Watching this man tell stories after setting down with my step dad who retired as a police officer and had a severe alcohol problem give me some reprieve that he is in a better place. Some of the stories he told me I couldn’t fathom it but still didn’t agree with his drinking. He died from kidney and liver failure a month after retiring. Unfortunately law enforcement sees shit we could never live with and without help it can be fatal.
I’ve listen to a few of your podcasts in the last few days. I think what’s good about yours compared to everyone else is you get more of the person themselves. Other podcasts just focus on the prison/criminal aspect. You get the person as a whole and it’s more genuine.

It's a tough job and sry for your situation. Early on you talk about walking up and I'ding a guy, was he commiting a crime. Legally you cannot I'd and you guys don't really get that or don't care. So I'm a little mixed here on your situation. Good show appreciate you coming on.
My dad was in the Navy in WWII and he never talked about the war, when I would ask him about it he would only talk about the diversions like the time the ship commander spotted a small island that was basically just a big dirt hill! The commander said the first one to the top of that hill gets a case of beer, who wants to get in on it? Those that participated were taken on small boats to the island, my dad won the beer, he was so proud of that! Latter I talked to my grandmother and she told me a lot more, his ship was one of the first ships to pick up wounded Marines on Guadalcanal which explains his reaction when I told him I joined the Marine Corps, as soon as those words came out of my mouth he yelled at me "ARE YOU F-ING STUPID?" then he turned around and walked away so I couldn't see the tears in his eyes!
Oh God you're one of those but a female like me that actually spent 8 years in the Navy during wartime herself I'm pretty sure you would completely dismiss me and rattle off about your dad about how much you know about the Navy and everything else even though you never served a day in the military at all God I can't stand people like you
I feel sorry for ur pops cus the navy is no place to be for a man. @@Nate_BurreI cant speak for this person’s situation, but I do know that in FL you’re still able to apply and test for a RN license even if you have a “criminal background”. However, it does require a full disclosure statement and is reviewed. I’m sure there’s numerous factors such as what crime or crimes, amount of, etc. I have heard that even a felony doesn’t disqualify you. So if you’re able to apply for an RN license I’m sure you’re able to apply for EMT/firefighter

When he said “you have to worry about a body camera and a phone camera” sounded like something a bad cop would say. All the shit he got caught with sounds like a bad cop. Him saying he didn’t do anything wrong makes me feel like he’s a bad cop. Just saying

I was a military policeman, have 3 degrees in: associate of arts in judicial studies, bachelor in criminology and a master of science in criminal justice. I’ve worked in jails, worked as a state civil rights investigator, federal investigator and a federal mediator. I am now retired. I want to say this is one of the best interviews I’ve heard and what a great channel!
Why can't you comment on the video without giving a law enforcement resume? Or you could shorten it by saying you've made a living off the tax dollars of hard working people who really don't need you as much as you think.
Not usually a huge fan of police having seen the things they get away with. However, this story was absolutely relatable, having experienced corruption as a huge slap in the face thinking the facts and truth and history of an individual are going to make a difference. Then, finding out the hard way they chew you up and spit you and laugh behind your back, knowing what they did to you, and got away with it. It changes you.
I'm not usually a fan of police blah blah blah. I bet if you were walking through Compton California because your car broke down you would have your hand on your cell phone paranoid just waiting to call nine one one practically begging for a police escort.

