Michael Fassbender is interesting, because I think he's a great actor, and he SHOULD be more recognized in the mainstream. He played a lot of roles in pretty bad or bland movies, but on the other hand, he played some really iconic roles. I particularly love the Frank (2014) movie, where he's not seen until like the last 10 minutes of the movie, yet his singing actually made me really emotional and cry and his role was a really good twist on the "he's good, because he's damaged" trope. His Magneto in the X men First class, was actually what sold the movie to me, despite all the goofyness.

Should be more recognized in the mainstream? What the fuck are you talking about? Fassbender was one of the most famous and acclaimed actors in the world in the early to mid 2010s. What a preposterously stupid thing to say.

I absolutely loved watching the Killer purely for the aesthetics and the vibes. I fully understand that’s not enough for most people, I’m not going to argue the narrative was amazing. But I found it fascinating watching Fincher elevate a pretty mediocre script into something so cinematic and stylish. The film had great cinematography and editing throughout and Fassbender is just captivating to watch.

Felt the same way about "The Killer" as Adum. The last line of the film made it even worse. Glad he did, since he gave a lot of my favorites this year 6/10's.
I'm not a big fan of biopics, but to me "Capote" is a special addition. Rather than trying to tell one man's entire life story in a couple hours, it devotes it's time to a significant event from that person's life, that manages to encapsulate everything Truman Capote represented as far as his personality and contributions to literature.

THE KILLER rules. Not sure what they on. Great, great film!
EDIT: So funny how Adum knocks The Killer for being derivative of DRIVE and AMEROCAN PSYCHO.
But like, both of those movies are extremely derivative of 1960s and 70s movies. Like blatantly so.
All movies are derivative. The Killer differentiated itself thru Fincher’s impeccable craft and the sly humor at the core of all of his movies.

I can see why Adam dislikes how ambiguous the killer’s true intentions were and his score is consistent with his opinions. I personally didn’t mind the ambiguity and the straight forward plot can even be a dig at the typical action movie revenge fantasy formula. I personally would give it a 6 for being above average, but these digs and subversions like Adam said have been done before with more compelling execution

The read of The Killer being Fincher at his most self-reflexive is really dumb. All of his films are in some way - in a way that applies to society in general, not just how he directs his films. Obsession, power-struggle, control or lack there of - all of these things have already persisted in his filmography.
People tend to use "self-reflexive" reads when they get nothing else from their viewing and instead they create this perfect symbolism in their head. Like sure, Fincher is aware of the similarities with the filmmaking process - just like the screenwriter, the DP and the crew are, judging by the interviews. Doesn't make it the centerpiece of the thematic background of the film. Saying "the director reflects on his own work here" is doing a disservice to what the film actually wants to say - because when people approach you with the argument that the film is empty and has nothing to say, saying it's about the director isn't that compelling an answer and it doesn't go anywhere.
There are things to the film that only really reveal themselves on the consecutive viewings and when discussing the film, digging in the details - because you inevitably focus on the plot and technicalities the first time. But leaving the first viewing thinking "it's empty and has nothing to say" with no intention of going back and rewatching parts or discussing the film, when the film clearly has things to say and nudges you throughout to grab onto these things - is just ignorant.
Still don't agree with Adam on the film, but at least I get his perspective more now. I highly suggest people who ended up disliking the film to give it another go while paying attention to the protagonist's mantra and how it relates to his targets, empathy and his psyche in general as well as the very intentional subtleties in Fasbender performance that lead on certain reads about the film.

Putting that much value on a film's musical score is just so foreign to me. I'm much more likely to be aware of a particularly good score rather than a bad one. If it's bad or mediocre, or just tonally off I tend to just not even really pay attention to it.
When I first saw Adum's score I figured he'd found some logical flaws in the movie or character; I definitely did not foresee the whole film score aspect bringing it down so much.

