I have the exact issue with mine now and was in the process of pulling it apart. I will contact Gopro first though as I can not find the receipt ( can't even remember where I purchased it from sadly). I doubt they will be able to help with mine. May be out of warranty anyway.
It was the usb port that came completely off the board. It could not be soldered back on. GoPro replaced the entire camera, it only cost me the shipping. When I received the new camera it was defective, I am still waiting for the replacement to the replacement. It's been over a month without my camera.
The mini-USB port on my ZOOM H2n recorder (originally manufactured around the same time as the hero 3) fell off, too. Seemed barely to have been attached. A local guy soldered it back on for me...
wow this just happened to me! were you able to source the parts and fix it? i guess i should watch and try to do it myself as well. how much were t he parts from gopro?
Did it still power on without the port? Or did it only affect charging? I'm just wondering if this would affect it from turning on with a full battery.
was it the usb port or where it connects to that was damaged? what part did go pro send to you and what did it cost? did you just re solder it back together?
my hero 3 got water damage and only turns on..doesnt do anything else, would tearing it apart and putting it in rice dry it out better then just taking the battery out?
Can a torx t6 be used for taking out the screws as well?

Just a quick question: The serial number on the back of the motherboard is its own serial number? Or it's the serial number of the cam itself ? (And the motherboard haven't got no own serial number.) In that case it should match the serial number in the battery compartment. Am I right ?
I think I said do it carefully... sorry to hear about your luck. maybe try putting it back together, call gopro, tell them your screen doesn't and see if they will replace the camera. As a bonus, they ask you to send the camera only, not the battery, and they send you back a complete camera, with a battery, so free extra battery!
just so you know you may want to be very careful taking the face plate off i ripped the ribbon of the screen and destroyed my gopro. watch that the screen stays with the camera. thanks bud
My gopro no longer works. I tried all the reseting trick that I have found here on YT. Also replacing the sd card. Like everyone else here says fuck gopro. I am ready to take a hammer to my gopro hero 3. Of coarse I will be smart about it and remove the battery and sd card before I smash it. Or I could send you my old camera.
Go Pro - will swap out most broken cameras for a new one - you do not need a receipt just the serial number inside - their customer service / warranty department is excellent
Ryan B good luck, do research before you contact - see what reasons others have got replacements for..... lots of go pro forums out there - lots of info here goprouser.freeforums.org/
i just called them they ran me through bs process to determine what i already knew than they told me to update the camera when my computer doesnt even recognise its pluged in , than asked me to get proof of purchase before i can even send it back which i most likely wont find only understood basic english ,pretty sure it was an indian call centre
If you're in the UK and you bought it on a credit card then you'll be covered by the credit card companies insurance.... not sure if there's the same thing in other countries. I'd email their customer service at GoPro too as I found them to be very helpful - they sent me free stuff from the US to the UK - don't give up too soon.
I called and talk and called and talked. Turns out it was as expected..it's no longer under warranty and therefore not covered..BUT if I send it in to them they'll give me a whooping 20% off a new one..gee thanks GoPro.
This statement is wrong as there are different types of Heat sink/Thermal paste on the market. The better the paste the more likely it is to be electrically conductive.
gopro won't send me a replacement for the same thing. they offered me a whole whopping %20 off a whole new one - PROVIDED I send them the old one!!!!!! I have to send in a dead/broken $399 camera to save %20 on a whole new one!
they did the same thing to me. it ends that u spend 720 dollars for one gopro - ridiculous. Im in the process of trying to find a repair shop near me to fix it for me, not much luck tho.
Same with me. It is complete bull shit. They camera stopped working 1 month out of warranty and it was because the camera fucked up not because I did something to it. And they think I will be happy with 20% off a new one?! I told them to fuck off and hung up.

Heat sink paste is actually NOT conductive.