It is really sad how people in positions of authority will turn on a good person when the situation is not convenient for them.....yet they will cover endlessly for people that "play ball". I see it all the time at my job, and it is sickening.
@@troyvincent8933 Security on the state level. I work with both local and state law enforcement, but I am not one of them. I work in a psych hospital, so it is normally when a patient is being transferred from a DoC site, or when someone tries to elope from the facility. Being ran by the state, we deal with the same red tape and things being swept under the rug. And of course, policy "revisions" that heavily favor the corrupt, often making it nearly impossible to gather evidence against them. I have personal experience with having to wear a target over doing the right thing.
@@troyvincent8933 My duties are sort of odd, as are the way job titles are done. I have the same base pay as an officer. I have similar responsibilities when it pertains to investigations etc. I can detain people etc. My "power" only applies while either on the grounds of my facility, or when I act to either pursue/protect a patient within the community. Because no guns are allowed on grounds (for obvious reasons) I am considered a guard, not an officer. That said, I qualify for immediate transfer to either corrections or enforcement if I chose to make the transfer. (I would still have to undergo any additional training required for law enforcement, but am not bound by age restriction etc. For corrections, I could start tomorrow) These things can differ from state to state, so I dont really know how common my situation is. When I give testimony at hearings/court I am always referred to as officer. I cannot honestly tell you why that is.
I had some similarities that resonated with me of the shit I encountered while on the job after listening to this interview. I was told once by a colleague that the reason we wear vests was the front was to protect you from the suspects and the back was to protect you from your co-workers. True statement. I was more at battle with the politics and ego of that career than anything else. Once you have a proverbial "target" on your back, and you are not one with the "group" you are done. Regardless how good you are or were at the job. The corrupt and inept always get promoted. It's about "cliques", nepotism, ego, etc... Jeff is right, once you are slandered, it follows you but it never defines you as an individual and in the grand scheme of things it does not matter what anyone thinks. Life goes on and lessons are learned and wisdom is gained.
So true! I have experienced the same thing in business and in unions. I will never stoop to their corrupt ways. The ineptitude is what infuriates me. The stupid kid of a boss moves forward while the ones that deserve promotion get sh$t on.
I would disagree. I feel that the "hero cop" stereotype requires some level of self aggrandizement that I'm not seeing here. I think it is more a situation where, due to numerous factors, he became desensitized to less lethal force. There is a bit of complaining about corruption within the police force but that is hardly surprising between police committing crimes and superiors who are over eager to dispel any suspicion of wrongdoing. Granted, this is the opinion of someone who does bot live in that country and is only basing this off of this video. I may be wrong.
I disagree, just watch a few videos of arrests and you will see excessive force.. sometimes they accidentally reach for a gun instead of taser and panic and shoot. The fact that he didn't have a taser and never once reached for his gun... it's pathetic, people think brute force hitting kicking is worse than shooting or taser. Stupid people think tasers are totally safe and harmless . Tasers kill people too and you'll see people tapering people for 2 minutes straight when they are already cuffed.. bodycam and taser would have helped him

Cop: "Well, ya know, I'd pull the cop aside later and tell him not to beat up my perp because it makes *me* look bad when I book him into the jail." Lo and behold, this is why cops have such a bad name. He never mentioned how this would affect the perp, or how this conduct was covered up and never talked about. Then he goes on to complain about community leaders going after cops all the time, trying to give them bad press. Come on dude. Are all cops bad? Obviously not. But the bad cops hardly ever get in trouble for misconduct, and the good cops never try to correct the bad behavior, which leads to an all around bad look for the entire profession. At least we have body cameras nowadays... They're the best thing that's ever happened to policing.

Ian, fantastic interview. You kept the interview moving, but also allowed your guest to talk. Alot of interviewers don't allow their guest to talk and constantly interrupt them. which can be frustrating as a listener

I was LE in Western MassaTwoSh!ts at the same time as Jeff, but not on the same department. False accusations of excessive force were common occurrences for any of us who actually did our jobs. And on top of that, Springfield, MA is a sh!thole. And Channel 22 News out of Springfield crucified Jeff every night. The whole situation was a political screwing. I've never met Jeff but from past experiences on the job I believe him. The whole area is radically liberal and extremely anti-police. It's so bad in that area that most cops I know who stayed even after the BS LE law that passed have countdowns on their phone to their retirement date. And not a single one recommends the job to anyone who asks.

I want to thank Jeff for his service during the war, I appreciate that and as far as being an officer, I can respect that the job is very difficult keeping criminals that wish to get away and flee unknown situations each and every time. Taking people to jail can be super dangerous, you just don't know what is going to happen and you definitely don't know if you going to make it home when fighting demonic spirits in the streets.

