The ‘rotting’ they refer to can be seen as both metaphorical and literal, but I believe the literal interpretation is the most accurate. Metaphorically, the rot represents their loss of innocence, and decaying hope. Literally, the rot is caused by acid being thrown onto them if they refuse to do what they are told, which is something that was common in actual freak-shows in the past. This is sad, especially considering when it comes to Rin and Len, as one twin has far more Rot than the other, which means one is favored , or takes more to protect the other. After this song, Miku snaps and kills herself and every other ‘freak’ in the show, as it seems to be their only means of escape from the hell of the circus. ( Blue Ice Princess). After killing herself and everyone else, she is thrown into hell and tortured relentlessly. Her pain is tripled due to her ‘sins’ (Red Swamp Bottom). Once she repents, she is not forgiven, but her physical pain is lessened, and she is assigned to be a grim reaper, which pains her more emotionally than physically, despite still having to live wrapped in barbed wire. Lol that is precisely the tragedy of those lines. These kids are clearly suffering in their severe abuse but can do nothing about it. They were likely kidnapped and forced into this so they can only go along with it or desperately attempt to convince themselves that it is fun, they are losing their sanity and trying to hold onto any semblance of it.
this goes for every kid in the circus, but mostly applies to rin. notice how she doesnt have those flowers on her face - the flowers actually represent the acid thrown on the children if they were bad or showed any negative emotion / didn’t listen. rin, always was a good girl, and never got acid thrown on her, because she never showed her true emotions for the circus and always pretended it was fun.

Here is my theory of this video : The character we see in the video are Rin and Len(as the two headed person), Miku(The Siren), Keito(The ‘madman’), and lastly Mekio(The girl in red). From what I understand, the deformed ‘monsters’ in the circus were not born that way. It is heavily implied later in this fanmade MV that the children were lured in somehow by the circus master. Before being transformed, they were all happy carefree children. Once deformed, they are not only put on Show, but also a abused (“Did we ask to be abused?”). They also hate their body’s that they have now(“Did we ask to breathe?”). They hate the lives they have now at the circus and want to die(Hinted by one of the children, most likely Miku says I want to die multiple times). However, you can see they constantly put on an act that everything is fine for unknown reason(maybe they think they’ll gain freedom?). One thing I have yet to touch upon is the Girl. The girl in red is constantly seen throughout the song. In my opinion, it’s very likely she is the next victim of the circus master, indicated by one of the first lines(something like staring strangely down on me. I’m just paraphrasing.). As she wanders through the circus, it seems like she takes glee from the monsters, though her face looks a little sad in one shot of her next to Miku. Update: After looking at the video again, it is very clear that the children want to escape. Indicated by the lines such as “Anyone help me escape from this place.” They only want badly to get away a but can’t. Also I found that they are always in pain in their bodies (the evidence was laid out). Their bodies only decay(“As our flesh decays”) which would hurt immensely. Thier eyes are also coming out of their sockets(The line right after “As our flesh decays”). They constant scream in agony but no body responds. Update #2 : I noticed that ‘fun’ for the park goers is torture to them. They are forced to smile (throwing out my mini theory from before.) as indicated from the first couple of lines “Smile so torn” (Phrasing since it takes a long time to go back and forth). Update #3 : I believe that the circus master was the one who did it to them.(I t would make sense in this song. Or at least an accomplice did it.). He pretends as if he is giving them a loving home, saying stuff like “The outcasts from god!” And pretends to give them a home. However, as we know from the song, he abuses them and profits off of it. Update #4 : I have some reason to believe that Mekio(the red girl) is the next victim. Towards the end of the song, she looks a bit remorseful about the ‘monsters’. Next, the show curtains close around her, implying that she was kidnapped. Lastly, at the very end, her eyes glow red, something that we see Rin and Len do in the beginning. This likely means she was transformed somehow(it’s not clear what she becomes). Also her face is full of flowers, meaning Decay in this song.(its a bit weird, but what am I to say ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ） If I missed anything, feel free to comment. This is actually really good! If the freaks refuse to do their act, or don't play nice then they would get punished. Acid was a common method in real freakshows, letting the flesh rot away.

