My main guitar is a Mustang, I love the short scale sound, and its great for smaller hands. They have their own sound and feel, I don't know how to describe it, but either you love it or hate it.
It is the slide switches that are a deal-breaker for me. As you point out, there is no way to smoothly change between the bridge and the neck pickup on stage. I don't think the Mustang was originally intended to be used for live performance. This issue was addressed later on with some variants having a 3-way toggle switching system.
I love the slide switches because they are low profile so I never accidentally bump them like I do with every toggle switch guitar I've played. And it was a pretty simple job to rewire them so the front switch selects the pickup and the back switch selects on, off or out of phase.
Mustangs are super versatile and easy to play. The clean sounds are REALLY clear because of the low output, but when you put high gain especially on the bridge, it bites harder than a tele bridge, sometimes sounding like a humbucker when overdriven. And yes, it’s super cool to look at
Mustang is one of the greatest guitars....I have one, I have isntalled a Hotrail in the bridge, the 24 scale is incredible fun to play, the tone of my guitar is huge, the distortion sound so big...much bigger than my strat and tele..... my model is a 2022 MIM....so I dont have complex electronics or tremolo.... its quite simple and perfect.... deeply in love of this guitar!
I have Mustang 65 MIJ Reissue model Olympic white(with Seymour Duncan humbucker in single coil size and blocked tail). Best guitar that i have played...ever! Squier Sonic Mustang and Squier CV 60s Mustang are on the way. So i can be extremly cool😅. Love that thing, best feeling and looks.
I comment not having watched the entire video yet, but to add to your point about changing strings: Even on Fender basses this is a problem, my jazz basses had big scratches behind the bridge from restringing.
I don't have any of these issues since I have a hot rails bridge and i locked trem trem then flipped the cigar tube so restring is a million times easier :) its not a traditional Mustang anymore but still plays and sounds incredible. I soent $250 althogether on my used squire cv 60 plus used hot rail.
@@bertsguitarchannel I only have a small sample size of my mown guitar, but I tune half step down (although I have. .25 degree shim in the neck) but I’ve not had any string slippage. Even without under wrapping the strings using the cigar tube I find there’s still a pretty noticeable break angle. If it’s good enough for Kur Cobain it’s good enough for me lol
Nice video, thank you. One thing though, I disagree about Strats being easier to set up though. Getting a Strat trem to float is ridiculously difficult. Overall you made many great points. Well though out video. I enjoyed it. Mustangs make me feel cool too!
VERY. Nicely done! And all those drawbacks are nothing compared to the tones (including, out-of-phase) you can get out of these special little guitars. My son has one with pickups that have a bar in the middle ... and that guitar sounds better than most other guitars!
Point Nr. 1o is the best. I only Play Mustang and i feel me really Cool. I sold my other Guitars, there is no better one than a Mustang for me.
glad to know I'm not the only one ☺️

Johnny winter played Fender Mustang for most of his life. He did play other guitars but in his early days the Mustang was his go to.
Thanks for the info!

Still my preferred fender guitars (65’ duo-sonic II) have smaller hands. I build these 3/4 shortscales for fun , kabayan
I'm also eyeing for a duo sonic. It's uncommon here in Pinas. Thanks for watching po. :)

is it the fixed bridge mustang?
@@bertsguitarchannelyes, its a hard tail bridge mexican mustang, very reliable...
I think you can use Stratocaster pickups to upgrade the mustang pickups. They’re pretty cool stock, quirky looking, and has that CLASSIC tone!
It's a Vibrato rather than a tremelo .Damned if I know the difference but its clearly stamped on it .

I also planned to have a Sonic but it's quite hard to find
Great video. I've been thinking about picking up one of the Squier Classic Vibes version.
Thanks. I highly recommend the mustang
Loving the Mustang. Thank you Bert
You're welcome!

Yeah, we really have to be careful when changing string :). Thanks for the comment

Does flipping the cigar won’t affect the string break angle which can cause the string to slip easily out of the bridge slots?

Your point is fair enough. Floating a Strat trem is not easy too. Thanks for dropping a comment!
New Player II version doesn't have slide switches on this guitar.
Very enjoyable video! The mustang is such a great guitar. Thank you for sharing
Glad you liked it!

omg so so brutal. Shocked
haha sorry its so shocking :)
Adding a neck shim to a les Paul...yea...so easy...
and impossible?