Dude’s a narcissist, crooked ex cop. I was relating to him at first for throwing “bad cops” under the bus. Then listening to his multiple incidents made me realize he’s just framing a picture to make him look innocent. It’s all excuses to justify himself lol. The host can sense it too by all his follow up questions. He keeps saying “I “THOUGHT” I didn’t do anything wrong”, he never says he didn’t do anything wrong. He says he was “EMBARRASSED” to go to court, he wasn’t mad as hell. He called his fellow officers “cowards” for “throwing him under the bus” and not testifying on his behalf. They know you like you know them!!!😂😂😂

I’m an active police officer, I am a Defensive Tactics Instructor and “Jiu Jitsu cop.” I see a lot of people saying this guy had 3 excessive force incidents, he’s a bad guy etc etc. idk all of the details besides what’s he said but I will say assuming he’s being honest, bodycameras would’ve saved this guys career. I had a similar incident to this guys final incident that resulted in him being charged. Suspect was actively grabbing and trying to take my gun, I threw 1 elbow strike, broke his orbital bone and knocked him out cold. His family tried to say I did that for no reason. If I didn’t have a bodycamera that proved my story I almost guarantee I would have been atleast fired if not charged. We deal with hundreds of calls and arrests every year, especially if you’re good at the job. There’s bad cops and they should be hung out to dry but 99% of us are just trying to do the right thing and take the trash off the street.
And if you weren't a cop, guaranteed, you would have a different opinion. Let's look at reality for five minutes. This guy is not being completely honest. Did you see his tattoos? Typically, they are prison gang tattoos. People who cover their eyes. Put forth a great of efforts in trying to keep their story straight.
Some of us were talking one day and we asked: Would youi rather be a policeman or fireman? I said I'd rather be a fireman, because you get to be a hero many times in your job as you save people in fires, cut people out of crashed cars, stop blazes in homes, and so on. People in the community praise the firefighters for the most part. A police officer is a hero, too, but they are treated like the bad guy by many and they have to work with very dangerous criminals. Their lives are in danger in a different way than the firefighter. One crazy unpredictable person with a gun could end to life of a police officer while doing his job. The firefighter has a different kind of danger and lots of training to handle it. Both are very hard jobs, but I think I'd rather face a fire than a crazy person with a gun. This was a very interesting video and I'm glad this guy has found a happy life now after all he went through.
Cops get the hate because they work hard at earning the hate. Cops were looking for some guy (who actually turned out to be innocent) so the cops grab me and they said I fit the description. I ask the cops what is the description the cop said a guy in this area. The cops did have an description of the suspect. He was 30 years older than me, 100 pounds lighter and a foot shorter. The cops knew I was innocent and they had the wrong guy they didn't care. Even when they got the actual suspect they kept me in handcuffs and kept talking crap to me. The suspect was innocent after all someone had made a false allegation. I have seen countless videos on youtube of cops doing the same thing to them that they did to me when they know the person is completely innocent. This cop in the interview ruined a lot of lives.
He only got rubber-stamped by the VA for PTSD after he knew he was going to lose his job. If a veteran knows he's on the verge of losing his job, just go to the VA and tell the doctor. He'll fabricate a phony reason to get you a disability wink, wink I've seen it a hundred times
@peterfichtner1 PTSD from the Gulf War? It was mostly an air war and he saw no combat. He saw 7 dead bodies. I've seen dozens and I don't claim to have PTSD. It's something they claim when they're looking for "hero sympathy"

I went through a police academy it’s not that easy. To This guy the PT test where easy as he was a Marine but yeh written test are hard and the military doesn’t even have any at all.

My uncle, may he RIP, was a WWII vet. He talked about general, funny stuff of military life but NEVER talked about battles, stuff that happens in battle, etc.
I used to have a different opinion of cops. However, no one knows what it’s like to do that job unless you’ve done it. Perspective is everything, another solid interview Ian!
Story-telling is fun, and Ian is good at asking questions and listening to answers. But the best interviewers actually do research and ask pointed questions. Ian skips over the part during the first incident when his female cop partner apparently stands by and watches her colleague get attacked by a crazed man with a weapon. Ian never asks why she just stood there, when both cops had authority to use deadly force. Also, Ian never shows the before and after photos of one of his victims, which are disturbing, to say the least. I get what people like Ian are trying to do -- i.e. humanize someone who has committed violent crimes, and I respect that. But this guy Ian appears to be disingenuous when addressing a very serious topic like cop violence. He wants to make friends while skipping over the icky parts.

