As silly as the orbs might be i do find the sound they make unsettling and frankly i think this type of enemy is more interesting as a something so alien to humans that we can only perceive it as geometric symbols than most otherworldly designs we usually get. They are still kind of silly though.
THE scariest thing in Silent Hill 1 was the squeaking kids. Same reason I think David Lynch films are so unsettling. Fangs and blood? You've already thought of that. Something seeming normal in a bizarre context? Try and make sense of that.
I laughed so hard at Carnby kicking those miniscule rats for almost a minute straight, somehow only hitting the one behind him (making it do a funny backflip each time) and not getting bit by the one in front of him, then dying instantly when its attack finally connected. Good video game
Having only rented this for my 3DO back in the day, I'm glad SGF is experiencing the complete bafflement this game offers. I remember it being a lot creepier, but some of the weirdness is kind of unsettling, which holds up better than those reboots. I'm also sure this is one of those games that's frustrating to watch for people who know their way around it, however I'm having a great time watching a man kick a screeching rat for 40 seconds.
Personally I like the broken sabre for combat. If you do a side-swipe with it you attack so fast the enemy can't do anything and just ends up caught in hit-stun. It's the only way I got through the awful combat personally.
You should use the manly Art of Fisticuffs for Gentlemen, SGF! The kick is good at range, true, but you can get a nice one-two combo going back and forth as you thrash the ruffians! Also you can throw stuff you don't need any more, like that empty first aid kit. Make sure you give a mighty HARRUMPH as you do so.
Par for the course of that era. While oftentimes needlessly antagonistic, there was a FYTW sensibility to several games (people still bare the scars from Sierra). There are games with even invincibility cheats and cribbed guides I still couldn't solve.
AitD 1992 invented the survival horror genre, and for that it always has a dear place in my heart. That being said HOLY COW would I not want to play it nowadays. Let's just say RE did what AitD did about a trillion times better control wise.
what actually surprises me the most is that this game never got a faithful remake. they just would have added better graphics and tweaked the combat a bit, but that would be all. instead we got those crappy reboots. :/

You just have to be extra careful. * Second, you do not fight the zombies in the dining room. You were right about using the pot of soup on the dining room table. You just have to find the right spot and then stay out of the way from all the zombies as they scoot their seats up to the table & start eating. * Third, you need to use that technicolor Indian Cover on the portrait of the guy who throws the hatchets. That should get you started initially.
