- Will Bosnia-Herzegovina soon be at war again? Almost three decades after the end of the Bosnian war, the country is a new EU candidate. But the situation here is more fragile than ever. Who will prevail in multi-ethnic but divided Bosnia?
In December 2022, some three million Bosnians received hopeful news: after years of waiting, the small multi-ethnic Balkan state is finally an EU candidate. However, peace in the Western Balkans is more fragile than at any time since the end of the Bosnian War in 1995, which left 100,000 dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.
Might Putin be trying to open a second front in the divided country? Why is Bosnia so central to so many geopolitical desires - both in the West (EU, UK, USA) and in places like Russia, Serbia, China and Turkey? And why is the country still suffering from the complex legacy of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement?
Interviews with the main players then and now unravel the secessionist aspirations of the Bosnian Serbs, the influence of EU member Croatia on the country and Bosnia’s structures of corruption. Bosnia-Herzegovina is the land of three peoples: Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats. It’s a meeting point of the Muslim, Orthodox, Christian and Jewish worlds. And it’s a place that shows that while it is difficult to end a war, it’s even more difficult to make a lasting peace.

Geez, why would you say “make war in Germany” are you a Serb, Croat or a Bosnian? what do your people have against Germany? I used to work with a Bosnian guy and he told me “he will never trust a German” which is crazy because I was born in Poland and I don’t have any issues with Germans.

The title of this documentary seems more provocative than reflective of the current situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina. While it's important to remain critical of the geopolitical situation in the region, it is currently peaceful and visitors are warmly welcomed. It's unfortunate that the media often focus on potential threats, while the progress and stability in the region receive less attention. My kid (Serbia) is looking forward to the coming student exchange in Sarajevo, the other kids that went had a time of their life and we are happy to welcome young kids from Sarajevo here. I am a Filipino citizen, I was 15 years old when I watched and heard about the war in this beautiful country Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was gross and unimaginable.

Tell them to the Serbs. Alongside the Russians, they are the only culprits for all the wars in Europe, including WW1 and WW2, and they are still fighting or destabilising the whole region once again. The other problem in Bosnia and Herzegovina is that it is a clash of civilisations. The only way that country can continue long term is to reorganise that everyone in the country has full political and cultural rights. This isn't the case now and its causing problems in the country. All three main ethnic groups want very different things.

One of my best friends in high school was a bosnian refugee. He grew up in srebrenica, and his dad was killed in the massacre. His mom was one of the nicest women even after all she'd been through. She treated me like her own son.

I like when nobody ever wants to show from the start full picture, what those wonderful Muslim people of Srebrenica were doing in Serb villages around it especially on Orthodox Christmas 1992. Next documentary would probably be about genocide that SS units suffered in Eastern Europe during 1945.

@@ajdoshka Nobody ever talks about 3 side crimes, only one in every report. West stance cannot be neutral and objective since they also have to justify their involvement. Most of military incapable civilians were transferred with buses and alive even today, only men who could carry a weapon got death penalty for what they did before, were some innocent, probably, still that is not systematic extermination but retribution, you may think different but this is how it was. West also says there are many genders, I have seen only 2 so far, so not much credibility there.
It’s a bit disingenuous for DW to claim that Bosnia’s constitution isn’t democratic or provide individual rights when that’s the price Bosnia has to pay for having a unitary state. If Bosnian Muslims want a unitary state then they should let the Bosnian Serbs have their independence.
Every time the Bosnian Muslim majority pushes for a centralized state - which they would control - then that pushes the Bosnian Serbs to seek independence.

@@mrgreenclon That doesn't matter anymore. In WWII you were killing us as a Serbs, and now you claim that there are no Serbs in BiH? The truth is actually the opposite of what you claim, namely that history in our part of the Balkans from the 6th century onwards records only Serbs and Croats.

And during SFRJ Yugoslavia (you can check) there were no Bosniaks, as I recall. There were Serbs, Croats and Muslims. By the way, the Muslims got the right to declare themselves like that from the 70's. Before that they had to declare themselves either as Croat or Serb. If there were no Ottoman empire invasion you wouldn't have such a big Muslim community. The nationality Bosniak is (re)introduced in the 90's.
Very interesting - thank you DW. I was in the former Yugoslavia 1999-2002. There were marked differences when I returned in 2006 and 2012. All the states are beautiful with wonderful people.

I'm from the UK and have to agree with the majority of the comments before mine. There's been no real conflict for over 30 years, so how long does that have to last before your title question is redundant?? There are real wars going on, so let's not pointlessly speculate on where the next one will be. There are divisions and tensions between peoples in most countries and I don't see this as any different, so why no documentaries' about them??