I used to go through the Springfield, MA bus station when I went up to Vermont to visit my dad back around 2001. I've been to every Greyhound bus station in America in exactly 80 separate trips over 15 years. Springfield was the worst as far as gangs hanging out there. The place was pretty damn scary.
I personally don't have a good outlook on cops because of my personal experiences and even was set up by them back in 1998 when there're no body cam. But I felt bad for him with what he went through. So maybe think of it this way. For what he went through, it can makes him now to see things from another perspective and with that he can help and do more for the communities.
The fact that he was excited about getting hired and having gun was a red flag and the fact that he's calling a cop a good cop that was taking drugs from dealers is another red flag. That's not a good cop with a drug habit 🤦🏾♀️

My hubs uncle was a POW for 7 years. He’s still alive and well. From PA, now living in CA. He did very few interviews about Vietnam, but there are still many things he can’t and won’t talk about.
Unless you are there it is hard to judge. American cops in bad neighbourhoods are literally paranoid for their lives, with all the crazy criminals who are prepared to shoot at you. Maybe they do go overboard sometimes, but it must be hard to judge situations on the spare of the moment. I really don't believe 'all' the so called racist cop brutality is purely about race, I believe it is just cop brutality, by cops involved in stressful situations with bad judgement. There are some horrible criminals out there many of them are black, but when the black criminals get a good hiding, they are the only ones that get blown up and reported about in the newspapers, any other race just gets brushed under the carpet, especially the white race.
All cops on the force for over a year are corrupt. If you even just knowingly allow corruption to go on without doing nothing about it which you have no choice about, you're corrupt as well. Accessory after the fact. So to remain on the force you have to have dirt on you or no one will ever trust you. Don't ask me how I know this it doesn't matter. All cops subborn perjury to help the states case. No cops ever can go against other cops. They will be ostracized off the force. If you're truly honest and you want to protect and serve join the FD not the PD. Anyone who thinks police are credible and trustworthy are sadly mistaken and misinformed. I swear to you it's just the plain truth. Nobody is more full of shit than a cop. It's actually against the law to lie to police but even if hypothetically you had an honest cop, they are trained to lie to you and it's legal. Nobody is more full of shit than a cop. The majority of the police are narcissistic psychopaths. Power corrupts, that's a fact. It's human nature.
Awesome episode Ian! This one was very relatable, I have many family members that were military then went into the police force and it’s not an easy road. Also, my uncle was in desert storm as well and still deals with PTSD today. Great interview 💛

Watching this man tell stories after setting down with my step dad who retired as a police officer and had a severe alcohol problem give me some reprieve that he is in a better place. Some of the stories he told me I couldn’t fathom it but still didn’t agree with his drinking. He died from kidney and liver failure a month after retiring. Unfortunately law enforcement sees shit we could never live with and without help it can be fatal.
I’ve listen to a few of your podcasts in the last few days. I think what’s good about yours compared to everyone else is you get more of the person themselves. Other podcasts just focus on the prison/criminal aspect.
You get the person as a whole and it’s more genuine.

My dad was in the Navy in WWII and he never talked about the war, when I would ask him about it he would only talk about the diversions like the time the ship commander spotted a small island that was basically just a big dirt hill! The commander said the first one to the top of that hill gets a case of beer, who wants to get in on it? Those that participated were taken on small boats to the island, my dad won the beer, he was so proud of that! Latter I talked to my grandmother and she told me a lot more, his ship was one of the first ships to pick up wounded Marines on Guadalcanal which explains his reaction when I told him I joined the Marine Corps, as soon as those words came out of my mouth he yelled at me "ARE YOU F-ING STUPID?" then he turned around and walked away so I couldn't see the tears in his eyes!

@@Nate_BurreI cant speak for this person’s situation, but I do know that in FL you’re still able to apply and test for a RN license even if you have a “criminal background”. However, it does require a full disclosure statement and is reviewed. I’m sure there’s numerous factors such as what crime or crimes, amount of, etc. I have heard that even a felony doesn’t disqualify you. So if you’re able to apply for an RN license I’m sure you’re able to apply for EMT/firefighter

I was a military policeman, have 3 degrees in: associate of arts in judicial studies, bachelor in criminology and a master of science in criminal justice. I’ve worked in jails, worked as a state civil rights investigator, federal investigator and a federal mediator. I am now retired. I want to say this is one of the best interviews I’ve heard and what a great channel!

