Hey Tony, I was on your live show last Sunday where you pointed out that I need to get more rotation/turn going in the backswing, particularly with the hips/lower body. I forgot to ask… do you have some suggestions on how to work on that? Perhaps some drills or ways to get feedback so I that I know what I’m practicing is actually getting me to rotate better? So far, I’ve been trying to feel like my left shoulder goes down more to start the swing, allowing my right hip to rotate back and behind me… before I video myself to see how that looks, I thought I’d ask you about drills/feedback so I could also video myself doing that. Cheers, Jonathan
Sure, a good drill is putting a club and resting it on your right hip at address, if you turn your hips a lot more that club will fall down right away. Try to get the club to fall down as soon as possible in your backswing this will help you get the audible “fall” to let you know you have rotated enough.
A few places, players hit 20-40% of GIR when they miss the fairway, but 60-70% when they hit the fairways. Amateurs see a bigger percentage of greens hit based on quite a few stats out there. Read “every shot counts” by Mark Broadie. I’ve referenced the statistic multiple times over the years because it is quite a common misunderstanding amongst amateurs, the amount of control you gain from the fairway dramatically increases the odds than being further but in the rough (for amateur level golfers who have a hard time controlling the face through the longer rough and lose all spin rate)
I always appreciate your golf swing analysis its always helpful, but statistical analysis may need some assistance. I understand your narrative but let's dive a little deeper. In the same year Freddy was 12th in GIR percentage and 6th in scoring average. Now let's be honest Freddy DA% is probably only 4 percentage points from average and 8 points max from the number 1. So, to be fair to Freddy in a four-day tournament he's probably only 2-4 shots away from the fairway compared to the average. But more importantly he's probably 2 clubs closer to the green than the below average player. I understand your concern with distance but if we think in terms of SG your not going to gain any shots if you find 2 more fairways but give up 1-2 clubs into the green. Conversely if you're consistently hitting into penalty areas or getting yourself stuck then you need to get sorted ASAP.
Thanks for the feedback. Just keep in mind the point of the video which is showing how you cannot have the best of both worlds. In order to gain yardage you will sacrifice control. Most amateurs are seeking distance but in my opinion in doing so they invite inconsistency along with that search.
@@liongolfacademy Thats not true all pros are hitting it straight and long while most high handicappers are short and crooked. If you get your speed from intent, efficiency and the fundamentals that you teach you can have the best of both worlds I believe and I think pros are examples of this. But if you try and bypass the fundamentals and efficiency characteristics and all you use is intent then 100% agree.

7:13- Collin looks to be in so much more of a lower body athletic position right before contact.
For sure! Pure connection! Thanks for the comment !

Wife crocheted that for me! Have to represent! Thanks doc’
@ she’s quite talented. I have 2 daughters into crochet and I don’t have a beanie to show for it. They are slacking.
That does it… we are going to start a petition to get you a crocheted beanie

Where did you get the 50% GIR when hitting from the fairway?
