    Ashley has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
    At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
    Some of Ashley’s interests are TH-cam, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s TH-cam channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her TH-cam channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

    This year, I've decided to wait to germinate plants that need warm'ish soil temps. I'm distracting myself with germinate cool weather flowers/Broccoli. Do I still itch everytime I see my hot pepper, bell pepper & large tomato seed collection.... YES! The struggle is real.

      Oh yes! It's definitely a struggle waiting for the warmer temps!

    I use a cheap year planner with calendar at a glance and room for notes. I like to number the weeks backwards from safe transplant date. The weather is unpredictable and lost almost all transplants one year from an unwarned frost. Temps were in the 90s F that year in May and all my husband said is gma always waited till Memorial Day to plant out 😡. Our last frost 5/15 and I planted out just prior to Memorial Day weekend. Don’t want that devastation again so I guess I need to wait till June 1st or be ready to cover.
    I don’t start tomatoes and peppers too soon as the heat in the house really makes them grow. I don’t have room for a forest and try to get them out to the greenhouse to slow them down-it works sometimes. I only heat the leanto greenhouse when it gets warmer in spring to keep night temps up and get the jungle removed from the house. I’ve found starting in March too soon (about 2nd week of April would be best) and will probably count back the weeks from transplant date (June 1st) plus a few days for germination and hardening off time. That just may be perfect. I prefer to not have flowering tomatoes and peppers before transplanting.
    For brassicas I will start in time to transplant out under low tunnel by April 15th as it worked perfect last year as I had time to cover and uncover when needed. I won’t start brussels that soon again because they matured too quick and I like to harvest them in fall. They were huge, but like to have a frost touch them.
    The grow room is already full with overwintering plants, mini tomatoes and greens-Ugh, and houseplants that a co. shipped to wrong address and said to keep them-Jeez thx as I’m not big on houseplants 😅.
    It’s always a guessing game for us in the north and low lying areas that get targeted by freak frosts. Z5a, WI

    I cannot find any youtube videos documenting nursery operations and seed starting their common crops that us farmers buy in bulk such as strawberries, onions, sweet potato starts, maybe celery and for the home gardener peppers and tomatoes. Does your nursery do this? Would you be open to sharing tricks of the trade? Small things like fertile soil mix, fish emulsion, misting/watering schedules, pricking out etc. would be really cool to learn at this large scale.

      Are you thinking like greenhouse produce growing or moreso greenhouse to retail?

    • @joeyslinger9160
      @joeyslinger9160 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @GardeningInCanada either. I didnt even know there was a difference between retail and commercial for farms. Typically for onions and strawberries farms are planting them outside

    Ashley! My family now has access to land. We have lots of pine or spruce trees but at home our soil is quite alkaline and with ammendments hasn't gotten much better. Should I start a big wood compost pile asap? Or should i burn it all and add it to the compost or soil?
    Am looking for super acidic compost for garden at home or acidic amendment. Compost and sulfur has done nothing- near calgary

    I’ve always used the days to maturity as a days from transplant, or of direct sown, I add about a week or two.
    I grow in the same general area as West Coast tests their seeds - there is no way I can put my tomatoes out based on my frost dates, the soil is just too cold still.
    I started mine WAY too early last year (late Feb) using an aerogarden for germination, and ended up putting out a few 3 foot tall plants with a wall o water in early May. They survived and bore good fruit, but I am NOT going through all that again!

    Lots of info. Good study guide. Tried growing cabbage, frost killed it off(it needed cold frame). I think I'll try again.
    Also, do you have a guide for making your own mycorrhizal fungi? I've heard it makes networks that help during droughts(r u guys also noticing more intense droughts+flooding?)I've tried roaming Google before, but I think finding out from ppl like you who have expertise+ actually showing the process is helpful for many of us🌲

    If you want to get a head start you can always warm the soil quicker by removing mulch and covering with clear plastic.

    Soil expert question: if I bake my soil, does it greatly impact the nutrients in the soil?. I did this last year and it obliterated fungus and gnat issues. But does it hurt the nutrition in the soil?

    Love this video! Thank you for sharing! I don't have enough room to put a greenhouse. Maybe at some point. What do you think about winter sowing? I see so many people using milk jugs, those big trays that have covers etc. I have never done winter sowing but a local plant group I am in some people winter sow. But I am used to waiting til my last frost date. Just wanted to get your opinion on winter sowing

      Try just one milk jug. If you like the results, do more next year. It works well for me. Several TH-cam vids on how it's done.

    Not directly related, but would filling the seed module trays with soil, placing them on a heat mat to get them up to temperature prior to adding seeds help in speeding up germination?

    I've babied plants for months only for them all to die when going outside. I've gotten frustrated and just thrown seeds outside in total "eff it" frustration. I keep watching hoping to do better, but howdy this is hard

    So. If I follow the seed packet instructions for the tomatoes, I am starting 5-6 weeks before my last frost date. Then I need to wait until the overnight low is reliably above 10 degrees centigrade, which is going to be later than my estimated last frost date. Am I right? I remember waiting Forever for the overnight low to stabilize above 10 C. 😮. Hopefully this year it will not mess around so badly. 🙏

    • @DragonflyenAmber
      @DragonflyenAmber 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The overnight temps are for planting out the seedlings. I usually start my tomatoes early March. I'm in Ontario in zone 6b/7 depending who you listen to. I'm usually planting them out in late May. Hope that helps.