I remember how when I was in JrHigh, I didn’t have a lot of friends really willing to put up with me, But there was this one girl who was, despite everything, best friends with me. She was a year older than me so of COURSE I idolized her. She could tell me she’d been to the moon and I’d probably believe her! (Actually the funny part is that we’re still friends and sometimes I’ll mention something she told me and she either doesn’t remember saying it or will tell me she was just trying to seem cool lol). Anyway she would always invite me to her house to stay the night and we would stay up for HOURS just watching dark Vocaloid videos and “dark” anime (Black Butler, Death Note, the “edgy” stuff). I remember us both distinctly thinking we were “weird” and “crazy” because of this stuff (especially this video and the one that was like a “prequel” to it? Can’t remember the name tho). Honestly it did kinda effect me mentally but more in a way of me thinking “haha I’m crazy, I can act however I want!”. Not really the definition of “crazy” but still it was a really freeing feeling considering I was an overweight girl in band and musical theater who liked anime too much and didn’t really realize she was Bi yet? And not a lot of people knew how to get along with me. The point I’m trying to get to is that watching this video and hearing the music sent me back to that feeling I had as a kid. The freeing feeling of acting how I wanted without people being around to judge me. Of course I don’t see this as being “crazy” but it’s a weird euphoric feeling I haven’t felt in years. So wow thanks Juby for unlocking that part of me, even for just the brief moment where I forgot how this song went but the second it started all those feelings and memories came crashing back. ❤️
Reminds me of my own weeaboo phase. I went to a very small middle school, and I could count the number of anime fans there on one hand (literally just me and two other people) When I was in 8th grade there were these two new 6th graders who were also very weeby who immediately sort of latched on to me (the other two anime fans were an asshole and someone who didn’t like talking to others she didnt know well much) and it was really cute. They would call me senpai sometimes and face me a little Miku pin once. I thought it was so cool at the time. I don’t think I ever even knew their real names though. Then I went to a massive high school and realized there’s a lot more anime fans than I thought. Like, the entire track team was filled with weebs who would either wear the survey corps cloak everywhere or Naruto run during practice.

When it comes to this song I've only ever listened to the original translated version due to how much I loved the art, the story, and the feelings that came from the song, I never listened to any covers or anything else(the closest thing I did was listen to the prequel) because I was scared that it would ruin the song or the story for me, I even had that same fear with this cover, but you've managed to pleasantly surprise me! These things did take place in history, obviously if you search Dark Woods Circus nothing will come up. You have to look at how in history, people would pay to see things like this. I think I can interpret this story: The dark woods circus is a strange circus found in a forest outside of the city. It was built by the tall humanoid cat-like entity known as the ringmaster (or chairman). He lures kids to his circus where he captures them, deforms them, and forces them to perform there. Flowers will grow on their bodies if they try to escape or defy his orders, which can worsen their suffering. The first of his victims are vocaloids miku, Len, rin, kaito, haku, Neru, and Toto. Miku became a deformed diva, with her legs replaced with that of a goat’s, Len, and rin are fused together, kaito becomes a savage cannibal, haku and neru became tall performers, and toto becomes a clown who later hangs herself as she couldn’t handle her suffering. That woman in the red dress may look like meiko, but trust me, she’s not. She is actually the ringmaster assuming a human form. Len and rin are also tasked with passing out flyers to lure other kids to the circus. Meiko receives a flyer from them and is lured there, where she discovers its dark secret. The ringmaster captures her, but he doesn’t deform her. He instead just brainwashes her and tasks her with Len and rin’s job of passing out flyers. If you want my advice (I’m just saying this for fun): No matter how tempting it is, stay away from that circus!

I just found this today and I can say it is very well done. The first cover I heard for this song was done by Froggie and that was a few years ago. Lol that is precisely the tragedy of those lines. These kids are clearly suffering in their severe abuse but can do nothing about it. They were likely kidnapped and forced into this so they can only go along with it or desperately attempt to convince themselves that it is fun, they are losing their sanity and trying to hold onto any semblance of it.
this goes for every kid in the circus, but mostly applies to rin. notice how she doesnt have those flowers on her face - the flowers actually represent the acid thrown on the children if they were bad or showed any negative emotion / didn’t listen. rin, always was a good girl, and never got acid thrown on her, because she never showed her true emotions for the circus and always pretended it was fun.

