying to access your account from? My solution is a simple text file I keep within my Dropbox. It doesn't contain any full email addresses or passwords, but rather "cues" to remind me which ones I used for each service (usually the first and last letters, sometimes a couple in the middle, with **** in between just so I can look at it and think "ah yup - that one".
The worst part about password managers is that they basically have a great big blinking arrow next to them that tells hackers "HackMe!" If I was a hacker and wanted to get credentials, this is what I'd concentrate on. (and yes, it has happened, even recently). And I'd probably score with much bigger results than just opening someone's garage door.
Did you call them from your landline, inside your house? They probably used your number to look up your address and authenticate automatically that way.
I called them from a voip line that is not registered to this address. He never asked for my name just email. The first 2 I gave him were not registered then i gave him the Hotmail throw away and it was listed so he reset it for me. Even if he had my address from the phone he didn't ask me to verify anything. I get people calling me at work wanting be to reset their account (they call me as opposed to
Yup got 2 lines. Line 1 home phone line 2 business line. You can see which one is used most as the business line is free long distance anywhere in north America.
the forgot password functionality does not ask you for more information either it just tries to send you a code. this would be more secure with a two step, this would send you another code on your phone after the email is verified
The problem was it only gave me 3 tries at guessing the email I used. I have multiple garbage accounts and on the 3rd try it locked and wouldn't accept the forgot password.

I bought what I thought was a 4k Panasonic camera last week and been scammed. I have got onto Visa about it now. And only buy them on Ebay from now on. even though they cost more.
It's best to keep track by keep records in a pocket pad. Yes, you'll have to secure it so nobody can see it. That's what I do for passwords. I use passwords nobody could memorize.
I'm flipping tired of apps updating nothing and claiming its security based but the release notes say "bug fixes" I'm absolutely sick of it, no details no nothing I'm done end of rant has always pissed me off
I love it when I am in the drive thru and the app has to update before I can scan it. I am at the window and the person there is telling me to move and come in, and I say no, I'm good if it takes 10 minutes to update and get logged in again , too bad so sad for everyone else. Yup when that happens I am that asshole that makes you late. I figure if a forced update is going to delay me, then I am going to delay everyone else in line. In fact when I go to open the app and it tells me I have to update, that is the time I am going to hit the drive thru, because standing in line they can just take the next order, but in the drive thru it holds everyone up. Perhaps this will get the managements attention and they will pressure their app developers to clean up their act. Oh, and by the time the food arrives it's cold, so another delay while they remake. That's how much I hate forced updates. Some will tell you that an update is available but at least they still work. Its the ones that are locked down that really piss me off.
@12voltvids 100% agree with you. Developers need to be disciplined for this nonesense but none of them ever are. It's like they dont think about these things what so ever and that angers me even more. More then not telling me what you updated
One problem is that Android mandated that all apps push out updates with a certain minimum cadence or they will be removed from Google Play as "abandoned." Many apps just work and need no updates normally.