Not usually a huge fan of police having seen the things they get away with. However, this story was absolutely relatable, having experienced corruption as a huge slap in the face thinking the facts and truth and history of an individual are going to make a difference. Then, finding out the hard way they chew you up and spit you and laugh behind your back, knowing what they did to you, and got away with it. It changes you.

@@troyvincent8933 Security on the state level. I work with both local and state law enforcement, but I am not one of them.
I work in a psych hospital, so it is normally when a patient is being transferred from a DoC site, or when someone tries to elope from the facility.
Being ran by the state, we deal with the same red tape and things being swept under the rug. And of course, policy "revisions" that heavily favor the corrupt, often making it nearly impossible to gather evidence against them.
I have personal experience with having to wear a target over doing the right thing.

I have the same base pay as an officer. I have similar responsibilities when it pertains to investigations etc. I can detain people etc. My "power" only applies while either on the grounds of my facility, or when I act to either pursue/protect a patient within the community.
Because no guns are allowed on grounds (for obvious reasons) I am considered a guard, not an officer. That said, I qualify for immediate transfer to either corrections or enforcement if I chose to make the transfer. (I would still have to undergo any additional training required for law enforcement, but am not bound by age restriction etc. For corrections, I could start tomorrow)
These things can differ from state to state, so I dont really know how common my situation is.
When I give testimony at hearings/court I am always referred to as officer. I cannot honestly tell you why that is.

I had some similarities that resonated with me of the shit I encountered while on the job after listening to this interview. I was told once by a colleague that the reason we wear vests was the front was to protect you from the suspects and the back was to protect you from your co-workers. True statement. I was more at battle with the politics and ego of that career than anything else. Once you have a proverbial "target" on your back, and you are not one with the "group" you are done. Regardless how good you are or were at the job. The corrupt and inept always get promoted. It's about "cliques", nepotism, ego, etc... Jeff is right, once you are slandered, it follows you but it never defines you as an individual and in the grand scheme of things it does not matter what anyone thinks. Life goes on and lessons are learned and wisdom is gained.
So true! I have experienced the same thing in business and in unions. I will never stoop to their corrupt ways. The ineptitude is what infuriates me. The stupid kid of a boss moves forward while the ones that deserve promotion get sh$t on.

I would disagree. I feel that the "hero cop" stereotype requires some level of self aggrandizement that I'm not seeing here. I think it is more a situation where, due to numerous factors, he became desensitized to less lethal force. There is a bit of complaining about corruption within the police force but that is hardly surprising between police committing crimes and superiors who are over eager to dispel any suspicion of wrongdoing. Granted, this is the opinion of someone who does bot live in that country and is only basing this off of this video. I may be wrong.
I disagree, just watch a few videos of arrests and you will see excessive force.. sometimes they accidentally reach for a gun instead of taser and panic and shoot. SPRINGFIELD - Police yesterday acknowledged waiting two weeks before probing charges that a white patrolman had kicked a black suspect, but blamed the delay on the failure of witnesses to come forward with a videotape of the incident.
Deputy Chief Daniel Spellacy said the department had virtually no information on the alleged March 20 assault by Officer Jeffrey M. Asher until suspect Roy Parker's lawyer went public with a videotape 14 days later.
But the former Springfield man who filmed the incident insisted yesterday that he gave a detailed statement to police by telephone shortly after Parker's arrest. The witness, Donald Garner of Anchorage, Alaska, also disputed a police assertion that his telephone had been disconnected, making it impossible for investigators to contact him.
"Nobody called me," said Garner, who returned home after visiting Springfield for his grandmother's funeral. "I've been here, waiting."
The conflicting police and witness accounts came several days after Asher was suspended without pay and charged with assault and battery for kicking Parker as other officers held him down during an arrest on Quincy Street. Asher, 26, is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in Springfield District Court.
Police filed multiple charges against Parker, 47, including allegedly assaulting Asher with a sharp, glass-edged object. He is being held on $7,500 bail at the Hampden County Correctional Center at Stony Brook.
Police said the sharp-edged weapon allegedly brandished by Parker has been sent to the state Police Crime Lab in Sudbury for testing.
The videotaped kicking of a black suspect by a white patrolman enflamed tensions between police and the minority community, and led to a U.S. Justice Department review. The SPD's internal affairs unit is also investigating whether charges should be brought against at least four officers who helped Asher arrest Parker, who has a history of drug, firearms and assault charges.
Spellacy said he ordered an investigation into Parker's arrest shortly after defense lawyer Richard Rubin turned the videotape over the Hampden County District Attorney William Bennett on April 3.
Spellacy said the department was powerless to act sooner because neither Garner nor other witnesses had filed complaints. The department's first formal consideration of the matter came on April 3, one day before Rubin released the tape, when unconfirmed reports of the videotaped incident were discussed at top-level staff meeting, Spellacy said.
"We had nothing to go on before that," said Spellacy, adding that police administrators had heard "only rumors" about the tape.
Garner, however, said he gave a detailed statement to a police officer over the phone the night of March 20. The officer who took the statement, Garner said, assured him that it would be turned over to department supervisors.
Garner said he planned to bring the videotape to the station, but instead turned it over to Parker's family, who gave it to defense lawyer Rubin.
Police said they tried to contact Garner in Alaska, but found that his telephone had been disconnected - an assertion that Garner denies.
By yesterday, Garner said, nobody from the department or the District Attorney's office had contacted him.
"My phone was never disconnected. I've got the records to prove it," said Garner, a project manager for a company that cleans up oil spills.
A police official, however, said Garner never actually filed a formal complaint with the department. All citizens complaints must be filed in writing, not by telephone, the official said.
In a related matter, Spellacy said the department will determine whether Asher's fellow officers broke internal rules by failing to report that he kicked Parker. Spellacy stressed, however, that it was not clear whether any of the officers could have seen the attack, much less considered it an improper act.
The videotape shows at least one patrolman glancing at Asher while he kicks Parker, apparently in the head. The film appears to show Asher kicking the suspect another time, as well.
In his report, Asher admits kicking Parker several times in the arms, but only while trying to disarm him. The videotape appears to show blood on the right side of Asher's neck shortly after the arrest.
The local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is calling for Asher to be fired and for other officers at the scene who did not intervene to be disciplined.

