Wood and Metal Coffee Table with Epoxy Inlay

I'm building a coffee table just from the materials I have on hand, which means barn boards and square tubing. I surfaced the rough 2x12s with the CNC router, ripped them down to size on the table saw, and ran them through the jointer. I used biscuit joints to add a little strength and help keep them lined up while they were glued. After the glue had dried, I surfaced the top down and used a 60 degree vbit to inlay a floral design Kelly drew on the ipad. I mixed the 2 part epoxy together with some black dye and poured it over the table top. Once it had dried, I surface the whole table top again, revealing the inlaid design underneath. To finish the top, I stained the wood with special cherry and applied 4 coats of polyurethane. Switching to the metal legs and base, I cut some tabs on the CNC plasma cutting table and welded them to the base frame. I used 1 1/2" square tubing for the legs, which I welded to the base and capped the bottoms of. I also added another support piece towards the bottom of the legs. To finish everything off, I set the metal legs on the wood table top and tightened down some screws to hold everything together.

I think it would be a good idea to elongate the holes in the steel where the screws mount the top. That should allow the wood to expand and contract with the seasons. Would hate for such a beautiful piece to develop a crack because that solid base restricted movement one way or another. Great project!

Great little project! Those exposed biscuits is what i like to refer to as 5-second problems, You'll notice them for the first 5-seconds, but later you'll forget they are there.
Only you will see the little things. No one else does. And eventually, you won't either! Very nice table! And you got to work with your spouse as well!

please enlarge the mounting holes for the top on the frame so the wood can move and won't crack.
use a washer under the screw.
and fill up the inset for the frame.
This also will make the top crack becouse the top has no where to move to.
Tip for making the top less shiney use some steel wool 000

Enlarging the holes is certainly a good idea, but the metal screws do have some give, so wood movement should not be constricted too badly.
@@RobertEchten The screws are countersunk heads in countersunk holes they have no where to go.
Dome head screws would be better but still not enough for a top like this.
@@3dmazter They can still bend a bit, depending on the quality of the screws. I agree that enlarging will assure you have no issue, but I'm not too worried that the table will cup like crazy just because the holes are not elongated.

Looks great! Looks like you need a flattening bit for the CNC.
Yeah a wide face flattening bit would cut hours out of projects like this.

Beautiful table and very nice floral design! If I may (and I hope that not a dozen others have said the same already) I would suggest turning the holes into the mounting brackets into quarter to half inch wide slots. (Only necessary on the 2 sides with the end grain.) This will allow for seasonal wood movement because the screws can move in the slots while still holding the tabletop down. But probably you already know about this and decided it wasn't necessary in the modern day and age with AC and insulated homes (less humidity fluctuation), so I'll shut up now :) once again, great work!
Well then, that's architectural digests loss as it looks amazing and is perfect. The design is wonderful and really adds to the barn wood.

With a solid wood top, the wood will expand and contract with seasonal moisture changes. Just make sure the top isn't rigidly constrained by the legs. If not, the top could split
Conan117117 is correct. There is no way to prevent wood movement, especially in a large solid top. It has to be allowed to float on the structure beneath it. Best way to accomplish that is to slot/elongate your screw holes on your metal tabs so they are perpendicular to the grain, and don't overtighten or over populate the fasteners. Just watch that you don't get the top "locked" in place when you're done, and it'll last a super long time! Keep up the amazing work, your videos are the best!

To prevent the black epoxy bleeding into the wood, coat it with clear epoxy first, then sand with a coarse grit to get proper bonding.
For de-drossing the plasma cut parts. Might I suggest a Magnetic Chuck table. Like they use on a surface grinder. Game changer for me.
Nice table--the inlay is lovely [that metal base must be earthquake-proof].
Very nice looking table and design. I love the simplicity, use of materials on hand and robustness. It concerns me there may be issues with wood movement. As moisture is absorbed into the timber the wood fibers swell and then as the timber dries again they shrink (it's exceptionally slow and it does a complete drying and expanding cycle over a year). Having all those tabs and the dado with no allowance for timber movement may cause the timber to split and or at the very least pop the screws. If you find this hard to believe, check out how they split marble by drilling a series of holes in line in the marble, tap timber stakes in and then add water. Thanks for the video. Cheers, David.

since caulk is cheap, couldn't you outline the inlay somewhat closely on both sides & use less epoxy?

@@maryblaylock6545 it's just that epoxy is so expensive compared to caulk. seems he could reduce it's usage a lot. regardless, it looks great.
I sure enjoy your projects. I do some furniture building but no welding …yet. You set a solid benchmark. If you wish to make a more perfect finish using poly or varnish (and you don’t have a long way to go) here’s a suggestion that works well for me: apply your protective base coats and sand them just enough to remove any bad runs or bubbles. Thin down your final few coats with thinner and sand them with finer grits of sandpaper. They will dry much quicker than the heavy, thick base coats and there will be fewer spots from dust so the sanding will go faster. If you desire a real nice tactile feel to the top, use some 0000 steel wool and then wax for the final top coat. I agree with the other comments about making your screw holes in the base at least 25% bigger than the screw shaft diameter when using solid wood to allow for expansion and contraction over the seasons. Not needed with plywood. Keep up your great projects. I appreciate your attention to detail on every aspect from the narration to the video quality. My only wish is for you to up your output.

if you had given the top a coat of varnish. to seal the inlay before putting the epoxy in, would that stopped the epoxy bleeding into surrounding wood?
Would the varnish affect the epoxy adhering to the surface?

Really enjoy seeing how you approach projects like these with the CNC as the main tool. Came out beautifully. Something to consider for future wood topped proejcts would be to make the metal mounting tabs for the top have oval holes to allow for wood movement. May get cracking if there's not enough slop in the mounting hole
I love the project and the aesthetic of it ! I am a bit afraid with the recess and tight tolerances that indeed, wood movement will be blocked which can lead to some cracking, or so I've heard, as I always try to take it into account, I don't know if it would truly cause any issue with that top. Guess it will depend on the environment it will live in, if it is constantly humid all year, it should be ok :) Let us know !
It won’t show itself till winter when you introduce heat and less moisture and there will be less moisture in the house. It’s a lesson in woodworking you have to learn and you remember for the next time.

that way you are sure of a good blend on the epoxy

If you want to 'de-gloss' the finish on the top a bit, give it a coat of beeswax and orange oil, then buff. That might create the lustre you want.

You could add some simple, short videos with updates on farm, barn, dog, tools, equipment... do not worry about quality too much! We know you can make great videos but we would like to see a bit more of them, even if they are going to be slightly lower quality!!

Use jointer first... then cut on the table saw using the jointed end against the fence for a perfect parallel cut.

You should get a riving knife for that table saw. That cut at 1:34 on an unsquared board has a high kick back risk without a riving knife.

first of all it looks great however if I can give you a tip make bigger holes in them steel tabs so the wood can move over time because its going to and like this it will break the wooden top. don't mean to be a nitpicker just have seen a lot of tops get destroyed like this