What a blast from the past. I haven’t heard this song since I was in middle school. Hearing it again at 21 is something else. You did a great job keeping that old eerily sad vibe
Here is my theory of this video :
The character we see in the video are Rin and Len(as the two headed person), Miku(The Siren), Keito(The ‘madman’), and lastly Mekio(The girl in red). From what I understand, the deformed ‘monsters’ in the circus were not born that way. It is heavily implied later in this fanmade MV that the children were lured in somehow by the circus master. Before being transformed, they were all happy carefree children. Once deformed, they are not only put on Show, but also a abused (“Did we ask to be abused?”). They also hate their body’s that they have now(“Did we ask to breathe?”). They hate the lives they have now at the circus and want to die(Hinted by one of the children, most likely Miku says I want to die multiple times). However, you can see they constantly put on an act that everything is fine for unknown reason(maybe they think they’ll gain freedom?).
One thing I have yet to touch upon is the Girl. The girl in red is constantly seen throughout the song. In my opinion, it’s very likely she is the next victim of the circus master, indicated by one of the first lines(something like staring strangely down on me. I’m just paraphrasing.). As she wanders through the circus, it seems like she takes glee from the monsters, though her face looks a little sad in one shot of her next to Miku.
Update: After looking at the video again, it is very clear that the children want to escape. Indicated by the lines such as “Anyone help me escape from this place.” They only want badly to get away a but can’t.
Also I found that they are always in pain in their bodies (the evidence was laid out). Their bodies only decay(“As our flesh decays”) which would hurt immensely. Thier eyes are also coming out of their sockets(The line right after “As our flesh decays”). They constant scream in agony but no body responds.
Update #2 : I noticed that ‘fun’ for the park goers is torture to them. They are forced to smile (throwing out my mini theory from before.) as indicated from the first couple of lines “Smile so torn” (Phrasing since it takes a long time to go back and forth).
Update #3 : I believe that the circus master was the one who did it to them.(I t would make sense in this song. Or at least an accomplice did it.). He pretends as if he is giving them a loving home, saying stuff like “The outcasts from god!” And pretends to give them a home. However, as we know from the song, he abuses them and profits off of it.
Update #4 : I have some reason to believe that Mekio(the red girl) is the next victim. Towards the end of the song, she looks a bit remorseful about the ‘monsters’. Next, the show curtains close around her, implying that she was kidnapped. Lastly, at the very end, her eyes glow red, something that we see Rin and Len do in the beginning. This likely means she was transformed somehow(it’s not clear what she becomes). Also her face is full of flowers, meaning Decay in this song.(its a bit weird, but what am I to say ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ）

From what I remember from looking into it years ago, these ppl or kids were kidnapped, sent to some kind of asylum or place for experiments. They made them look and be this way for the circus. They also throw acid on them (the rotting, or the flowery things on their face they speak about). I’m not sure what happens after or if they escape bc I found it difficult to find the complete story translated. It’s very interesting to look into if you ever get curious about it!
This is actually really good! If the freaks refuse to do their act, or don't play nice then they would get punished. Acid was a common method in real freakshows, letting the flesh rot away.

I remember how when I was in JrHigh, I didn’t have a lot of friends really willing to put up with me, But there was this one girl who was, despite everything, best friends with me. She was a year older than me so of COURSE I idolized her. She could tell me she’d been to the moon and I’d probably believe her! (Actually the funny part is that we’re still friends and sometimes I’ll mention something she told me and she either doesn’t remember saying it or will tell me she was just trying to seem cool lol).
Anyway she would always invite me to her house to stay the night and we would stay up for HOURS just watching dark Vocaloid videos and “dark” anime (Black Butler, Death Note, the “edgy” stuff). I remember us both distinctly thinking we were “weird” and “crazy” because of this stuff (especially this video and the one that was like a “prequel” to it? Can’t remember the name tho). Honestly it did kinda effect me mentally but more in a way of me thinking “haha I’m crazy, I can act however I want!”. Not really the definition of “crazy” but still it was a really freeing feeling considering I was an overweight girl in band and musical theater who liked anime too much and didn’t really realize she was Bi yet? And not a lot of people knew how to get along with me.
The point I’m trying to get to is that watching this video and hearing the music sent me back to that feeling I had as a kid. The freeing feeling of acting how I wanted without people being around to judge me. Of course I don’t see this as being “crazy” but it’s a weird euphoric feeling I haven’t felt in years.
So wow thanks Juby for unlocking that part of me, even for just the brief moment where I forgot how this song went but the second it started all those feelings and memories came crashing back. ❤️