I was LE in Western MassaTwoSh!ts at the same time as Jeff, but not on the same department. False accusations of excessive force were common occurrences for any of us who actually did our jobs. And on top of that, Springfield, MA is a sh!thole.
And Channel 22 News out of Springfield crucified Jeff every night. The whole situation was a political screwing. I've never met Jeff but from past experiences on the job I believe him. The whole area is radically liberal and extremely anti-police. It's so bad in that area that most cops I know who stayed even after the BS LE law that passed have countdowns on their phone to their retirement date. And not a single one recommends the job to anyone who asks.

I want to thank Jeff for his service during the war, I appreciate that and as far as being an officer, I can respect that the job is very difficult keeping criminals that wish to get away and flee unknown situations each and every time. Taking people to jail can be super dangerous, you just don't know what is going to happen and you definitely don't know if you going to make it home when fighting demonic spirits in the streets.

I had a similar situation years ago, and found this interview very interesting.
I’m an active police officer, I am a Defensive Tactics Instructor and “Jiu Jitsu cop.” I see a lot of people saying this guy had 3 excessive force incidents, he’s a bad guy etc etc. idk all of the details besides what’s he said but I will say assuming he’s being honest, bodycameras would’ve saved this guys career. I had a similar incident to this guys final incident that resulted in him being charged. Suspect was actively grabbing and trying to take my gun, I threw 1 elbow strike, broke his orbital bone and knocked him out cold. His family tried to say I did that for no reason. If I didn’t have a bodycamera that proved my story I almost guarantee I would have been atleast fired if not charged. We deal with hundreds of calls and arrests every year, especially if you’re good at the job. There’s bad cops and they should be hung out to dry but 99% of us are just trying to do the right thing and take the trash off the street.

Typically, they are prison gang tattoos. People who cover their eyes. Put forth a great of efforts in trying to keep their story straight.

