We watched this film over and over in the late 70's. Like a thunderbolt, when that soldier said 'F it', all bets were off, we stood up and took notice, this was about life, peril and survival. Epic is where this movie starts.
Just watched it again after about ten years, though the first time I watched it was 40 years ago. It's better than I remembered it. Brilliant actors acting brilliantly. Powerfull movie
Zsigmond/Cimino was a match made in heaven. The wedding and hunting sequences in The Deer Hunter, the prologue and the rollerskating scene in Heaven's Gate. Such beautiful filmmaking.
So interesting what he says. He also made me laugh when he says "this patriotic bullshit...". You can tell bits of how he is with this gem of an interview.
Such an incredible TALENT …. Who knew how to make ART with so little. Your not going to find a DOP like this today… Maybe Roger Deakins but certainly NOT with his problem solving ability.
I’m literally amazed when people say this is too long. It flies by and leaves you bereft when it ends. The length, particularly the wedding, are what makes it such a special film. This is creating depth to the film and characters in it. There’s hardly any dialogue but that’s it that’s its beauty. Allowing the characters to breeeeeeeeaaaaathe…. The randomness of the making of it , this is why you don’t get films of this quality anymore. You have to take chances and Hollywood doesn’t like chances. Hence you get this generic bloated crap …. staring Leo caprio….. yawn
You folks might disagree with me but I felt this movie kinda felt like Deliverance after they blast their way outta that hostage situation and go down the river trying to save themselves. Definitely not a combat movie but it was great nevertheless!!!
I just watched this again after many years. The wedding scene is far too long. There are ways to establish character, story, and confinement without such an exhaustingly lengthy scene. This seems like a major misjudgment for what is otherwise a brilliantly executed film, but who am I to argue with Oscar... And what a cast.
Great interview with ONE of the GREATs about one of the GREATS!!
Flawless movie. They really don’t make them like that anymore.

Isn’t easy to understand everything he says but this is my favorite movie of all time. Something so real about it.
It's no coincidence that Zsigmond helmed Cimino's two best films.
heavens gate is not one of his best films.
@@sausage_and_peppershis best looking!
Köszönet! Thanks from Hungary!
Wedding scene was loaded with symbolism and foreshadowing….fantastic.
Great interview. Beautiful film.
My favorite movie !

it's DP not dop...
Why did you write the words 'talent' and 'not' in capital letters? 😂 It's always a good laugh when I see morons write like that 😂

Vietnam war vets ...friend pool narrows; smaller ...during, and after ...few friends understand 😢

It is too long. But what a film.
I think, because of the length, the contrast between the hopeful characters at the start compared to the conclusion is more profound.
It is to show the bond between friends, I loved it!
The wedding scene was way too long (yawn). Some producer quipped the wedding went on so long he felt guilty not bringing a gift.
His work is brilliant. In many other films too, like Close Encounters .
that movie, had one good scene.. that's it.