They don't have those forced slow gameplay moment's becuase they think the story they're displaying is masterful, they just chose the shittiest way to forces its mediocre narrative down your throat. If anything there just trying to reinforce the annoying venom fan service, which again, never felt pretentious, just bad. The gameplay is awesome though.

It is genuinely disturbing how many people watch a movie, and have all subtext just go completely over their heads.

Why do you find it disturbing that people identify with Bateman? The author himself, Bret Easton Ellis, relates to Bateman: “American Psycho is a very autobiographical novel, and it was really about my youthful despair. Patrick Bateman is me.”
The human experience is universal, so obviously readers are also going to relate to aspects of the character. Believe it or not, the world isn’t black and white.

I don't think you understand that most people do get the subtext, they just don't care. Why? Because it's fun. It's fun to indulge in your shadow-self. It's fun (and amusing) to relate to bad people. It's going to be especially common now because a lot of writers understand that villains/bad people are more interesting when you humanise them, give them understandable motivation and make them more complex. Even Homelander for example, very bad person, but people can relate to the frustration of being surrounded by people you think you're better than, and it plays into the "fuck it, I'll just do whatever I want" power fantasy. Helps that he's quite funny, intentionally or not.
Personally, I've yet to see a "le media literacy" take that isn't just someone having no theory-of-mind about how others, particularly younger, mischievous guys like to think. I think Adum has a good point about the inconsistency.
It's sometimes very vague about what it's trying to say, but in my opinion that's an important part of it.
It messes with your head, constantly threading the line. Satirical/genuine farcical/serious etc.
Maybe Fincher's saying something along the lines of.. How can you take yourself seriously in these times? Can you even take farce and satire seriously anymore in a world where everything's become so unsure.
Maybe he noticed in the process his old way of filmmaking wasn't of the times anymore, and it naturally became farcical and more like a deconstruction.

@@dajokahbaby1506 I will say he isn’t wrong on some aspects. Spider-Man 2 is more for Spider-Man fans rather than casuals. The dialogue is pretty standard Spider-Man stuff.
My main problem is his he overly hates the game based on the intro alone. He calls fans morons and judges the entire game on the intro, yet can’t handle people disliking him doing that.
It’s not helped by the fact he wanted to stream another game and bitched and moaned like a baby instead of just playing the game he wanted to at the start.
Also why does a AAA need to be entirely unique when it’s a Spider-Man game.

@@duskplains1235 It's not more for Spider-Man fans lol, it's 100% geared more towards a general, casual audience. Frankly, in what way is it more for the fans besides easter eggs? I mean it is for people who, yeah, do like Spider-Man, but not really *hardcore* comic fans like you're implying. It's for people who are fans of Spider-Man the IP, not really the comic book character, which funnily enough is probably where Adum falls into.
I guess it isn't fair that he based the entire game on just the intro, but to be honest the game doesn't get more indepth after that. Everything he complains about is still a problem later on, just to a slighlty lesser degree. Spider-Man PS4 was kinda like this, too. Where the first half was more focused on tutorials and "cinematic experiences" rather than actual gameplay, but once the game got into gear, there was a bit more freedom in terms of gameplay.

I thought the Killer was fairly mediocre almost juvenile at times regarding what is ‘cool’ or ‘badass’. When I heard awhile after I saw it that it was based on a a graphic novel that all made sense. I still thought it was mediocre. I’m glad Alex was able to enjoy it.

Adam's on point with the score conflicting with The Killer's scenes. It did not matched, and I think it could have saved the movie so much to have even a minimalist violin based score or something. Something memorable, not Social Network's leftovers. It could have added an atmosphere so striking.

  • @hookedonphoenix3112
    @hookedonphoenix3112 ปีที่แล้ว

David Fincher is a great director, but with a few exceptions, he always chooses really crappy material to adapt, resulting in well-put-together films with lousy stories and scripts. It’s almost like he’s dodging good projects because if they turn out bad, the blame will be on him. As a result, about half of his filmography is kind of a waste of time.