Reminds me of my own weeaboo phase. I went to a very small middle school, and I could count the number of anime fans there on one hand (literally just me and two other people) When I was in 8th grade there were these two new 6th graders who were also very weeby who immediately sort of latched on to me (the other two anime fans were an asshole and someone who didn’t like talking to others she didnt know well much) and it was really cute. They would call me senpai sometimes and face me a little Miku pin once. I thought it was so cool at the time. I don’t think I ever even knew their real names though.
Then I went to a massive high school and realized there’s a lot more anime fans than I thought. Like, the entire track team was filled with weebs who would either wear the survey corps cloak everywhere or Naruto run during practice.

It looks like I'm one of the few people that's seeing this for the first time, and it gave me chills. The lyrics and melody mix together to create a horror that's multiplied by what is left unsaid, and left to your imagination.
i’ve wanted your english cover of this song for years ! it’s so coincidental that you decided to post it on this day , the day that i feel so broken and decayed , i never had a childhood or more appropriatly speaking , i was an adult during my childhood, when i was around 14 i used vocaloid and anime as an escape. but right now i’m in foster care and my foster parents are allowing me to be kid, despite me turning 18 in 9 days. this song really just helped me remember all the things i wanted to do as a kid . i used to feel like i was in this circus and instead of decaying flesh i would get bruised flesh for my failure and mistakes my mom was abusive and i knew i should’ve told someone but i was to scared of my mom and i was also too scared of seeing her being sent to jail. i’m sorry i rambled for so long, thanks for listening.

When it comes to this song I've only ever listened to the original translated version due to how much I loved the art, the story, and the feelings that came from the song, I never listened to any covers or anything else(the closest thing I did was listen to the prequel) because I was scared that it would ruin the song or the story for me, I even had that same fear with this cover, but you've managed to pleasantly surprise me! This even managed to give me chills down my spine which is something I haven't felt listening to this song since the very first time I heard it, so amazing job!

I was one of the kids that believed the rumors that this story was based on true events and now that I’m grown it makes sense I couldn’t find any facts on this omg. I feel so dumb lol.
These things did take place in history, obviously if you search Dark Woods Circus nothing will come up. You have to look at how in history, people would pay to see things like this. What would happen is people would have these things behind tents or cloth walls and you could pay to look through these holes and watch people be tortured, experimented on, beaten, burned, raped, etc. If you'd like I could look into it and provide some links for you.

I think I can interpret this story:
The dark woods circus is a strange circus found in a forest outside of the city. It was built by the tall humanoid cat-like entity known as the ringmaster (or chairman). He lures kids to his circus where he captures them, deforms them, and forces them to perform there. Flowers will grow on their bodies if they try to escape or defy his orders, which can worsen their suffering. The first of his victims are vocaloids miku, Len, rin, kaito, haku, Neru, and Toto. Miku became a deformed diva, with her legs replaced with that of a goat’s, Len, and rin are fused together, kaito becomes a savage cannibal, haku and neru became tall performers, and toto becomes a clown who later hangs herself as she couldn’t handle her suffering. That woman in the red dress may look like meiko, but trust me, she’s not. She is actually the ringmaster assuming a human form. Len and rin are also tasked with passing out flyers to lure other kids to the circus. Meiko receives a flyer from them and is lured there, where she discovers its dark secret. The ringmaster captures her, but he doesn’t deform her. He instead just brainwashes her and tasks her with Len and rin’s job of passing out flyers.
If you want my advice (I’m just saying this for fun): No matter how tempting it is, stay away from that circus!

I just found this today and I can say it is very well done. The first cover I heard for this song was done by Froggie and that was a few years ago. I really like both covers and I enjoy the original song. This will definitely be another cover of yours to get on my MP3 at some point. This brought back memories because one of the first Vocaloid songs I ever heard was Dark Woods Circus. Some of the first (Japanese) Vocaloid songs I heard were INSaNiTY , Dark Woods Circus , Alice Human Sacrifice and Trick And Treat.