Some of us were talking one day and we asked: Would youi rather be a policeman or fireman? I said I'd rather be a fireman, because you get to be a hero many times in your job as you save people in fires, cut people out of crashed cars, stop blazes in homes, and so on. People in the community praise the firefighters for the most part. A police officer is a hero, too, but they are treated like the bad guy by many and they have to work with very dangerous criminals. Their lives are in danger in a different way than the firefighter. One crazy unpredictable person with a gun could end to life of a police officer while doing his job. The firefighter has a different kind of danger and lots of training to handle it. Both are very hard jobs, but I think I'd rather face a fire than a crazy person with a gun. This was a very interesting video and I'm glad this guy has found a happy life now after all he went through.
Cops get the hate because they work hard at earning the hate. Cops were looking for some guy (who actually turned out to be innocent) so the cops grab me and they said I fit the description. I ask the cops what is the description the cop said a guy in this area. The cops did have an description of the suspect. He was 30 years older than me, 100 pounds lighter and a foot shorter. The cops knew I was innocent and they had the wrong guy they didn't care. Even when they got the actual suspect they kept me in handcuffs and kept talking crap to me. The suspect was innocent after all someone had made a false allegation. I have seen countless videos on youtube of cops doing the same thing to them that they did to me when they know the person is completely innocent. This cop in the interview ruined a lot of lives.
I feel for this guy even though I think he had problems with ptsd and probably was too rough on people. I think he’s a good guy at heart

He only got rubber-stamped by the VA for PTSD after he knew he was going to lose his job. If a veteran knows he's on the verge of losing his job, just go to the VA and tell the doctor. He'll fabricate a phony reason to get you a disability wink, wink I've seen it a hundred times

@peterfichtner1 PTSD from the Gulf War? It was mostly an air war and he saw no combat. He saw 7 dead bodies. I've seen dozens and I don't claim to have PTSD. It's something they claim when they're looking for "hero sympathy"

I used to have a different opinion of cops. However, no one knows what it’s like to do that job unless you’ve done it. Perspective is everything, another solid interview Ian!
Story-telling is fun, and Ian is good at asking questions and listening to answers. But the best interviewers actually do research and ask pointed questions. Ian skips over the part during the first incident when his female cop partner apparently stands by and watches her colleague get attacked by a crazed man with a weapon. Ian never asks why she just stood there, when both cops had authority to use deadly force. Also, Ian never shows the before and after photos of one of his victims, which are disturbing, to say the least. I get what people like Ian are trying to do -- i.e. humanize someone who has committed violent crimes, and I respect that. But this guy Ian appears to be disingenuous when addressing a very serious topic like cop violence. He wants to make friends while skipping over the icky parts.

I used to go through the Springfield, MA bus station when I went up to Vermont to visit my dad back around 2001. I've been to every Greyhound bus station in America in exactly 80 separate trips over 15 years. Springfield was the worst as far as gangs hanging out there. The place was pretty damn scary.
I personally don't have a good outlook on cops because of my personal experiences and even was set up by them back in 1998 when there're no body cam. But I felt bad for him with what he went through. So maybe think of it this way. For what he went through, it can makes him now to see things from another perspective and with that he can help and do more for the communities.

Unless you are there it is hard to judge. American cops in bad neighbourhoods are literally paranoid for their lives, with all the crazy criminals who are prepared to shoot at you. Maybe they do go overboard sometimes, but it must be hard to judge situations on the spare of the moment. I really don't believe 'all' the so called racist cop brutality is purely about race, I believe it is just cop brutality, by cops involved in stressful situations with bad judgement. There are some horrible criminals out there many of them are black, but when the black criminals get a good hiding, they are the only ones that get blown up and reported about in the newspapers, any other race just gets brushed under the carpet, especially the white race.
All cops on the force for over a year are corrupt. If you even just knowingly allow corruption to go on without doing nothing about it which you have no choice about, you're corrupt as well. Accessory after the fact. So to remain on the force you have to have dirt on you or no one will ever trust you. Don't ask me how I know this it doesn't matter. All cops subborn perjury to help the states case. No cops ever can go against other cops. They will be ostracized off the force. If you're truly honest and you want to protect and serve join the FD not the PD. Anyone who thinks police are credible and trustworthy are sadly mistaken and misinformed. I swear to you it's just the plain truth. Nobody is more full of shit than a cop. It's actually against the law to lie to police but even if hypothetically you had an honest cop, they are trained to lie to you and it's legal. Nobody is more full of shit than a cop. The majority of the police are narcissistic psychopaths. Power corrupts, that's a fact. It's human nature.
Awesome episode Ian! This one was very relatable, I have many family members that were military then went into the police force and it’s not an easy road. Also, my uncle was in desert storm as well and still deals with PTSD today. Great interview 💛
