What LIVING BELOW THE POVERTY LINE really looks like

  • There was a time in my life when I didn’t have the option to be frugal-I had to be. Every dollar had to stretch, and every meal was carefully planned because there was no backup plan. Today, as I clean out and restock my fridge, I want to have an honest conversation about what it really means to live below the poverty line and how it’s different from choosing a simple, intentional life.
I see so many conversations online about low-income living, frugal living, and budgeting, and while those are great things, somewhere along the way, the lines got blurred. Living simply is a choice. Living in poverty is not. And as someone who has been there, I feel like we need to talk about it.
This video isn’t just about financial struggles-it’s about gratitude, contentment, and God’s provision. It’s about remembering where we’ve come from, being mindful of the way we talk about money, and cherishing the simple joys of homemaking, no matter our circumstances.
So let’s have this conversation together. Have you ever experienced a season of financial hardship? How has it shaped your view of home and contentment? Let me know in the comments-I’d love to hear your story. ❤️
✨ If you enjoyed this video, don’t forget to subscribe for more on homemaking, thrifting, and creating a cozy, intentional home.

We are living at the poverty line here in Canada for a family of 4, but i’m still very grateful for all we have been blessed with. We never go hungry, we have heat, nice clothing, a safe car and a roof over our heads. We work very hard, it’s hard sometimes to make ends meet, but God has provided for our every need. 🙏🏻 I am truly grateful. I remind myself every morning of the Lord’s prayer… “Give us this day our daily bread”.

I am so sorry that you are having to deal with that struggle, I know what it feels like and it is not easy. I will be praying that your circumstances get better in Jesus name! I am so thankful that God still provides when seasons are tough, he is such a good good Father. I love that piece from the Lord's prayer! I thrifted a platter from a thrift store once for around $0.50 and I love that it says that on it, it is a very important thing to remember!

Wow!!!!! This! You said everything so well, and it is exactly how I've felt! You nailed it. I loved it, and thank you for talking about this. It needs to be addressed. Too many people are showing living below the poverty line, and it doesn’t look anything like what I have experienced in my life. You have such a wonderful heart, and you did this in such a loving way. 🤍🤍🤍

@@AuthenticallyRaylynn amen!!! There are people here in California who have worked over 30 years in the same job and are forced to live in their cars because they are poor and cannot afford rent.
When I was a little baby, my mom and dad worked all day long. She had to leave me with a neighbor because she needed to help my dad. When my mom got home, she cooked and she washed all of my diapers by hand, because she couldn't afford the disposable diapers. They lived in a moldy small apartment.
There are so many examples of poverty, yet people who are truly poor cannot afford a vacation, cannot afford to order things on Amazon or buy organic foods.
I feel so sad when I see people on TH-cam who are not really like the struggling poor, using poverty as a title to gain views.
This video was done in a beautiful way to highlight the real problem with poverty.

Thank you!! I am so thankful that me and Tommy do not live in the struggle of poverty anymore and that God has brought us out of it! I know that so many struggle right now with not having enough income to make ends meet and I just wanted others to understand that it is a real thing and not just a video "trend" that we can follow. Thank you so much!!!

2:08 CST you're very wise for your age. I just turned 76 in January. I've lived alone since 1997. I love my independence. But I'm now living on social security. I didn't make good decisions when i was younger...lifestyle and financial. So my bad decisions are one reason im at poverty level. I try to tell young people to save for their senior years because they come quickly. What i have would be considered riches in a third world country. Thank you for sharing! God's blessings on you and yours. ❤

I have been looking forward to this video!!!!
I appreciate the wisdom you have shared, this idea of poverty has been thrown around without any care.
My husband and I spent over a year living in a motel with no money for food. We ate ramen noodles every single day, and I still remember the day we bought one apple to share and that was the most amazing taste we had in a long time.
When we had our apartment we didn't have any furniture, we slept on the floor and ate rice, potatoes and Mac and cheese for like a year.
I was very sick at that time, my husband would work all night and come home to do laundry and to cook for me.
I'm honestly saddened that so many people on TH-cam are not poor but use that title to reference their situation when they are not struggling with real poverty.
Very well done video, sweet Mikaila 🌷
    Love this thoughtful video 🥲

Thank you so much Carol! I agree that it has sometimes been un-tastefully done and I wanted to bring attention to the fact that "poverty" is not a trend that we can make videos about without really understanding what living that way is actually like.
I am so sorry you had to go through that struggle, I have never had to live in a motel before but I do know what it's like to live through sickness and my husband working all night to only come home and deal with all of the household responsibilities. I agree with how we have to be mindful that being "poor" is not something that should be used to gain views or to get attention, real-life people live without every single day and it makes my heart sad that their struggles could be used as a way to garner views or wealth.
Thank you so much Carol and I hope you have a blessed week! :)

Ohhhh Mikaila! This was such a beautiful done video. Incredibly eye opening! Although thankfully, my family has never “officially” lived below the poverty line, we have been through many financially challenging seasons that left us feeling inadequate and at times hopeless. But in those dark times I will never forget how God ALWAYS made a way. I can’t even count the times we would get a small check in the mail we weren’t expecting that allowed us to get groceries until pay day. He always provided. Thank you so much for making such a beautiful video on such an important topic. ❤

Mikaila, this is so tastefully, tenderly done. The fact you experienced living in poverty in the past makes you so kind in sharing this heartbreaking situation for many people. I have never lived in poverty but have definitely had periods where the job was lost and no longer knew how we would pay or bills or be able to do anything! But God provided, He was so generous! ❤❤❤

Well said my dear, we went through it for many years we were 500.00 in the hole every month because I had to stop working because of illness. Makayla God never let us down we were never without, he provided for everyone of our needs, we did without a lot but we had food, a place to live, never late on bills. He is truly my provider, we went through that season for 9yrs and no we didn't have family helping us nor did we get government help it was miracle after miracle, people blessings us with food or someone shaking my husband's hand and giving him money, checks coming out of nowhere. We live in Arizona and had a car with no air-conditioning but we were thankful to have a care. We will be married 41 yrs this June and I tell you Jesus has always been there for us. Thank you Lord we are over that season but we don't forget or take for granted what we have. We not only thank God for this season we thank him for what we call the valley and all we learned. God bless you dear one.

Good idea for a video. We must all count the small and the big blessings. We must all help our community and offer help where we can, even if it's just a warm hug or a conversation with someone ( you don't know what people are going through. What that hug or that conversation meant to them) be kind and seek the Lord in all things. Be well. Have a blessed rest of your week.

She was saying she had been there at one time.. not now. I think the picture is just a thumbnail of her past. She's definitely not thrifting & remodeling with an empty fridge! Maybe you didn't quite understand what she said or read it wrong.🤷‍♀️ I know Makaila well enough to know she'd never spend her money on material things and go hungry..i don't think her conscious would let her even if she wanted to! She's not that type of person for sure!😊 Hope this kind of clears up what she's saying! She has been there in the past, many of us have! She's just going to share some of her past with us! God bless!😊

@tammyleviner3070 agreed! The video is to speak about trends and how sometimes people do these videos just because they are trending and don't really know what it's like to live below the poverty line. I think once everyone watches the video, they will understand. Mikaila is a very thoughtful person, and thank God she isn't in that place anymore. But she wants to share her thoughts on the whole trend for those who really do live below the poverty line to feel encouraged. 😊

I am so extremely grateful that God has pulled me and Tommy out of that situation and has provided for us time and time again and continues to do so!
