Start in the small cells and pot up 2x the volume each time. More labor in up potting, but each step is a chance to give some the "Spartan" treatment. They get wittled down fairly quickly.
I've learned to put my seed trays in Ziploc freezer bags and fill every window in my house. Just remember to use low nutrient seed starting soil, and blow in the bag to fill it like a baloon before putting in the window for more growing space. Once the seeds are getminated, i move outside in cold boxes. Almost anything will do as a cold box once started, even a clear storage container upside down with a rock on it.
my tip is taking some paper (usually i recycle the brown paper from inside ikea boxes) flattening it, spreading out wet soil and seeds on it, rolling it up and standing it up in a pot. then simulating a greenhouse with either popping a 5L jug with the bottom cut off on top or a transparent plastic bag/ziplock bag. when the seedlings are ready you can then unroll the paper and cut it or tear it inbetween the seedlings and plant it just like that. saves space for me personally because i dont need to repot my seedlings halfway through then.
Thats what I do, I set my lamps at a good height in a cheap greenhouse in my kitchen. I set my trays on boxes then I lower the trays by using thinner things , until they are down on the actual shelves by the end 😊
Today is seed starting day, I have vermicompost tea going in the kitchen, perlite, worm castings, peat, sand, mycorrhizal innoculant, recentky punctured 2" dixie cups, tray, and humidity dome. The seeds have stratified long enough in the fridge. It's so cool to see you recommend a fan. I'll check Goodwill before the seedlings emerge. I love your channel!
I used to use those metal racks, I'd keep the shelves in place suspended using small chains or cables without using the black plastic parts around the uprights so that I could just pull the chain and the shelf would ride up and down the uprights so I could change the height at will :)
Thanks for all the information. I always find a nugget to incorporate into my set-up. Come March, I use my shoe rack for seedlings. Everybody's shoes will be lying all over the place. Stay warm.
My seed starting set up is exactly how you explained. I have two Racks. One is three feet x 18 inches w x 6feet tall. The other rack is four feet x 18 inches x 6 feet tall. Each rack has four shelves that can hold plants. … the top shelf is where all my seed starting starts. Between both racks (combined) can hold seven 10 x 20 trays. As we move down to the lowered shelves, there is more room for the seed starts to grow. The bottom shelf will allow up potted seed starts to grow to about 2 to 2.5 feet. …. We also have 6 feet of floor space where we can have 4 feet that can be used for seed starts/plants to grow up to 5 feet tall. … That our setup for a small indoor growing area (6.5’ h x 6.5’ x w x 10’ L)
Thank you so much....tried a lot of variations except...yours..After 7 years at my new garden set-up (4b, Morin Heights, Qc)..from way too big to worst one last summer...i have reviewed my needs vs area..versus what did good and not..Pretty sure i have come up with best garden schedule for this year..at least i think..Guess what i will be trying this spring, yeap..your idea.....Thank you so much again and have a great season..
That hasn’t been our experience, starting late, that is. But, I’m going to checkout that video about starting seeds. Thanks, been enjoying your channel!
i turned our bar into my seed starting area. amazon for lights+ shelving units 👍🏼 i use trays or flats to raise the plants up closer to the lights and lower as needed. This will be year 5. I acquired my moms unit like the one you have. i agree not my favourite it works but when the lights are down low for the baby’s the light doesn’t reach the edges of the trays. i find my home made ones work way better and i have just added more and more every year. i no longer fit in the bar and have expanded to other random areas in our house. my husband loves it lol not so much but he loves the end results.
More brilliant information. Thank you. I have never trusted bottom watering. It comes from getting joy from watering/misting from the top. Call me old fashion and a lover of plants.
This past year I modified the green house so I could roll half the roof back for the day, I had 1 1/2 crops of tomatoes. The 1/2 was the second batch was half the size.
@@GardeningInCanada I have ordered 1000 Tokyo bunching onions in seeds. Can we say, what would you thinking. Ha ha. I love gardening. I do it inside and outside. I figured since I live in the woods I might be able to broadcast some as long as the birds don't eat them. And I'll have an endless supply. Just food for thought. As if I let them go just maybe they'll come back to me. Yes I will fill up every pot I got ,fill my garden full, the rest I guess they will be broadcast. Maybe it's just a way to get mother nature to bring back food for us.
I start tomatoes 10 weeks and bell peppers weeks before frost date and get Black Krim and bell peppers starting June 30 and that's 3 weeks to 5 weeks ahead of most of my neighbors 6a Mid Ohio. Mother nature doesn't do what after dark????????😅😊😂 Yes I agree about isolation fans as great. About the control of light I did learn hopefully my brain can get it right. I'm remembering my aluminum foil falling and magnet should hold it onto my light frame Thanks
What do you think about ceiling fans? I have ceiling fans in all my rooms. Would they work, or would there have to be some fussing done? I have many shelving units I can use, so thanks for the tips.
going vertical... i bought a tower washer dryer... just to make space. i have one costco metal shelves. i grow about 1000 seedlings in that space. but learned when to start tomatoes... not january😂😂
i've never needed fans to produce good seedlings. fan will probably mean even more diligence to soil hydration, especially if on heating matt already. use a 150 or 190 (not exact numbers) professional grade cell tray and good lights and regular weak synthetic fertilizer. i water on top using fine dramm nozzle; not misting. plant out seedlings young (10-20cm tall). how many more seedlings do you need than a celltray or two like that?
Hi. This doesn’t have anything to do with this latest offering (which is very helpful, thanks!) but I have a question I’ve asked garden experts in person and have had contradictory answers. When you’re making compost, and you’re gathering your greens and browns, the definition of what is considered a “green” varies. Dr. Elaine Ingham says that if you cut it when it’s green, it stays green no matter how long before you add it to your compost. Our local expert says “No, that nitrogen is getting gassed off (is that a thing?) and that when they’re brown colour, they are brown.” Could you clarify for us?
Errington/Girl, I've wondered about that too. Every summer, when I put freshly pulled weeds into the bin, they're green, but a day or two later, they're brown & brittle. But they were green when they entered, so count as green. If I left them in the weed basket for two days after pulling them & then put them in the bin, they'd count as brown. Same leaves, but they spent that that same time in a different place, so count as a different colour & source of a different element. There's science for you! Then I tell myself it doesn't matter at all, because my layers are going to stay layered only until I fork it all over. So what the heck.
Nah...in my zone 11b if I sow smth in the Mid April/May it will collide to different pests and diseases and won't have time to develop into good fruits...

