Anyone miss Dark Woods Circus? Cos boy does it give creepy nostalgia...
I absolutely love this story and I do definitely suggest reading more into it because I knew this song for many years but only recently actually understood it due to the prequel "Wide knowledge of the late, madness".

Interesting depiction of Haku and Neru as the masterminds behind all this rather than fellow victims themselves!
Then again...it _is_ pretty unlikely that any form of surgery could make someone's legs _that_ long and allow them to remain functional...

It's even sadder when you realize this song is based off of a REAL LIFE STORY.
The master of the circus cut off children's limbs and affixed them to torsos and heads.
Thus making the two-headed child.
They replace the brain of KAITO with a dog brain, making him a flesh-eating monster.
As for the deformed diva, she was deformed because they replace some of her bones with animal bones.
Whenever the children misbehaved, they would throw acid in their face.
This is so f*cked up. I like the song, but the story...

Wow...this song was really sad. The story makes it so much worse...
While there _were_ circuses that mutilated, poured acid on and _raped_ people on stage (yes, rape was involved, apparently), I doubt that the deformities depicted in the song were real.
Especially Kaito's. In real life, you can't just take the brains of two different organisms, swap them, and expect the two organisms to act differently. For starters, I doubt these people were brain surgeons, seeing as they were criminals running an illegitimate traveling circus. If they did a transplant they'd probably end up killing _both_ patients entirely by accident. Second, even if you do remove both brains without killing the patients, do you honestly think a _dog's_ brain is going to be able to function inside a human body?
CJCroen1393 nice evaluation, of course these acts could not have possibly been real but it has been exaggerated from the true stories to prove how horrific and gruesome what some people did in late victorian era. The prequel “wide knowledge of the late madness” adds more clarity to how they came to be and implies maybe that it was a scientific experiment not a random one done in a circus.
Actually, "Wide Knowledge of the Late Madness" is not a prequel to this at all! (I was disappointed when I found out too)
The original PV for it had nothing to do with this song (and it was freeeeeaaaaaky), and in fact, its common English title turned out to be a mistranslation--its real title is "Madness: Because of Her Knowledge" (which makes more sense, I'll admit).

This is the original version:
The dark woods circus is a strange circus found in a forest outside of the city. It was built by the tall humanoid cat-like entity known as the ringmaster (or chairman). He lures kids to his circus where he captures them, deforms them, and forces them to perform there. Flowers will grow on their bodies if they try to escape or defy his orders, which can worsen their suffering. The first of his victims are vocaloids miku, Len, rin, kaito, haku, neru, and Toto. Miku became a deformed diva, with her legs replaced with that of a goat’s, Len and rin are fused together, kaito becomes a savage cannibal, haku and neru become tall performers, and toto becomes a clown who later hangs herself as she couldn’t handle her suffering. Len and rin are also tasked with passing out flyers to lure other kids to the circus. Meiko receives a flyer from them and is lured there, where she discovers its dark secret. The ringmaster captures her, but he doesn’t deform her. He instead just brainwashes her and tasks her with Len and rin’s job of passing out flyers.
This version has a few differences:
1. The story itself is to,d by a girl who I think is now a member of the DWC.
2. Meiko and Toto replaced by a little girl who is also the hanging clown.
3. The ringmaster isn’t seen clearly, but he’s still the mastermind of the DWC.
If you want my advice (I’m just saying this for fun): No matter how tempting it is, stay away from that circus!
I would take them all to my home and love and care for them!!!
If you can free them and turn them back to normal.
I loved watching this so much. I must have seen it over a dozen times by now! I think my favorite character has to be Kaito. Poor thing. I loved this a lot!