I´m in tears, back in 1995 I was a translator for a tv news company and I saw all the footage and news coming from Bosnia Herzegovina; it was devastating and heart-breaking. Now, to see this hatred and incapability of solving their core issues almost 30 years later, is so sad. My prayers and thoughts will be with this country. I hope that peace enters their minds and hearts, and that they never forget the horrors they lived through during that horrendous war. I know that still many survivors are living with the consecuences of it. Please, spare these new generations of the horror of war.

Germany lost 80% of it's army on the Eastern Front, the Soviet Union eventually defeated the once unstoppable German Army.
In June 44 when the allies invaded Normandy, the Soviets were already at the doors of Poland, without the Soviets all of Europe would speak German, without the Americans all of Europe would speak Russian.

The Soviets did not liberate Eastern Europe; they annexed it. Just search for the "Katyn massacre" to understand what life under Soviet rule was like.
Furthermore, the Soviets were allied with Hitler before he betrayed them, and they likely would have lost to the Germans without the American Lend-Lease.

Yugoslavia was created in a saloon in London in 1916. When British promised Serbia new territories, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia. Bosnia wasnt made like this. Bosnia was around for a long time.

Politicians in this part of the world prefer war , it is a much easier task to conduct warfare than maintain peace in this war torn region despite the horrific nature of war had already took a heavy toll on Balkan.

In Canada nobody was forced to flee their homes and no massacres happened. The area that is Republika Srpska today had 40% Bosniak population before the war. Any attempt to break up the country will lead to war 100%

Historically the epicenter of so many significant conflicts. It would appear as if more are on the way and world is powerless to create a solution. Once again, religion plays a major role is fueling war.

Great timing. I just watched the award winning BBC doc “Death of Yugoslavia” the other night, 5hrs. And it’s unofficial sequel, “Fall of Milosevic,” about 3 hrs. And then some videos from the ITCY channel last night. And the Frontline video on “The Trial of Ratko Mladic.”
So this is a great timing to have a current video.

Germany is involved in Yugoslavia civil wars supporting separation of peoples. Germany attacked Serbs twice and as well third time 1991 to 1999 by helping Croatian and Bosnian Muslim to separation from Yugoslavia. Croatian and Bosnian Muslim were during WWII part of nazi ustash who killed more then 1 million mostly ( 90%) Serbs and Jews. Jasenovac one of biggest deaths camp's in Nazi Germany where Croatian ustsh killed more then 750 000 Serbs.
Germany back of from Serbs, and peoples from ex Yugoslavia. Germany bombarded frist time after WWII they attacked together with NATO ,Serbs and occupied 16% of Serbs Southern province called Kosovo and Metohija.
You are Slavic enemies for centuries killing Slavic people last 200 years.
I stopped to watch after a few minutes because everything what was said by jurnalist is opposite.

Germany has always been and always will be an enemy of Serbia. It is so obvious that they cannot get over losing two world wars. But this constant pandering to the Turks, Albanians, Bosniaks, and all Arab refugees will catch up to them eventually.

A video which can not be seen in Bosnia about Bosnia? That is not giving me a good vibe. Honestly I have better things to do then to watch this video but from the comments its clear that a lot of people from Bosnia are very unhappy about this video.
The term "ethnic" is a misnomer as group identity in BiH has been historically based on religion, with the father's (Serb/Muslim/Croat) identity historically passed to the children. The population there is not "ethnically" divided so much as religiously, politically, socially. In many BiH families, there can be all three religions, qualifying "ethnic" distinctions as completely inappropriate. It's really time to stop referring to "ethnic differences" within a largely homogenous ethnic population.
Bosnian, not Muslim
Religion has often contributed to ethnical differences though. Some bosnian muslims feel "bosniaks", some other don't. Austro-hungarian empire promoted bosniak identity, Ottomans distinguished people based on religion while Yugoslavia weakened this identity (bosniak identity was very low in 1980s for example). it's a complicated matter and historically bosniak identity has a strong correlation with bosnian nationalism (which became stronger after the war and ethnic cleansing)
They are different ethnicities deal with it. They have been segregated for the last 500 years only in 1945-1991 timeframe were they not segregated.

For a moment i had a very difficult time understanding that THIS PLACE is actually in Europe .. and that this situation is actually not the GZ-IS situation.
Situation is actually similar to those in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Syria etc. The only reason there is not an actual war - with weapons - is because all have drained their resources with war in the 90s. Still, Balkans have low or large scale wars every two generations so another conflict is not impossible. I guess soldiers will be retirees.