“She’s no that kind of lady”. Oh Miss Ashley, quality off hand jokes like this is just one of the many reasons I come here 😂
Instead of lowering lights sometimes it’s easier to raise the plants by using boxes or books
Thats what I do, I set my lamps at a good height in a cheap greenhouse in my kitchen. I set my trays on boxes then I lower the trays by using thinner things , until they are down on the actual shelves by the end 😊
Me, too! I use 2x3s cut to a foot long and just stack them.
Exactly!
🤯 Why have ai never thought of this?!
you're working so hard for this channel Miss! very grateful. you're singlehandedly forcing a green thumb onto me.

Omg that’s genius!!!
@ well i’m not sure about genius but i’ll take it 😆
Nice tips, lots to think about. Possibly changing some things I do.
Go for it!
I like the tip to turn off the fan at night. I've been running mine 24/7, but it does oscillate at least.
More brilliant information. Thank you. I have never trusted bottom watering. It comes from getting joy from watering/misting from the top. Call me old fashion and a lover of plants.
I hit the like button before actually watching the segment because I know I am always going to like it😂
Hahaha aweee ❤️🥹
I hang the LEDs in my racks on cheap thin chain from Home Depot and use s hooks so I can easily adjust my lights up or down as needed.
Absolutely great ideas and a great video as always and also great timing. Thanks, you've been great!
Off topic, but your hair looks beautiful!

🥹 jeeze that is kind!
I do it all the time since I have never seen a bad video from Ashley then I finish watching to the end.
I do it just to remind myself that I have already watched it. Not exactly a like, sorry! But if I did not care, I would simply ignore :)
I do it routinely.
It’s just you bud, nope me too.
Just tuned into your channel. Damn, you're good! Thank you!!❤
Thanks so much! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Thank you.
I'm glad you found it helpful!

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the snail! That one is probably the most space saving method I’ve ever seen. And you’ve already made a video on it
Omg, I'm so happy I found your channel😁. Heard you on the autoflower podcast and love your content. Spring is near...Happy Gardening.
Thank you for mentioning that you have a group on Facebook. I have just sent in my request to join.

That actually could work. If you see that plants moving than it’s working!

Omg 1000 seedlings! You're a total rockstar! 💪
@GardeningInCanada i do cut flowers thats why ;-)

Have u ever covered the theory that soaking seeds in hydrogen peroxide helps them germinate faster.
💚💚
"She's not that kinda lady" I will remember that.
I'm going to try making seed snails 🐌 I have limited space. Have you or anyone else here tried this method?
My black cats attack all plants too.

Can you not speak in Vocal Fry pleeeease.
It seems altogether too soon to be talking about seed starting!
Not that kind of a lady?.....I came here for the botanical tips.
Seed starting?? What were you thinking about in Bi classes?
OMG, you talk a lot. 😮
Get to the point.
Thank you
